Out of all the remakes that Disney is cranking out they're just sitting over a Black Cauldron remake or a complete adaptation of the Prydain Chronicles which are a literal gold mine for Disney.

I feel like they started it as an adults animated film then some high up exec was like "S'cuse me? This is disney, we make children's films! Drop at least a third of the violence, bland out the characters so they can be self inserts and for gods sakes throw in SOMETHING that's fluffy and cute!" So they had to struggle with kiddifying it while still trying to capture a more adult tone.... which in the end just made it appeal to neither audience until nostalgia glasses caught it. Everything looks better through nostalgia glasses.

This book series wasn't so popular in Belgium. The reason why I came to know it is because, lords of the rings is for the most part based on Anglo saxon mythologie, and since a lot of fantasy books are based on the lords of the rings, a lot of fantasy books on Anglo saxon mythology. The chonicles of pyrdain are based on Welsh mythology, which because it was something different then what i was used to, got me interessted.
@BluePenguin2005 жыл бұрын
Pieter Van Keymeulen why would the Anglo-Saxon influence not make it popular? I don’t intend to sound ignorant or anything, I’m just curious as to why that would be (a historical reason perhaps?). Or was because it was welsh inspired it wasn’t as appealing to the wider demographic?

A thought on Taran: I realize that Disney may have been trying to create a flawed hero who makes mistakes and misjudgments, and grows beyond them. That's what makes a well-rounded character. But they undercut themselves by making Taran such a whiner from the get-go--we need to WANT to see him achieve his goals, instead of rolling our eyes and muttering, "Will you just button your lip for five minutes?" Look at Luke Skywalker--he was a bit of a whiner when we first met him, but he also had likable qualities--for example, he showed kindness to his new droids even as he griped over being stuck on Tattooine. So we related to him and wanted to see him succeed. (Kind of a shame that they cut out the scene of him hanging out with his buddies in Anchorhead--that would have made him even more relatable.) Taran just comes off as an annoying kid with delusions of grandeur that he never really achieved--as you said, his triumphs are mainly accidental. (They probably didn't make him more active in the Horned King's defeat because they got cold feet about showing a twelve-year-old committing murder, even of a villain...never mind that in the original Treasure Island, they had ten-year-old Jim Hawkins shoot a pirate dead!)

This book series also has a lot of references to Welsh mythology. Arawn is the ruler of the Annwfn, the Other World, although in the books they made him a villain and respelled his land as Annuvin. The three witches seem to represent Ceridwen, or in a broader sense, the concept of the Celtic Triple Goddess. They raised Dallben, which shows how old they really are, and the story of how Dallben left them is that he burned himself helping them make a potion, and then sucking on the burn gave him knowledge. This is a direct lift from the story of Taliesin. The interesting thing is Taliesin is also a background character in the books. The symbol that bards use is actually the Awen, the symbol for inspiration from the same story. Gwydion and the Sons of Don are nephews of King Math, and Gwydion really was close to the king, close enough to enlist his help finding a wife for his adopted son. Pigs in Welsh mythology are sacred and show up a lot, so it makes sense Hen Wen is oracular. The Cauldron of Rebirth did raise zombie armies, but it was in the hands of the King of Ireland for its main story. I could go on.

Maybe the Black Cauldron could have been a good Dark Fantasy Film on its own back in the 80s if Disney took risks and added all of the deleted scenes. Also, there was a deleted scene where Taren was grieving over Gurgi which could have made the ending a bit more emotional. And there was the prologue scene of the Fair Folk seeing the Horned King burning an entire village during the war.

I think another thing that may have ruined this movie's chances was that is was trying to adapt a book that was part of a series. Disney are known for doing their versions of the Grimms Brothers fairytales, but I think they got away with not fully adapting the works because of how old the tales were by the time Disney started making their princess movies. And they mostly did a bunch of original works (except Jungle Book before Walt died) that were single stories before this film. So I don't think they had a whole lot of experience in adapting books faithfully to screen compared to other studios at the time. And the fact that they merged the first two books together and changed things around to fit their version of the story didn't help matters. I do wonder if they do decide to remake it with the animation technology we have now...probably won't happen, but hey, you never know.

