Marlin saw his one wife Coral killed by a barracuda and he was powerless to save her, so he's more than understandably overprotective. Mack on the other wing, probably had close calls with predators as a duckling because his parents let him wander off too often to potentially dangerous places to play and explore, and he was in a word, "scared straight" and resolved to be a better father to his own children.
