The bowler who broke the PBA Cheetah pattern | PBA Bowling Rewind

The World Series of Bowling has brought us countless classic moments. But perhaps one of the most dominant performances came in the 2nd edition of the event back in 2010.
This bowler caught fire and posted a ridiculous scoring record on the Cheetah pattern. In this video we look at how he did it and his journey to the TV finals.

Eugene is from about an hour away from me. Bowled against him in lots of little local tournaments. Coached my daughter in countless youth tournaments against his son. He's a really nice guy. Yes the hard up the boards is his bread and butter but don't fool yourself. He can move 40 left and slow hook the lane with the best of them. His versatility is actually a sight to be seen.

@@ericpadilla2454 Watch some of the PBA50 tournaments he has done recently, he really does hook the lane. I've seen him in some of the 90s tournaments he has competed in - he was actually really really good, he wouldn't have qualified 1st or 2nd in so many championship rounds otherwise...but he (back then) got inside his own head. Nelson (Bo) Burton talked about that specific achille's heel on air in one of the tournaments I watched. I would link it, but I don't know which it was - so you will have to take my word for it...or look for it on your own.

@@844spyder He's right. If Eugene could hook it "with the best of them" then he'd have more titles. He has 3 PBA titles. 2 of them (2010 and 2011) were on the Cheetah pattern throwing it hard up the right. His only other title was back in 2002 hurling it... you guessed it... hard up the right. It's the only thing he was really good at.

Yeah, I was just gonna ask this. Didn't he just win some tournament in the last year? And he's still in his 20s right? He's pretty good. Kevin right? Looks like he's got 2 titles so far and 1 major, I guess. Not bad for 23. I like how he has a simple philosophy in interviews of try to hit the pocket or try to throw strikes or try to win. He pretty much says what I would say in interviews LMAO. I would just say I would try to throw as many strikes as possible and listen to my coach.

Each McCune family member had achieve something for the first time in there family tree, like don McCune became player of the year in 1973 but never succeeded nothing after that, Eugene winning 3 titles not much but in 2002 he defeated 2 of the greatest bowlers of all time just to dominate the cheatah breaking a world record, and now Kevin McCune had become the first ever to win a major in his entire family tree, something is father or his father never did, it's crazy what these McCune's have achieve in there career.

Nice to see Rocket get some love. He will go down in history as someone who won't be remembered too much (opposed to the greats like WRWjr, Webers, Belmonte, etc...) but anyone, and I mean ANYONE who followed bowling closely knew how Rocket could play anywhere, any time. He definitely left a mark in my memory and he's a gem for the sport of bowling.

Back when I was about 35, I shot a 1327 for a 5-Game Set. it was in a men's trios tournament in WA State.

I shot the house record 846, and followed it up with 807 next week in sweeper for a pretty wild 1653 for 6. This was on a house shot of course. I felt bad for my friend who shot 783 and no one cared about him at all. 1135 for 4 during this, as I shot 289 after my 846 I also had a crazy stretch of 52 games in league where I averaged 242 at Dublin bowl. It was an unsanctioned singles league and I never had to adjust for the first 25 or so frames each week. I shot 780 in the first week and had a 260 average after 3 games, and it went down very slowly from there as I kept shooting 700s. My low series after 8 weeks was 686

I met Eugene McCune at my local lanes a little over 30 years ago. I was probably 15 or 16 at the time. My friends and I had never met a professional bowler before. He was quiet, but nice enough to give us an autograph. Doug Kent was with him. We didn't really know who Doug was at that time.

This is also my favorite line. Hard and straight down the 3 or 4 board. I used to have quite high scores doing this with a Columbia Freeze ball on the Abbey Road oil pattern. Even on bad days I got good scores. If you miss right, you hit the 1 board with no oil, and it recovers and strikes. If you miss a 1 or 2 boards left it's a Brooklyn. Good times 😅
