Chekhov's Nero net... The ending wasnt out of nowhere. If you paid attention in the middle of the film the camera shows a screen going through an advertisement clearly talking about the net. It wasnt mentioned directly by any of the actors but unless you don't pay attention it was hard to miss. I never read the book and had no ideas how it was going to end but when I saw that ad I knew it would have something to do with it. Similar to chekhov's gun it was simply too out of left field to be background-dressing.

I find the ending rather fitting due to the dystopian setting, not to mention, he's been a cold blooded killer in the beginning, repossessing artiforgs so many times with death being a usual outcome when vital organs are repossessed. Redemption at that point is often out of reach. And let's not forget that the society in this dystopian future has practically accepted the repossession of overly expensive artificial organs as something normal. Cyberpunk is dark by it's nature.

I absolutely loved the book! It was a well told story and the ending was wonderful. The movie had it's own charms and I honestly didn't think the dream ending was a cop out. I think it fit in really well and coherently with the rest of the movie. I liked what the author said about writing the screenplay. He said that the book and screenplay were like twins raised in separate households. They had the same face but were completely different entities. I totally understood that after watching the movie. Hmm, I was one of the people who saw the premise behind the film and pretty much just wrote it off as stealing the idea from Repo! The Genetic Opera, interesting to know that it might not have been the case; Repo! is still _technically_ older as the original stage version came about in 2002 but it wasn't exactly very well known so it can cast some doubt over accusations of "Who did it first"? Also the opening line to the book, for whatever reason, makes me think of a rather infamously fucked up line from "Flesh for Frankenstein," (AKA Andy Warhol's Frankenstein despite Andy Warhol not having anything to do with it save for bringing it stateside) "To know death, Otto, you must first fuck life... in the gallbladder!"

The book may not have been ripped off from the concept, but apparently they were filming in the same studio, and tried to hire the actors from repo for repo men. Personally I found repo to be memorable. It had a unique look, and sound. And did so much with what little they had. Hell even Paris Hilton was extremely dedicated to the movie, not only did she come in, and nailed the audition, and had a scrapbook with how she saw the character, she also donated costumes, and saved the movie by making an appearance at a club, and donated her fee so that they could continue film. With repo men it looked kinda generic. Maybe I’m biased, but I wasn’t that impressed with repo men

I HATE "It was all just a dream" fan theories! And to see it be the official ending of a movie makes it WORSE!
@RealQwaqa8 жыл бұрын
Oh, come on. The ending is the best part! At the begining this movie is an exploration of the character and it stays that way until the end. The fact that the last 20 minutes represent happiest dreams protagonist could come up with tells us so much about him. This is the man who dreams of having weird surgery/sex with the half-cyborg woman. The man who dreams about his son tasing his wife. And the best part is that it ramps up slowly. Unlike Brazil which jumps into dream way too quickly and obviosly. Here you get acclimated to the craziness and do not question it just like the protagonist. The only way it could be improved is by cutting movie at the beach and forsing people to put it all together by themselves. But I guess it is too much. Sometimes you have to spell it out.
@SirPloff8 жыл бұрын
If the movie was cut at the beach I am pretty sure fans of the movie would come up with that "It is the neural network thingie and we actually witness what the guy dreams about." Just like in minority report, the movie had an interesting plot that gets wasted and good actors that were wasted, or at least tried to make the movie better. The movie is still shit and the only thing between this ending and minority report ending is that they slap it in your face that the guy is dreaming all the nonsense. You are like those guys who say the reason why Ash in Pokemon doesn't age is because he is in a coma and dreaming all this lunacy.
@RealQwaqa8 жыл бұрын
For the record, I really hate those stupid fan theories. And if the movie were to stop right after the glich part it would be sufficient enough. Everything was already set up. No need for unnecessary speculations.
@SirPloff8 жыл бұрын
Then it might as well be like Total Recall. However the problem is that in Total Recall Arnold gets the memory transplant thingy, in Minority Report Tom cruise goes into the stasis things. In this we get no reason for the "It is all a dream" bullshit except that the producers wanted to have it to make it seem more clever and weird, only ending with shit that messes everything up.
@RealQwaqa8 жыл бұрын
True. There was no clear transition. But I am still maintaining, that the real value of the ending comes from the fact that it is a way to learn the character from the inside. What do we know about him by the end? That his personal heaven is filled with knives, and, death, and lots, and lots of blood.
@SirPloff8 жыл бұрын
Isn't the fact that the main character is pretty fucked up considering what his job is, and how he was willing to go murder people other people who don't have artificial gonads. When he steals the lung suit we don't get to see what happened to the guy who wore it, was he tased? I think he was chopped to pieces considering how he outright says to his boss he is going to kill everyone who come after him so this and his actions are already showing how mentally psychotic this character is, you don't need the added nerual linker bullshit to tell the viewer the character because the actor is good enough to do that already. It is an pointless ending.

Tbh, the ending really works for me, I mean, I hate it, in the sense that the characters were all in a happy place, but sometimes the sad ending works well (See Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the dark side ending is the canon one and its amazing, except for one character death, she was so adorable). My friend showed me this movie, and I hated the ending at first, but once you think about it, that blow to the head would kill him, no question, and the fact that everything else afterwards seems really really easy kind of points towards the "not-real" ending. Like, he wrecked an entire group of people trained just as well as him, as well as breaking into the "castle" with extreme ease. The actions of the guards also suits him perfectly in that sense. Jake's change of heart made no sense when watching it either, he goes through this entire thing completely opposed to what Remy is doing, then goes "eh fuck it, the power of boners is stronger" and kills his boss? Plus, as I said, sometimes its nice to see the bad guys win.

The Genetic Opera premiered off-off-broadway, but it always dominates search results Most people would choose a punchline of "we're working out the kinks" or "it's supposed to do that." "That was the wrong gun" makes such perfect sense but is JUST unexpected enough to catch me a bit off-guard I'd imagine doing the mouth last makes perfect sense, considering how disgusting human mouths are. We don't even have antibacterial saliva. Wait, you DON'T like Brazil's ending? I can't stand the cut-down version

The edited ending is the WORST. So cheesy and trite.

The Ending To This Movie Pissed Me Off, Just Like The Ending To "Elysium" 😭😭 I Wanted It To Be A Happy Ending For Both Of Those Movies, But They're Still Dope Ass Movies Nonetheless 😂👌🏿💯🔥

I haven't read the book, and maybe it was just too much of a killjoy for me, but the ending absolutely ruined the movie for me. I'm all for a solid downer ending if it's earned, but in this case it felt misanthropic and mean-spirited and that's about it- it literally just wanted you to walk out of the movie feeling like garbage.

I think they were going for a sort of cruel ending that would've fit the tone of the story so far.. but I don't think they pulled it off right.. I blame it on the cop-out feeling the whole "this never happened" trope gives the audience.. It just feels like you're being cheated on, it's cheap. But I would've been ok without the "happy beach" ending. Perhaps one where he manages to help the woman, but in the end, get's repo'ed himself, ending in the cruel irony I think the film makers where shooting for.

As cool or well made as this movie may be, I refuse to watch it because of the gore. I still feel like I'm going to throw up whenever I try to even watch your funny/ insightful reviews. Blood I can take, but poking around inside of someones guts .... [gulp] no sir.

Well now I'm glad I kept the gorier parts out of the review. XD
