Another clingy, interfering, rude, dramatic, boundary-less, dictatorial mother figure scolding a 30-year-old man who is desperately, but respectfully, trying to clip the apron strings by which she keeps him tethered. He doesn't want marriage but she forces matchmaking dates for him and as an obedient son, he attends those to please his mother. He decides he wants marriage after all, most likely so he can stop the stupid games of attending matchmaker dates, but mother interferes, saying she won't allow it (she "prohibits" him from marrying the woman he wants to marry) so no matter what he does, he can't please her. Her bottom line is that she doesn't want him out of her clutches because she can emotionally manipulate him for her own benefit as long as he's living under her roof: marrying the attorney means he's marrying an intelligent, quick witted, calm, educated, professional career woman who is strong, courageous and steadfast: attributes the mother knows she, herself, does not possess: she doesn't dislike the attorney although she thinks she does, she's just envious that she's met her match in a much younger woman who wants her son, but momma wants to keep her son all for herself in some sick, twisted way. Just her behavior before getting into the car to go home, she's making him "promise" to return home for the evening meal. How many times does she ask him to make sure he's coming back to the homestead and not going to his own place? Then she solidifies the emotional blackmail by saying "I believe you" meaning if he changes his mind and doesn't go home to her and his father, he's not trustworthy and he lied to her. She then puts the icing on the blackmail cake by telling him she'll make all his favorite foods. Emotional manipulation yet again - bribing him. I'm so glad that when the truth came out at the dinner table, the father at least had common sense, a moral compass and a spine to speak up and show the mother what a shrew she's been with the entire situation. Notice how mother didn't return to the dinner table once father/son were sharing a drink. She didn't get her own way, her son stood his ground in that he's not returning to her nest whether he gets married or not, he finally set boundaries with his mother as he should have done before all this happened, and his father backed him up. Mother is sulking in another room because she couldn't bully father or son any longer on this issue.
