Kaa is actually a very interesting character in terms of his morals in the book - he even at one point warns Mowgli to be careful because he might one day be hungry enough to eat the Man-cub despite the fact that he kind of likes him. Any Jungle Book adaptation that treated Kaa as an anti-hero/loose-cannon kind of character would be intriguing.

I can actually explain why Kaa's design changes--in his first scene he was animated by Ollie Johnston, but in his second scene he was animated by Milt Kahl. The two had such different art styles that the change was kind of inevitable; the same exact thing happened to Duchess' design in "The Aristocats".
@fredrogers4717
@fredrogers4717 5 жыл бұрын
Actually it was Frank Thomas who animated Kaa in the first encounter and Milt Kahl helped animate the first scene after Mowgli is coiled up. Both of them animated the second sequence (Frank Thomas: Kaa coiling Mowgli/“Trust in Me”, Milt Kahl (Shere Khan and Kaa). However, there was never actually a true explanation/source for the redesign of Kaa for the second encounter

I always found that scene with Ka and Mowgli in this movie surreal. The voice actor for Ka plays Winnie the Pooh while Mowgli's plays Christopher Robin. So it's Pooh trying to eat Christopher Robin...yeah...God that sounds like I described a bad fan fic.

I actually had an idea for an all Human Jungle Book set in India during British Occupation of the late 1800s. Mowgli would be the son of a rich Indian Family who were murdered by Shere Khan, a British Serial Killer. Bagheera would be a member of the Police, tasked to escort Mowgli out of the city, which would serve as the titular Jungle. Colonel Hathi would be a member of the British Army and so on.

+eastwing329 It was more reminiscent of the Disney version, I admit. And just one of my random ideas that I get. Hell, Shere Khan's intro was basically the same as the movie, though with him in a crowd and the doe in the river being replaced by a woman bathing in the Ganges River. He would have also had a stark white suit and hat along with a cane knife with a tiger handle. I really over think these things.

+3DSDF I know, right?! I mean, why is it the original Disney animated version cost less money than the live-action 1994 version does on Amazon?! Did they really expect to think that the 1994 version was *THAT* rare of a gem in the Disney Vault? Or for that matter, why don't they just release the movie on Blu-Ray, instead?! That could work.
@3DSDF

Xaviergray87 I would've never expected for the live-action to be worth more than the animated version. Matter of fact, I remember another live-action movie. I think it was about the Jungle Book, but I'm not certain. I just remember a bear being voiced by an actor, but I do know that it's not a Dr. Dolittle movie.

I thought it was kind of interesting the change in Shere Khan's character myself. In the books, I never really felt like he was threatening. Right from the start Mother Wolf is telling him off, and he pretty much gets shooed away or told off every time he appears until Mowgli kills him by just having him run over. I think the Disney Shere Khan has more of a presence than the book. However, the books are far more interesting and complex in comparison. Mowgli doesn't act like he just got to the jungle yesterday - he's lived there and he knows what he's doing. Other animals are intimidated by him because, even though he's small and weak, they realize what a threat man can be. Men know things like how to control the red flower. And also, you may be able to kill one man, but if you do more and more men will come for you, and they're very intelligent. The books also have a lot of good characters who are mostly missing from the movie. And, of course, it's missing the issue of things like Mowgli out-living everyone he knows. Some older books are a bit hard to read because they have a different style, but I think "The Jungle Book" and "The Second Jungle Book" are both still really enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend them.
@cartooncritique6625

Yeah, the book version of Shere Khan is almost something of a sympathetic villain when you consider that he's also meant to be lame (something I'm surprised Krimson didn't mention in the review); meaning throughout the book everybody is essentially pushing around a poor old cripple. Incidentally, I think the book version of Shere Khan made it's way into Disney's Lion King as I can't help but notice some slight parallels between book Khan and Scar.
@emeryltekutsu4357
@emeryltekutsu4357 Жыл бұрын
@@cartooncritique6625 I was surprised when I read it because he's almost a non-entity in the book. He's barely ever around and hardly a threat and then he dies. I can see why they would have wanted to build him up as a better villain. As far as being a villain in the book, he never seemed intimidating to me, even if I overall like the book. I do like how they reimagined him a bit more, I think, because he had a lot more presence.

Shere Kaun is personally a favorite of mine. He was sophisticated yet viscous as Krimson said. Personally Scar should have been more like him, I like Scar but the movie could've made him more interesting if they stayed true to the song in the musical "The Madness Of Scar". Also, the reason why Kaun hates man is a little ambiguous, though personally I saw certain scenes hinting at it.

I never read the book, but I did see the animated film (the original one) and the 1994 Live action Jungle Book movie starring Lena Headey and Jason Scott Lee was my favorite version. The live action one was the movie where I first encountered Lena. Anyway, the music in the animated version was superb. And the voice acting was splendid. So that part of the film was great. One interesting fact I discovered recently is that in the UP of Michigan there are two towns (100 miles apart) named Rudyard and Kipling. And yes, they were named after the Jungle Book author.

I re-watched this film a few days ago as well, just to prepare myself for the re-make/re-adaptation. I definitely agree with you on the film having my perception changed as an adult as opposed to the nostalgic life I had as a kid. As for the new film in which I saw yesterday, honestly I can say it's a Disney Remake/re-adaptation done right!!! much more than the 1994 film which was more of a Tarzan knock-off. It does an incredible job in fleshing out the character's making them just as alive as the film's setting, not to mention they made it overall it's own 'film' with a little more concentration on the essence of Kipling's work.There wasn't much concentration on the music as well, it's just there as a bit of a throw back due to the film being a direct re-make of the 1976 animated film, Nonetheless I'll say it's definitely my favourite Jungle Book adaptation to date along with the Chuck Jones shorts.

ah, Phil Harris. One of the best comedians on the Jack Benny program, later to have his own show with his wife, Alice Faye. Fun fact: they were actually married until Alice's death. Phil was a band director first, a singer second, and an actor third, and he was good at all these things...though some may argue otherwise.

