Following the Second World War, many concentration camps such as Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz were liberated. Those men who liberated the camps of the Holocaust would discover the true horrors of the Nazi Regime and Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. After World War 2 was over in Europe, the Allies sought to hold those criminals responsible for their crimes against humanity. At the Nuremberg Trials, a number of defendants including Hermann Goring, Rudolf Hess and Joachim von Ribbentrop were placed on trial.
After the verdicts, 11 men including Goring were sentenced to death and were to be executed. The US Army would perform the Nuremberg executions inside the gymnasium of Nuremberg prison, and the execution would be John C Woods. Woods has attracted much criticism over the decades and the executions did not go as planned. Many of the executions took a long time to occur, for example Wilhelm Keitel's took almost 30 minutes. Another issue was that when the condemned fell, their heads were hit by the trapdoor causing further injury.
The executions of the Nuremberg Trial although botched were justice for many after the Second World War. Those remaining members of the Nazi hierarchy were placed on trial for their crimes and then met their fate at the hangman's noose. The condemned were; Hermann Goring (who would escape execution) Joachim von Ribbentrop, Wilhelm Keitel, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Alfred Rosenberg, Hans Frank, Wilhelm Frick, Julius Streicher, Fritz Sauckel, Alfred Jodl and Arthur Seyss-Inquart.
So join us today as we look at 'The BOTCHED Executions Of The Nuremberg Trials.'

Pierrepoint was a perfectionist and prided himself on the fact that no one hanged by him was alive after 15 seconds. The people in charge were aware of this and chose to put a novice in charge of the executions hoping he would make these men suffer before they died. For many survivors and the family's of the dead these men died too quickly.

Having hanged several US soldiers at the US military jail in Shepton Mallet. The Americans who were in charge of the Nuremberg executions were well aware of his professionalism. His services were offered, but declined in favour of someone who had never hanged anyone. Make up your own mind.

The Russians wanted a short drop to cause maximum suffering. The British wanted their long variable drop for instant death. The compromise was the American standard 5ft drop with a normal rope which could be instant death or could cause much suffering depending on neck strength and were the rope was placed

Pierrepoint was also a professional and not a sadist. it sounds as if Woods was. Looking at his picture, he is missing a few screws. But sadist or merely incompetent, the hangings were unforgivably botched. If I had to die by hanging and had my choice of executioner, I would take Pierrepoint.

This is not accurate. He lied about being an executioner he never made it that far. He was present for an execution in Texas when the state was introduced to Ole Sparky they decided to "Fry em over high em" which in Texas meant they were going to put the criminal to the electric chair instead of hanging him. Apparently the case was famous and because he was in the picture the military took at face value he was an executioner.

We (the more civlized people) see the problem head on, criminals. Mere humans with twisted idealogies. They're nothing more special than that to be in their own categories. Just like how a small child messing up and we as the parents look down on them in disappointment. If you really wanted to label anyone as subhumans, it would be the japanese. They were as tribal as it gets. Slaughtering and eating people with their own hands like ancient humans and in a way animals. Revering a leader (mere human) as a God is beyond 20st century. Sorry not sorry, but the nazis were too "civlized" and throughoutly planned to be realistically called a "subhuman". It's just your immature mental capacity projecting your hatred onto a obvious evil-intended activists organization. I get your intent clearly. Though it's time to face things head on as they are. Labeling around as if it's the 1600s is too narrow minded considering our advanced education.

@@denny414 Well that's a fucking reach. I'm not "simping" for Nazis. I'm saying that you should never aim to be as evil as they are. Taking pleasure in a horrific death of an enemy 100% leads a soul to not mind committing atrocities. There's a reason why chemical warfare is banned from war; the agonizingly slow and painful death chemical gas can cause is seen as inhumane to all nations. To take pleasure in subjecting someone to that type of death no matter what that person has done, shows a degree of darkness equivalent to the Nazi's themselves. I'm not saying I wouldn't have killed them. But it doesn't fill me with glee to think of anyone choking to death for 20 minutes. That is just a dark, dark thing to pleased about, no matter what.

But, after studying Pierrepoint and the "British Method" a bit, I think the Brits had it all figured out with their noose, waxing the rope, the drop, etc. In America, I think most hanging were "hit or miss" on whether the condemned's neck was broken in the drop.

That's an ignorant statement. For starters, the entire German public cared, and the Soviets used it to inflame hostilities against the West even more to claim more of Germany for the Communist East. The Allies had already lost the German public's support by prioritizing these long, drawn-out two year long trials instead of rebuilding the state infrastructure and clearing farmland to feed a starving nation. The German public ended up siding with the Soviet punishment of shooting them the way military executions are supposed to be done instead of milking Nuremberg for more PR the way the Allies did. Then when you add this shameless effort to further humiliate Germany by disfiguring the remains of the only previous administration the public knew, you risked losing your "bulwark against Communism" to being absorbed by the Soviet Union. Because these are no longer men at this point who are at Nuremberg. These are public officials. These are symbols of the German nation itself.

This guy is no hero. He didn't differentiate between friend and foe. He was a sadist who became an executioner because he was too afraid of combat. *Don't forget that this piece of shit killed waaaaay more Allied soldiers with botched executions during his service than he ever did Nazis.* He eagerly subjected American, British, and Canadian soldiers to the most horrific deaths just to feed his own sadism. He was unqualified for the job, and he lied to get it because he was too afraid of possibly losing his own life in combat, and he needed to feed his compulsion to torture. This man was a cowardly, abusive sadist with no redeeming qualities who was no different from the Nazis he killed at Nuremberg.

Yes, Pierrepoint took his job very seriously and really got his work down to a fine art. The 2005 biopic "Pierrepoint" starring Timothy Spall is a truly excellent film, btw. It's well-researched, sober, with great period detail, and Spall nails the role of Pierrepoint with the same precision that Pierrepoint nailed his own job.

It´s not about whether the condemned deserved a painful end. It is about whether the judging nations and people want to position themselves on the same level of cruelty and inhumanity as the condemned and have the executions being tainted by the methods they use. The whole purpose of the Nuremberg trials was to show that these people were criminals and were held responsible by a fair trial and thus establish an example for the future instead of simply taking revenge or do some victor´s justice. This target would of course be counteracted by purposefully botched execution methods to torture the condemned. When you sit in judgement on monsters you shoulld be careful that your own methods are unchallengeable.

Thank you so much for sharing with me an infamous fragment of the Hitler's Nazi horrendous regimen, via this document. It must be a very sad odyssey to recount it. The crimes and cruelties committed against my sons and daughters, my fathers and mothers, my brothers and sisters hurt me deeply, regardless their ethnicity and nationality. In Isaiah 2: 4, Jehovah God, the Creator and Source of life, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, promises: "He will be judge among the nations and will settle matters in relation to many peoples. They will turn their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. The nations will no longer raise their swords against each other and learn no more to wage war." My immediate neighbors are Jews and I am a Jehovah's Witness. Their hearts are superior than pure gold by far. They are extremely kind. The gentleman takes care of my trash can every Wednesday without my asking him to do so. They are lovely human beings, and they are not in need of the smallest improvement.