I still disagree with the "too dark" part. It was fun dark. But yeah, I can see why it's considered bad. I mean, with that pseudo-comic, the pacing was a lot crisper and it didn't come with Gurgi's voice, so I guess I really got lucky as a kid that I only experienced the merchandise but not the movie itself :D

The way i see it, Taran giving up his desired weapon for Gurgi is a good moral lesson to kids. Sometimes in order to be the hero you want to be, you gotta sacrifice something like a sword. Gurgi, who always ran from danger out of self preserving, developed bravery by self sacrifice to the group of people he liked and in return, Tatan rejects the one item he desired most thus reviving the one creature whose life saved the entirity of Prytain. Taran may have been a total idiot for doing it but theres no more danger after the Horned King is destroyed, his warriors and henchman have scattered and the flying creatures (screw it, im calling them wyverns) have flown away. So why would Taran need it anymore?

Having never read the books (yet, but knowing the kind of stuff that inspired it, it's totally my thing and I want to read the books so much), I actually didn't hate the movie. I found it charming. However, I know that if I had read the books, I would be tearing my hair out.

This was originally for a teen audience. The guy currently in charge did not like that and demanded it for children and demanded a plethora of changes that were hard to do and most of the original movie was lost.

I still disagree when people say this is a bad movie. While it may not be as good as I remembered it, (I was 3 when I first saw this) I still very much like the movie. Although, that "Best. Day. Ever." joke is totally me.

Out of all of the movies Disney remade, I think this one is most necessary.

11:22 to be fair they were in a castle full of armed baddies...I’d probably want something to fight with. Not condoning grave robbing though! (A missed opportunity was mentioning how princess elonwy was a sorceress.)

Any chance you could do a cut of all the storyline segments at some point? Maybe after a full season or something like that. Just so that it can be viewed as a full product rather than little snippets.

Personally, I love The Black Cauldron. Just like I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

"The audience is not sober." In my best Tommy Wiseau voice, "I'm not." This movie didn't bother me as a kid, and when I was old enough to read the books, 3rd grade me got offended. Adult me realizes what Don Bluth was reaching for, and failed to grasp.

I looooved the bad DnD puns :) also, I like this movie because of the dark tone. The story telling and the characters are no favorites of mine, but it has some spooky visuals that are awesome! anyways, loved to hear your thoughts on this and how it was adapted!

I liked this a lot growing up, but then again I was just obsessed with swords so that helped the movie a lot.

My favorite Disney movie to date! Watched all the time as a kid, I always liked the villans better than the heros in Disney movies and the Horned King was the best there was! Dark with cute stupid Gergie! I showed this to my partner who had never heard of it and he loved it! Never read the books but as a kid this was one of the movies I watched all the time!

Isn't that 'jumping to the last five minutes of the movie' basically what Merlin does in Sword in the Stone?

Any chance you might try to review Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight? I'm interested in seeing how it faired in comparison to the book. Then again, the animatuon and cgi that it was blended with was just outright abysmal.

I've seen the movie. I thought that the animation wasn't that bad, but yeah, it really didn't mix with the CG at all. I just need to find the book and give that one a shot at some point.

I love the movie. Sure, the animation us terrible but I never really cared about that. I was in fact pleasantly surprised to see how much the movie was like the book. A lot of the things that I loved about the book made it into the movie, and it was a delight to watch.

Krimson, a site called Better World Books has the book for under $4 and shipping is free. I love that site so much :) cheap books, frequent sales (every couple months, you can get 30% off their regular price on 4+ books), always free shipping, and they support literacy programs. Also, i love your review, as always :)

Notice how the sword in the movie seems like the inspiration for the master sword in Legend of Zelda.

Have you thought of doing a review on anything related to Peter Pan? I’d be interested to see your words on the mythos and its psychology, as well as how well its respective adaptation does (I’m just a huge fan of Peter Pan XD)

Can I make an suggestion for the next The Book is Better? I would like to see you do TV episode adaptions. Doctor Who: Human Nature would be a good one.

I know I saw this as a kid because I bought the dvd as an adult purely due to curiosity. What about this movie made me forget basically all of it? Now we know.
