I remember it well living close by at the time, watching those cars swinging over the edge of the broken Bridge. My husband was working on the East side, and had to travel on ferries over for some time daily. It was also around the time the Mount St Canice laundry blew up. All tragic, but I have many wonderful memories of Hobart and Tassie.

Hey this is a terrific bit of our city's history - thanks for posting! Unfortunately the Bowen Bridge commemorative plaque unveiled by PM Bob Hawke at 0:40 has been defaced by graffiti and is in a poor state of repair. The bridge itself is a level span that is easy to drive or cycle across, but is still somewhat under-utilised when compared with the rebuilt Tasman Bridge further downstream, which is the busiest stretch of road in the whole State.

Ahh the Bowen Bridge. Named after my great, great, great, great, great, great, great uncle, John Bowen. I'm so grateful to be related to someone who marked a time in history. His telescope sits proudly in the library at my place.

At 2m13s you can see the temporary bridge, in front of Qantas (access from the steps to the north of the Western side of the bridge next to Bob's plaque and go under towards Incat) there is still some evidence.

With the Derwent's pollution levels, the workers on this project are probably not alive today.
