The DS1 has been on my board since the early 80s along with my GE7 EQ and Boss BD2 Bluesdriver....the DS1 has been a workhorse for me but with those 3 pedals I can get any tone I'll ever need for gain or boost. I've used the same 5 Boss pedals for decades.

@@marvinthemartian6788 try setting it straight and raising the level a notch above 0 ....I boost the mids in front of the DS 1 with a strat and use it flat as a boost with humbuckers or P90s...some people mod them, I have a noise filter if I need one but haven't so far.

I almost always use the Boss EQ into the Boss Compressor into the DS1..into the Blues Driver ..into the Boss Digital Delay..into the Boss Dimension C....gets me the violin type tone I like...I think of Justin Haywards distortion with the Moody Blues when I dial in a DS1...that velvet zipper tone. Reverb I use on the amp. I like simple pedals that stay in one setting for the most part. Not into fiddling with knobs when I play. I like the gain, level and tone controls to be at 9 or 10 o'clock If I drop the gain I raise the level but rarely do that.

I generally use the DS-1 into clean tube amps with the tone at around 10 o clock, distortion low for bluesy type stuff…very dynamic. Versatile pedal that can be used in a bunch of different ways, it’s iconic for good reason.

The point about having the pedal add a bit of boost applies to any saturation pedal, because when you play with a band, generally everyone goes up a notch when distortion is kicked on. Having everything from clean to over-saturated lead tones all at the same perceived level is a great way to get lost in a mix. Plus these types of pedals don't truly do 'unity gain' as they are non-linear, so 'unity gain' is about perception and this can be affected by a whole bunch of factors. A common issue with players going from the bedroom to the stage is distortions/OD's etc are set really quietly, because they don't want to piss off family//housemates/neighbours etc and the increased RMS feels 'loud'. On stage it'll just disappear altogether because its just too quiet. The other issue is because of the increased RMS, the pedal isn't going to hit the amp in the same way at 'unity gain', what the amp receives is quieter compared to the peaks when you play clean, so there'll be none of that 'hair' that happens when you really dig in, so a bit of extra output from the pedal can help get that back. This is why a lot of players recommend having a bit of saturation already happening on the amp.

Very nice video! When I started playing electric, back in the late Pleistocene, we didn’t have much in the way of pedals to work with… if you wanted distortion, you bought a Twin Reverb and cranked it up and to hell with the neighbors complaining! A Boss DS was one of my first pedals, as I recall. Here’s a little secret so many young guitarists don’t get about pedals and tone… the fewer variables you work with, the easier it is to learn what kind of sounds you can get from your rig. I spent days and days with one guitar (Les Paul Jr), one amp (Twin Reverb) and one pedal (DS-1) playing every riff and chord I could think of, with every combination of dials on all 3, to get a clear idea of what my rig could sound like. Kind of what you did here, Jack, with 2 guitars, one pedal, and one amp. (FWIW, I do t have that DS any more, I switched to a TS-9 years ago and never looked back!)I bet most of your subscribers don’t realize how many hours of working out the combinations it took for you to make this short video. Excellent lesson, sir. Oh, and I loved the intro jam!

Great video with good tips. More of an SD1 guy myself, but got one of these on clearance for 10 dollars years ago and it’s currently in my pedal drawer. Keeping the tone knob low on both of these models is definitely key to getting great toned out of these. I’ve mainly used it as a boost in front of fhe SD1 to push a Marshall even harder, sounds awesome in this case! Might have to pull it out tomorrow lol

That's definitely a classic pedal. Kurt Cobain obviously thought so too. I remember my uncle using it (R.I.P.) and, the influence he had on me making me want to learn to play many moons ago. The DS-1 will always have a place in my heart`s pedalboard.

I really like the DS-1 a lot. I play a 2001 LP Jr. thru a Marshall Origin 50H into a 1965A Cab. I get breakup thru the head & set the DS-1 up @ Tone @ about 10:00 Level @ for a little boost & the Distortion @ 1:00 for dirt w/the amp & @ 3:00 for a clean amp. I sold my TS9 & kept the DS-1. It doesn't have the mid scoop like the TS9. I also REALLY like my Danelectro Daddy "O" Distortion pedal. It gets great tones & is built like a Tank. Great vid Jack!

DS1 is one of the first three pedals I purchased in the early 80's along with a Ibanez delay and Ibanez flanger. I'm not a musician, it's just a hobby and works well for me.

I've always loved this pedal and the SD-1. I like transparent overdrive that enhance an amp with a bit of dirt to work with. I've gotten superb tones with the DS-1. I never heard anyone complaining about these pedals till the advent of ultra gain pedals in the late 80s and I think it's a generational thing, partly. I played hard rock and metal and used this pedal. It worked fine for me to get a good, classic rock tone. Not a thrash level of gain, but enough to contour and perk up my tone. I use medium to high gain, but not dark, chuggy, muddy gain. Sometimes I use cleanish rhythms then use the pedal to boost for leads. I want clarity and punch and the DS-1 delivers the goods every time.

