Vienna, 1939.
Nazi police seize Gustav Kleinmann, a Jewish upholsterer and his son, Fritz, and send the pair to Buchenwald in Germany. There began an unimaginable ordeal that saw the pair beaten, starved and forced to build the very concentration camp they were held in.
When Gustav was set to be transferred to Auschwitz, a certain death sentence, his son refused to leave his side. Throughout the horrors they witnessed and the suffering they endured, there was one constant that kept them alive: the love between father and son.
Based on Gustav's secret diary and meticulous archive research, this book tells their incredible story for the first time - a story of courage and survival unparalleled in the history of the Holocaust.
The Boy Who Followed His Father into Auschwitz is a reminder of both the best and the worst of humanity, the strength of family ties, and the power of the human spirit.

I have read this book recently and still could not get over the horrific, mind boggling, out-of-this-world kind of details! Definitely, one of the best books I have ever read -- and I have read many. I have shared the bits and pieces of the story with many of my friends. This book shows, one more time, how human beings could be even more savage than beasts of a jungle when they don't have what it takes to be a good and decent human being ... characteristics like conscience, compassion, justice, caring, helping others, love for humankind without any kind of prejudice...

“He could neither see it nor smell it, but Gustav knew the landscape through which he guessed they were passing now: the fields, the green distant hills and mountains, the quaint little villages. He had grown up here, bled for his country here, and now the rail tracks were bringing home back one last time, to die here”

I just finished this book which literally takes you through the horrible journey that Gustav & Fritz Kleinmann suffered from the Nazi terror- to put it as best I can.It is hard to express how shocking this family and others were treated. This book needs to be read by everyone. Also very well written- I could not put it down...yet-at the same time -it was very difficult to read...unbelievable the depths of depravity in Hitler’s monstrous regime.Should be must reading in high schools and college courses

Thank you Jeremy, I have watched many youtube vids on this subject and this is the first book on it I have read . What an absolute eye opener and so hard to read, but we must . I had to put it down a few times as it is so well written that the emotions became overwhelming. I cannot pretend to imagine what life was like for those survivers or of the mindset of the perpetrators. It is unimaginable how factions are trying to erase this from history . It must never be forgotten for the risk of repeating .

Finished reading this on my lunch break today. It's a book I won't forget for a long time. Absolutely incredible work detailing one of the most horrifying episodes in human history. Jeremy Dronfield says he felt a responsibility to do the story justice and I think he can rest easy knowing that was a achieved. Arguably the best book I've ever read and there's been many

Such a beautiful book, such a sad time in human history. Poor Kurt, I believe he cannot remember the parting from his mother and sister because as a young child it was simply too traumatic. The brain has ways of protecting us and I think it shut that out and purged the memory so that Kurt would be able to go on to a new life. Blessings to all who had to live through such a horrible ordeal. I cry for his dear mother. Jeremy really captured her desperation. I truly felt it. Thank you for writing this book. It’s October 2021, I recently picked this up at Books-A-Million in Merritt Island Florida. I will definitely recommend it to everyone!

Can someone explain in the book who the narrator named Ben was supposed to be. The various points of view changes from Gustav to Ima or the mom and the older brother but sometimes it says Ben and during those sections, it was about Kurt some of the times.

What the Kleinmann family went through is horrifying and heartbreaking. Period. 😰😢💔 But when u fudge many things in the book, it disrespects the true story of what they went through imo. It also gives Holocaust deniers ammo. I mean there’s no record of Fritz’s death?? Not even in his own father’s diary?? And the fabulous scene in the bath house was entirely made up cuz the author doesn’t know “exactly when Gustav found out his son was actually alive”?? Hmmm. So for me the rest of the book could be in question I would give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️
