One of the things i missed the most was the scene with a kid whose daemon actually got separated from him and Lyra finds him in a nearby village, holding a piece of dried fish, whispering the daemon's name... that scene was just so powerful an emotional. But with the acting skills the movie showed us, maybe it's for the best they didn't get to ruin it.

@rosiespiller16406 жыл бұрын
There was a scene in the film, but they made the boy Billy Costa instead of someone called Tony, who was used as an example earlier on in the book of how the children were captured by Mrs. Coulter. And there was an emotional scene where Tony died, and Lyra was distraught by the knowledge that one of the gyptians gave the piece of fish to his dogs. She then wrote the boy's daemon's name on a coin and left it in his mouth, like she'd seen had happened to the dead scholars at Jordan College.

For all this movies faults, I thought Nicole Kidman was FANTASTICALLY creepy as Mrs Coulter.
@Iv13097 жыл бұрын
Lunacorva I know you posted this comment 2 years ago but I still have to comment. I saw this movie 10 years ago when it came to cinema. But I recently read the first book. Although some scenes have been turned around (Bolvangar-Svalbird) it kept pretty close to the story and I know worse movies (The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials for example changed the whole base plot from a second trial to an escape movie, that wasn't the story of the book at all). But what irritates me most about this movie actually is Nicole Kidman. She's a great actress and acted the role well but she just doesn't look like Mrs. Coulter at all who was described with black hair. They could at least have dyed Nicole's hair. Because in the way her appearance was described in the books this is not a Mrs Coulter.
@roderigodetriano7 жыл бұрын

1:36 That reminds me of the comparison between J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth franchise and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Some people have felt that a lot of the small details, such as ingredients for potions, what Dragons, Hippogriffs, and other creatures eat, and even how three tools can be used to be master of death, seems a little too atheistic or science-based. Even Rowling herself said that even though she's a believer in God, she' couldn't pretend that she's not doubt-written about a lot of things. Tolkien's Middle-Earth mythology , at least, reflects on accepting God's existence, not to mention that Tolkien was raised as a devoted Catholic.

@alexinitalics1884 жыл бұрын
His Dark materials has now been made into a BBC series and it's very good. Since it's a series, the ending is not changed to be like the movie. The actress playing Lyra was in the movie Logan and is better at acting than the actress in this movie was. Also, Lin Manuel Miranda.
@amyliaclenny18663 жыл бұрын
Strangely enough, while I can buy Lin Manuel Miranda as a Founding Father, he's much less believable as a Southern Westerner cow-boy type. Lee Scorsby was supposed to be that. He played a good Lee, just no where near as good as Sam Elliott. A lot of his winning points for that performance are due to Hester & the extended amount of screen time they got because the TV series had more material to work with. I didn't decide I liked Lin Manuel Miranda's Lee Scorsby performance until his dying scene. That was the pivotal moment that tugged at my heartstrings & brought me back to that scene in the books. Until that moment I wasn't sure that this adaptation of Lee's character was a good one. Now... It's still not as good as the books, but it's passable. He successfully got me to feel a feeling. Or at least, the show writers did.

I love these books. I really thought the movie nailed the alterna-London of the book. The costumes and sets are beautiful, and if nothing else gave us an amazing visual for what this world looks like. The casting of Ian McKellan, Sam Elliott, and Nicole Kidman are also great. The script is flawed, but one of the most effed up parts for me was always that damn ending. Love it for the eye feels and atmosphere. What happened to this movie (at least what I've read) is that after a test screening, some stupid executives found the ending too dark and "non-popcorn" and had it cut. Without the ending, they thought the movie would be more coherent (yeah sure) if they inverted the order of Bolvangar and Svalbard. And they cut a lot of stuff actually, they even fired the director's editor and made a new cut without the participation of the director. If you want to take a look on how the movie was before its vandalization by the studio, check this out: www.northern-lights-fanedit.com/content/articles
@Luka11806 жыл бұрын
Another explanation is they wanted to keep it out of the film for a sequel. But then the Vatican and churches in the US destroyed the chances of that ever happening. Shame on them! However, there's actually a lot of scenes that was cut, most of them what was more human and warm about the books. Like scenes of Lyra spending time with the Gypsies on the boat. I really want to see a director's cut. I fear, though, that we have to wait a decade more or so before we see that :( They did complete some of the visual effects for the ending by the way.