I didn't really keep my DS1 out until I got the Princeton. It works great with it- I tend more towards the DOD Gunslinger because of the extra eq awesomeness but I do love my DS1!

Great video and yeah I’m 47 , remember seeing alot of guys 5-10 years ahead of me playing shows with a ds-1 , rat or etc into like a peavey bandit or etc getting great sounds . I’ve seen $200 boutique pedals and Videos and they don’t impress me enough to blow the money . I’m a big believer of 4-5 pedals . 4 if your using maps distortion 5 if using pedal dirt . An od, eq or boost for some kick , a Wah , some kind of modulation and an echo or delay .. maybe a reverb if your amp doesn’t have it ..

This is my main distortion, though I have it in the Boss Super Feedbacker and Distortion form. I started with it when I began playing. I had an old Ampeg and this distortion just sounded well-rounded to my ears. There certainly are ones that may do it better, but this is still my go-to after all these years.

Hey Jack, I have a Monte Allums modded DS-1, which gives me 3 different voicings. I know about keeping tone knob around 9 or 10 o'clock. I will soon have a Spark Boost to give it a little more push. The Strat blues setting is a good tip. I have 6 Boss pedals in my pedal collection, more than any other brand. They are highly recommended. Great job!

I have modded my DS -1 with a "pumpkin" mod and a toggle switch which added an oscillating fuzz feature. While I used it as my main dirt for years, I felt I needed to add something different so I modded it. Love it now and fun to use

With the tone dialed back, I find it works great for legato stuff. There’s a reason why Joe Satriani and Steve Vai use them. And if you run it on low voltage and turn the tone control up, you can get some nasty (in a good way) fuzz tones.

i honestly prefer this pedal for those borderline sludgy and swampy sounding blues playing. It's got fuzz, but the notes always ring out. I could see someone more in that genre to have a different preference though

I have several DS 1 pedals oldest is an 82 and the newests is a 97 all I find to be extremely usable. They can be used side by side with a Blues Driver as well as with a Duallist and many others.

I like to run it with the gain down into an amp just in the edge. As long as the amp is compressing just a tad, but still clean, it sounds very good. Then stacking it with another more mid heavy od, chefs kiss

Works for me when I want a boost for leads and power chords with my strat + Princeton reverb. I just keep the distortion fairly low and the tone dialed to the right spot. It's very easy to make this pedal sound bad, but if you know how to use it then it works well.

This is the only pedal I have. I usually play bass but I was in a band where I was talked into playing and lead guitar we did Yardbirds "Heart fll of soul" the Byrds "8 miles high" Beatles "Taxman" and some other classic rock and blues songs and I used the DS-1. No complaints.

I use the DS-1 mainly to boost my ST-2 in front of a clean Fender FM (25/100), it also sounds great with my AD30. The drive of the ST-2 is all the way down, so it sounds similar to an old Plexi on the edge of breakup. You can get some decent sounds with the DS-1 in front of a clean amp, but I think the pedal was designed to boost an already overdriven Stack, at least we are talking about the late 70s and thats what most people used for amplification. I never heard a pedal doing this specific job better than the DS-1. It's also great for modding, but I left mine as it was and I like it that way. The SD-1 btw is also great in the setting mentioned above, it sits perfectly between the sound of the ST-2 alone and the sound of it being boosted by the DS-1. With these three pedals there are so much possibilities for drive sounds, I don't need any others.

Love the De Niro face btw. The DS1 was supposedly designed as a multi-instrumental pedal to be even used with keyboards so, that's why you have to be just extra aware of that tone knob.

Back in the 80s DS-1s were THE distortion pedal for keyboards and synths. Guitars aren't the only instruments that use pedals. Roland Juno and SH-101s were extremely popular in the 80s but they were considered to be "slightly thin" sounding compared to 70s synths. Many Rolands and others were enhanced by the Boss DS-1and had a much thicker and edgier sound as a result.

The difference between an early and a later DS-1 is quite big. I started out on a 1985 model, which I later sold. Around 2003 I bought a recent DS-1, which was a completely different sound and not usable to me. A few years back I found a very early long dash DS-1, and it's just wonderful.

Yup. Roll back the tone, keep the distortion at less than 12 Ooclock (usually 8-10 o' clock), and slight boost of the level and it worked well for me for 30 years.....

long time back I accidentally plugged my old DS1 into an AC adapter and of course it stopped working. Almost threw it out but eventually got around to attempting a fix. A 0.26 cent diode did the trick.

I use the MXR custom 78 with the crunch setting on (basically a keeley mod). I also like the digitech hot head with separate bass and treble controls. I love the hard clipping at lower gain.