10:23 I have a theory for Kaas eye shape changed! After the 1st encounter in the movie, Kaa might have failed trying to catch another meal for his hypnotic grasp. He could have fell down the tree a lot faster and harder than his 1st encounter with Mowgli in the film. Kaa might have damaged his head when he hit the ground causing his eyes to be stuck like that as we see when he gets chucked down the tree by Mowgli in the 2nd encounter, Kaas eyes become back to normal. But yet again in The Jungle Book 2, his eyes constantly change in all his scenes!

My dad doesn't like this movie very much. He likes the tunes, but not the movie itself. He read the book, and he can't get over what Disney did to his man Baloo. While I did see this version first, I also saw this animated mini-series that adapted the same material. I don't know if he was a female in this version, or just voiced by one, but Kaa was my favourite. Almost seemed like an omnipotent trickster god who was always lurking behind the scenes, motivated only by his own whims. He wasn't a henchman or nothing, he just did what seemed like the most interesting thing to do.

One thing I've always wondered about the movie versions of this story.....IF Shere Khan was so determined to kill Mowgli, why did Bagheera think taking him back to the man village would mean Mowgli would be safe from Shere Khan? Why couldn't Shere Khan just go kill him in the village? I know the Jungle Book 2 sucked, but it clearly showed that even though Mowgli was all "civilized" it didn't mean Shere Khan had forgotten him.

As a student of East and South Asian studies in the University of Tel Aviv, When I watch this movie or anyother variation of this kind, I tend to do two things: The first is to categorize it in the orientalist literature of the British Raj. 2. I tend to listen to the Hindi version of the song " my own home" since this also reflects Hindu or specific Brahamic political leaders of the Indian national Congress like Nehru and Gandhi who used some elements of this kind of literature to reshape the political consciousness of the Hindu majority in the sub-continent to create a political-Idelogical autarkick utopia precisely of this kind of literature, and I'm using elements from Benedict Anderson's book "imagined communities "to base my collegues research on the subject.

Well I hated it the first time I watched it. actually I've only watched it and the even worse sequal once. And as for the live action... well I have not even gone there. But this was aweful. Literally every single character was, well, out of character. Lets see, the ones you touched on such as Kaa being Mogli's ally, and baloo being the instructor of the young wolf cubs, are there. But then we have Mogli who was ... very different. I mean seriously, this mogli is a spoiler, kocky little brat. The character of the series, while also being kind of kocky was also much more intelligent, And somewhat less of an asshole. Then we have hathy, who in the books is very wise concidered a very important figure in the jungle. As well as again being on Mogli's side. He's such an important figure that it's even stated as one of the most important laws of the jungle "And trouble not Hathy the silent" Sheer Khan was I'll admit perfect, especially compared to what everyone else is doing. I'm not sure, about akela, honestly the change of plot made him almost non-existant, which is a huge insult to him. And as for Bagheera, well, ... Nope, I can't even talk about this one. It was just plan aweful. And then there's the plot change. Which as I already mentioned pissed me off a lot. Like.... nope it's just aweful. This sucked. but at least [q~"]had some parts being vaguely similar to the books, at least, kinda ish. But the sequal ... lets just say I'm very disappointed with Disney.

Sheer Khan sounds like Tony Jay. .......is........is he gonna turn Mowgli into a Wraith and make him hunt souls for him? Cause that would be baller. Gotta flip that coin til it lands on it's edge.

"song about the power of friendship". Have you actually LISTENED to the lyrics? Who comes around/To pluck you up/When you are down And when you're outside, looking in/Who's there to open the door? Who's always eager to extend/A friendly claw? And when you're lost in dire need/Who's at your side at lightning speed? We're friends with every creature/Comin' down the pike In fact we never met an animal/We didn't like (didn't like) Now think: vultures! LITERALLY! For those who still don't get it: they're singing about eating those "friends" (but only at the bitter end, and they promise they'll be there the moment you're in trouble - they won't get you OUT mind you but they will ensure your body won't go to waste; and if your insides are on the outside, don't worry, they'll open your ribcage for you, etc, etc). It's a disney staple of getting - seriously dark - shit past the radar.

The Jungle Book with that Hawaiian guy from Lilo and Stitch as well as that Jungle Book film where Mowgli's disappearance in his mother's village is narrated to British/american woman by an elderly Buldeo is way more intresting then the Disney version that feels annoying as hell.

I vaguely remember watching a version of the jungle book when I was younger that I really want to see again but all I can remember is it was animated and had a transition scene with a white peacock cawing in the morning. Anyone got any info on this movie?

This version, perhaps? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGfZgp99odqWjbM Though Mao (the peacock) doesn't seem to be white in that one.

I decided to check eBay to see if the 1994 movie was any cheaper there--and almost no one there has it. Some DVDs are cheaper, but they're all in PAL. The rest--yeah, they're about as expensive as what's on Amazon.

re: Reused animation. Turns out it's actually harder to redraw previous animation than to make new animation, so the way some segments were reused in other movies was due to the director wanting to be sure that his films did what he already knew WORKED. It didn't save time, it didn't save money, it was a fearful director that wanted to use what had previously succeeded. geekdad.com/2015/06/disneys-recycled-animation/

You would have to compare the 90s jungle book to Tarzan, because it's a Tarzan story set in India rather then Africa. Mowgli was a ass kicking adult, a king of the jungle if you will, who falls in love with a British woman after her father brings her into the jungle and defeats her evil fiancé. That's almost the exact plot of the first Tarzan.
