At this point, I'm convinced the media talking heads only hyped mavs up because they know celtics is the most hated franchise and if they flat out all said celtics had it in the bag, many wouldn't tune into the finals except c's fans. Afterall, NBA ratings have been trash in the last how many years. Too easy for them to do since most of them already have their own personal biases against the celtics.

The NBA and NBA media humiliated themselves. They cherry-picked and created metrics like this whole 'hardest path by opponent win totals' while completely ignoring the fact that by established metrics this was an elite Celtics squad. They talked about how the Mavs had this elite offensive back court that was going to destroy the Celtics while refusing to mention that, per NBA players, Jrue is the best on-ball defender in the NBA and Derrick White is also elite and that, unlike the Celtics, the Mavs are heavily reliant on their two stars to initiate basically everything on the offensive end. I even heard someone talk about how the Celtics lacked reliable depth...as if the Mavs have a plethora of reliable talent to turn to on the bench (no offense to the Mavs, but their #3, 4, and 5 just can't compare to Porzingis, White and Jrue). I will say that the early season doubt was fair because of the recent Celtics' history. I think some of the criticism from a couple years ago (pre-Finals run) of the Jays is also fair. In the post-Kyrie seasons there was a legitimate question about whether JT/JB could figure it out together. Boston gambled that they could and they were right. The Jays did figure it out and they did learn to play off each other and that's been huge. Also, I said four years ago that if Tatum could take a step forward as a playmaker, the sky would be the limit for Boston and this was arguably his best season initiating offense.

Yes. If you wanna get lost in the weeds the Celtics technically only have 5. The two teams swapped rosters and some trades resulted that became the 1979 Draft pick of Larry Bird and sent Cedrick Maxwell to the Celtics. So technically the clippers own rights to 13/18 Boston championships. This all happened under Red Aurbachs nose without his knowledge.