The volume is where I had a problem with mine. Seems the DS was always lower than the guitar, even turning the guitar volume down. But....I will say this. I bought this one a few years back. And I noticed these newer ones cannot compare with the older ones from the 80's. I had one back in the 80's and that one was a beast. I know I will get a lock of flack for this, but I was given a Flamma distortion pedal and I was extremely surprised at how great that pedal sounds. That is one that is on my board right now.

Good video -- echos what many other "The DS-1 doesn't suck" vids say. I suspect many people who aren't happy with this particular pedal makes the following mistakes... 1) Turn the tone beyond the midway position ... thinking that they don't want the pedal to 'muffle' their tone and make their amp sound like it's buried under a pillow. 2) It's supposed to be a distortion pedal so they think "gimme all the gain!!!" and turn the distortion knob full blast. Turning the tone & distortion knobs 'way up' will make the DS-1 into the buzzy little bee hive that people then complain about and proclaim that this pedal is trash. Getting the most out of this pedal is all about turning the tone & distortion all the way down and then increasing them until you get the sweet spot for your particular guitar/amp combination. Your suggestion about setting the gain to where engaging the pedal gives you that little 'extra umpff' in volume is appropriate too.

I don't think ppl are wrong. I think it was ppls first distortion pedal. Im still learning to like it though. And i know as someone who just recently picked up guitar, the knobs and words are easy to understand along with the basic function. But putting that into practice is a whole other thing. I like od more than fuzz or distortion. But I'm really learning to like distortion too. There's a ton of harmonics in that pedal. A ton. Throw an sd1 or really a kind of tube screamer in front of it, and you keep the harmonics and lose the fizzle. The sd1 works well. i just learned it clips the lows . But I've also learned get the amp loud and eq good. Then, use your guitar knobs and the amount of tone you can get is pretty substantial. I can sound close enough to most tones i want here in the bedroom.

You should try the Joyo Sweet Baby pedal. I enjoy mine. Made in China.. OK whatever. I'm all about the USA but, best quality for the MONEY is where it's at, for me. Lol! I've owned two Boss DS1 pedals.. at different times. Sold them both. I liked them but, they'd served their purpose at the time but, not for life. Fulltone Plim Soul is my main pedal for said tones. And of course, the Joyo Sweet Baby when I need something more subtle. Peace.

I have one and haven't tried it yet. I also have a mojo Mojo I love. I think it sounded great with your SG. Better just a tad with the amp already overdriven, but still great with the clean amp. ♥️🤘♥️ I'm 61 and have been playing 45 years plus and I used to always use the amp for distortion back in the day if possible, but I also had a fender twin and a Peavey ranger that you had to use a distortion thru to get 80s tones and I used a rat which was great back then. I also use, or have used an SD1 which is great as a boost and wonder if you used a clean amp and then the ds1 for just a break up tone and pushed it with an SD1 if it would sound even better or a tube screamer by staking with it. I agree you must be at unity gain or louder. I like to go between 3db and 7db louder for oeads in case the FOH guy is hitting on a girl or falls asleep. 😂😂.. Good video sir. Just found you. Thanks. It’s been around forever for a reason. I’m not a big fan but I respect the DS-1. I’ve had a few over the years and what some don’t realize is that the circuit was changed around the early to mid 90’s due to some of the originally used parts becoming discontinued. As a result , any of the older DS-1s that have a black label or were made in Japan have a flatter eq and a little smoother distortion compared to the newer style circuit, with the newer circuit being a little raspier and more mid-scooped in comparison. It’s not a huge change (and the older ones barely reach unity gain, they are quieter than the new ones), but it does make the older circuit a little easier to get along with depending on your amp. I think a lot of the hate over the years might be chalked up to this being someone’s first pedal, possibly during a time when they were rocking a cheap, lousy sounding starter amp. Between the cheap amp and not knowing how to dial in sounds, it’s easy to conclude the pedal is the problem. Put a DS-1 in front of a quality amp and it’s a fine pedal, as you’ve capably demonstrated.

Honestly, the differences are really minimal and if you're not into a new DS1, a vintage one is not going to change that opinion, the Boss engineers did a great job keeping the circuits sounding more or less the same. If you're looking for more mids from a DS1, then a modified version will work better. There's also the OS2 and DS2, which take different approaches to more midrange compared to a DS1.

Ha i got one of these at a swap meat here in LA for 20 bucks never used one in the past with all the bad rap i heard on it suprise it sounds great in my marshalls i just keep the tone down a bit and the vol to and it sounds cool cheers j watt

Great pedal. I have to agree about using it on a dirty amp. If you use it by itself through say a blackface amp for drive it sounds very artificial. But....when you use it to slam the front end on an amp already compressing and driving, it sounds natural and very usable.

I discovered I like fuzz and transparent clean drives a lot more now… but DS1 has been on and off my board since I was a kid. It’s amazing if you know your amp.
