I laughed and cried at the shot of the surviving crewmen tossing Bob Moch in the water at one of their reunions. What a tremendous fellowship they had. I attended the UW and while I never participated in Crew, I had several fraternity brothers that did. My roommate was a lightweight oarsman, and I remember him coming quietly into our room at 4:30 in the morning in January to go down to the shell house and row that huge barge (Old Nero?) in the cold and fog of Lake Washington. We also had two coxswains for the lightweight men's shells, one of which was about 5'1" and build like a fireplug. He rode a 'hot wheels' style bike to class which caused us to call him the "paper boy". My mother was at the UW when these men won the Olympic gold, and while I do not recall her ever talking about any of the crewmembers, she did tell me how frequently she and her friends would go to watch the Class Day races that where held (at least when I was there) on the opening day of boating season on Lake Washington. She too is long gone, otherwise I would ask her many questions about those days.

Awesome story. Thanks for sharing, jgrahmanii. Though I am not an alum, I have been a huge fan of UW since 1982. In the movie, they sing the UW song. Needless to say, I had a hard time holding it in. Love the story, love UW. GO DAWGS!

I loved the movie and I am glad to know and honor them many years later. God Bless the Spirit of the American people. They were rightly called the Great Generation.

Clooney completely missed the etiology of Joe's struggles/courage....he could have at least shown Joe's parents driving away during the depression and leaving Joe to fend for himself.
