1 if you want the full experience, 3 if you want to play the classic masterpiece, 5 if you want the best game in the series

I could never get past the first phantom fight as a kid, maybe I should try it again. I always hear awful things about 2 but I never understood why. I totally get why the reboot got hate though.

I didn’t get the hate for 2 until I played it myself and got a few levels deep. At first it just feels repetitive but sort of harmless, but it begins to sink in what a disaster it is as you go

Yeah so I still kinda feel the same way about this game now than when I dropped it lol. It's marginally more fun when you know what you're doing, but you can still get fucked by the shitty lock on, shitty camera, lack of combat options, and some annoying ass enemies. The underwater sections are awful and the bosses overall are not that great either. I never really thought DMC as a series really prioritized their bosses but some of them are bafflingly bad, in this game specifically the best one is just inoffensive but done way WAY better in DMC5. Speaking of, my ranking is identical to the video lol 5) Mundus (top 5 worst final boss I ever fought. Inverted flight controls, unavoidable damage, boring if not infuriating, it's everything wrong about boss design. It's a miracle this game even spawned a series, I can't imagine anyone ever thought to themselves wow Mundus was awesome, more of that please!) 4) Nightmare (weird gimmick that I never would have fully understood if not for this video. I had moments where I would just keep taking damage and not have enough time to attack his spheres before they retract which pissed me off. The re-fights of past bosses is kinda annoying but they have pitiful health so at least it isn't a slog) 3) Griffon (with the grenade gun it's tolerable, I don't like that he is airborne almost the whole time but there isn't much bullshit here like with the previous two) 2) Phantom (the biggest strength of this game that hasn't aged is its more horror atmosphere, and Phantom is a big proponent of that. My first time playing, i didn't know jumping had s so I HATED every sequence where he's chasing you down a hallway, but it was a breeze coming back from the other games. Cool and inoffensive) 1) Nelo Angelo (inoffensive is the best thing I could say about it. It's cool though, it's just been completely dwarfed by Cavaliere Angelo in 5. You can parry Nelo Angelo just by mashing most of the time, but it's still a fun bout that is carried entirely by the story importance, and even then, only works when supplemented by the story of DMC3)

Also the most shocking thing these rankings could do would be to put the Savior in the middle because everyone either despises that fight or adores it with no in between.

Honestly despise Nightmare in this game, literally the most annoying thing I experienced in a video game. Also Griffon was what made me quit playing on hard mode. Good luck with DMC 2, don’t take it too seriously and upgrade your guns to max level. By the way, Alex, would the Valiant Gargoyles even fit on your lifeform chart?

I played about 2 hours of this game before dropping it. As my introduction to the series I thought it controlled terribly and was weirdly vague about, pretty much everything lol. It's aged terribly and I didn't even try the second game. But I skipped ahead to 3 and really started loving it. 4 is a step back but it still has great core gameplay (the Savior fight and that whole last hour of the game is one of the worst things I've ever experienced though). 5 is amazing and my crazy ass is actually on a warpath rn to try and get the plat trophy. I will lose many years off my already short life expectancy for doing it, but nothing makes sense anymore so fuck it. Maybe I just had the wrong expectations for the franchise, but now that I understand it a lot better than when I started, I'm thinking of going back to DMC1 and seeing if my feelings change. I'm sure I'll still have some difficulties with it but maybe I'll like it a lot better now that I know what I'm doing lol. Gonna miss style switching and the great Devil Arms from 3 and 5 though

1 takes a while to get used to for sure, Jack had the same experience but came back to it months after dropping it and ended up becoming better at the game than me
