This song about a school shooting. When asked why she did it she said " I don't like Mondays".

@@jimnfl7134 Fuck, you're dumb. "According to Geldof, he wrote the song after reading a telex report[7] at Georgia State University's campus radio station, WRAS, on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children in a school playground at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California, on 29 January 1979, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer." "I Don't Like Mondays" was a hit for The Boomtown Rats in 1979. It was written in response to one of the first school shootings in which a teenage girl trained her father's hunting rifle on an elementary school across the street from her house, killing two adults and injuring eight children. A reporter reached the shooter by phone before she was arrested and asked her why she did it. She reportedly answered: "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day," an answer which shocked Bob Geldof into writing the song. Years later it was reported that her father had been molesting her for years.

As someone mentioned, this is based on a real school shooting that occurred in 1979. The girl responsible was actually able to return home before she was captured, and an enterprising reporter called her home phone and she answered. The reporter said "Tell me why?" to which she replied "I don't like Mondays".

She didn't return home - She lived across the street from the Elementary School. She never left her house.

The lead guy in this band (Bob Geldof) played the main character in the movie "Pink Floyd the Wall". He is the guy who put together Band Aid and Live Aid charities that were focused on feeding starving people in Africa. Super cool guy all around!

@@AtomicVampire1 You lucky bastard... lol Honestly, I admire this man a lot, he is one of the most important guys in 80s music to me. Of course his Ultravox stuff had the most impact on everyone, I guess, but much of his solo stuff is also quite underrated plus he was the mastermind behind Visage, played guitar with Thin Lizzy, was in Rich Kids in the 70s and was also even considered as the frontman for the Sex Pistols by Malcolm McLaren once. What an icon. Sadly I saw him only once live with an acoustic set of his greatest hits from different eras and bands in his career. That was actually awesome, a moment I'll never forget. He's a living legend for sure. At least to me.

Being an old fart, this is so emblematic of the late 1970s. The song was about an horrific incident but was so musically compelling. What was so inspirational(?) about the song was that the Boomtown Rats were a punk band and were singing about a real world event. I have a heavy freight of memories from this era.

@@asfdadfgdasfh4444 Thanks. No fireworks video this year - after last year's, one of the (new) neighbors complained and before I got a chance to say something very very rude to her, my brother agreed to curtail it. And just as well because he's had some crazy dental work and a back problem. But I have eight websites that give info on the big fireworks displays in eight states, and that's what I work on this time of year.

I don't know what's creepier. The children of the corn in this video or the line "And the lesson today is how to die". And to think when this came out, my local radio station would play this every Monday just because the DJ's were bummed about the weekend being over.

Was always a huge fan of this song but never knew it was about a school shooting until years later. Still a big fan years later even after knowing now what it's really about. It just gives it a more somber mood for me than it ever did before. Lead singer Geldof is such a prolific artist.

Bob Geldoff has stated that he's sorry he released this song because it gives too much publicity to the girl (woman) and that's definitely not his intention. It brought her a lot of public attention.