Samaru onesixthree Idiots, they go to all the trouble of adapting a trilogy and they cave in at the last moment. Thank you, but what about all the authoritarian & abuse of religious institution themes & narratives from the book? They're utterly missing in the film.
@Samaru1638 жыл бұрын
Mr.Northwind I wouldn't really say that the series "abuses" religious themes and institutions, it just portrays them in a different light. Instead of showing The Church as a good, kind institution, the books show it as a corrupt and paranoid force that wants to keep everyone in-check. And there is truth to that in human history. But of course, you can't show that in a movie because the focus groups say so.
@Mister-Thirteen8 жыл бұрын
Samaru onesixthree Sorry forgive me for not being clear, I meant the Themes of the abuses of Religious institutions by those very same institutions. But thank you regardless.

I recently acquired a copy of His Dark Materials series. I've finished the first book so far and I'm looking forward to other two. My first experience with this series was actually seeing the movie. So there's that. Anyway, book was better. And as for daemons, I would love one. I wonder what shape mine would take. Anyway, it's a brilliant concept and I could spend hours discussing and theorizing on it.

In her defense Dakota became a pretty good actor when she grew up. She was awesome in Skins.

What I don't get it is why CGI for the daemons? I mean, we have cats and mice in real life. I know CGI is cheap but, is really cheaper than having a trained cat or a mouse walking in a map? and isn't also easier for the actor to interact with? I mean, with the bears is kind of logic, because of everything they do on the film and their attire is obvious easier than having train bears, but what's the point with all other animals?
@ElOchentero9 жыл бұрын
Eamonn Deane it's really more expensive to have a trainer? but even so, the art suffers, I mean, if the CGI were good at least, like the one in King Kong or Planet of the Apes, but is not. If you are going to use CGI do it perfectly or don't do it at all.
@ElOchentero9 жыл бұрын
Eamonn Deane but animals are already train for those stuffl, or they were before CGI
@ElOchentero9 жыл бұрын
Well it is true, part of the problem is bad CGI, no CGI per se, never-the-less filmmakers have became lazy and dependant of CGI. Babe didn't use CGI and had predators and prey in the same scenes.
@jessiebunny47577 жыл бұрын
James Bond! lol. also why does her daemon keep changing from a ferret, to a cat, and back to a ferret again? Was this in the book? too long a go to remember, or is it a mistake?
@KrimsonRogue7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's canon with the book. It's symbolic of the potential kids have as they grow up.
@forestgrump47236 жыл бұрын
Your Daemon doesn't settle until you yourself kind of settle into who you're going to be. There was a side note about a guy in the book who couldn't leave the water because his daemon settled as a dolphin.

I'm just going through your channels playlist and I just found out that this movie was originally a book. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I was just curious as to see what you thought about it. I might actually check those books out, I cannot believe I didn't know they even existed.

Linkara's ad brought me here, and I subscribed right away! I've been looking for someone who entertainingly compares books to their movies like this. Thank you. His Dark Materials is one of my favorite trilogies. I was very sad when The Subtle Knife was canceled, as that's my favorite of the three. But overall, even with loving the books, I still kind of enjoy the movie, I guess you can call it a guilty pleasure. Anyway, thanks for this review.
@KrimsonRogue10 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I love His Dark Materials. When I first heard they were making a movie series out of the books, I jumped up and told my father that I really wanted to audition for the part of Will. Such a shame the rest of the trilogy was cancelled, though they really could have done a better job at the first one. :P

I hear ya, and I agree. Maybe one day someone will come along and try it again.

the book was better. but how long has it been sense you read it? A lot of the things your complaining about are if not true at least partly true to the book. James bond is meant to get captured and not come back till the end and the girl dose mostly figure out the compass on her own even explaining how she works it to others at points saying how she "just feels it" also leave the kid alone i dont think you could have done as good a job at 13ish
@amandablind10586 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Walsh I know your comment was 2 years ago. But I just reread the books and I was thinking the same thing! A lot of things he is complaining about are the things that were in the books. Like what you said and and the scene with the golden monkey attacking pan and the bear daemon thing and don’t get me wrong I was not amused with the movie but a lot of what was pointed out here was in the books.

You should do the show comparison with the movie and update to “the book was better” on how well the show did a justify version from the book.

It's been so long sense I read the series or watched the movie. It doesn't seem that bad though. And personally I thought the acting was good. But yeah no movie can ever be as good. Also, this guy is amazing and ranting and hilarious, and I will probably subscribe. Even though nothing rhymes with orange

I'm honestly torn after seeing the HBO series adaptation of this. On one hand they do SO *SO* much better with the story. On the other the movie completely beats its ass on acting in terms of pretty much every character with the exceptions of Lyra and Lord Asriel Nicole Kidman was a way better Coulter Christopher Lee for the 30 seconds hes in the movie is a better Lord Boreal Ian McKellen was FAR better voicing Iorek. Sam Elliott...come one theres no comparing Elliott's Scoresby with whatever the hell that was in the show. If only they would combine the more faithful storytelling with the greater actors. It would be an absolute smash hit.
