This is a Sci Fi Masterpiece. Thank you Mr. Gibson for pioneering a Genre that has been such a huge part of the media that I've enjoyed throughout my life. This copy is staying with me, but if you don't want to wait for a lucky thrift find, you can pick up a copy on amazon and support the channel: amzn.to/3stu1g4

Great review. I first tried to listed to this on Audible and didn't make it. About two thirds of the way through I finally admitted to myself I had no idea at all what was going on. Audio books can be funny like that, especially for more complex books like this. I later grabbed the paperback and made it through with no issues. Very good book.

Oh I couldn’t imagine trying to listen to this as an audio book. Kudos to you for giving it another try, and I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

Oh, I’m so glad you liked this! I read this in 1988 or 89 for a science fiction literature class, and was absolutely blown away by it, but found out in class everyone else HATED it. Phrases like “I didn’t understand anything” and “it was impenetrable” were thrown around. Jump forward nearly 40 years where all the ideas from this book are everywhere now and I think it reads better for modern audiences.

I can see how it might have been too forward for audiences then, but I think with world travel as it is now and as you said more tech it does read exceptionally well today. You must of had a really great teacher to assign this in the 80s

I have a 12 year old so I've seen every episode of teen titans. there's one that's a cyberpunk episode where robin keeps saying jack in and they're all creeped out by it. Haven't read this in a long time, might be time for a reread.

LOL I don't remember that episode, but I watched the teen titans when it came out so it's been a decade +

I read it years ago and hated it initially, the prose was hard to get into, but a week later I was still thinking of the book and realized I actually enjoyed it. I had a similar experience with Vacuum Flowers by Michael Swanwick, another awesome cyberpunk!

My #1 book, Sci-Fi or any genre, I've read this quite a few times over the years, the last time being in the 90's. I also really liked the Johnny Mnemonic and Burning Chrome short stories set in the Sprawl.

I actually picked this book based off your recommendation. After Prison Planet I needed something that I knew would be good, and I know you’d never steer me wrong! Thank you 💕

I have not. I haven't had as much gaming free time as I have wanted this year, been using it to read instead ;)

It's been a few years since I read this, but I remember that scarcity of prose being something I admired. I always feel like you could read whole separate meanings into Gibson's prose on a second reading, there's so much embedded/explained later that doesn't make sense at first pass but ultimately would impart extra depth. I'm given to understand this is something that he cultivates through his manuscript review process!

That's cool to know. I am interested to read the other novels set in this world by him, because I enjoyed this one so much.

You may be able to find it at a second hand shop, or an online shop like abebooks or eBay. The copy I have in my possession is not for sale and was found thrifting.
