The Rugby Championship trophy could well be heading back on the plane to South Africa on Sunday. But COULD Argentina spring a surprise and beat thew World Champions and keep the championship alive for another week?

No matter the result the Pumas will give hard work to the world champions ! Great respect for South African rugby not only for their game but because it has helped Argentina's rugby development for a very long time, since 1965 when Argentina rugby union toured South Africa. And, we are grateful for their help and open hart welcoming many times in their country. Vamos Pumas :)

Thanks mate, I agree, helping Argentinian rugby has been on the South African agenda for 60 years. We love you guys and want you to be great. Have consistently toured there for the last 30 years when no one else cared to show up ❤.

Had the privilege to go on a rugby tour to Argentina and Chile while at school in RSA, and as a Namibian I can say you are spot on with the Braai brothers, the love of meat runs deep, but also the respect for forward play.. with the argentine scrum and the RSA bash it up front mentality.. also the hospitality we received, sounds a lot like what you got in RSA.. and they drink Fernet and coke, like the saffas drink brandy and coke😉😂😂

There’s a lot of history between Bokke and Pumas, in fact the Pumas nickname is the result of an error made by a journalist in South Africa.

Please elaborate on where the Pumas got their name, I remember there was an issue with their name somehow.

@@groenrizla2513 The story behind this goes back to 1965 when the Argentine rugby team was on tour in South Africa. A South African journalist mistakenly referred to the animal depicted on the Argentine team’s emblem as a "puma" instead of a jaguar. Despite the error, the name stuck, and ever since, Argentina's rugby team has been referred to as "Los Pumas."
@RubenRodriguez-wi5ys3 сағат бұрын
@@groenrizla2513 The original animal design on the Pumas shirt it is really a Yaguarete (it is a Jaguar and the only living member of the genus Panthera native of the Americas). At the time of the first tour it was difficult to explain to the South Africans that the animal was a Yaguarete so the journalist began calingl the shirt design a Puma (also a living animal in Argentina) and so it went as we were named by our friends in South Africa as the Pumas rugby team from Argentina.:)
@kjlovescoffee3 сағат бұрын
@@groenrizla2513 From wikipedia: The Pumas nickname is the result of an error made by Carl Kohler, a journalist for the then Die Transvaler newspaper in South Africa, while following the team during their first overseas tour ever - to Southern Africa (to Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and South Africa) in 1965. He tried to devise a catchy nickname for the team similar to existing international team nicknames such as All Blacks, Springboks, and Wallabies. He asked Isak van Heerden, the then coach of the Natal Rugby team who was asked by the SARB to assist with the tour, for ideas. They saw a picture of a type of lion with spots on the UAR crest. Kohler was aware that the Americas had jaguars and pumas, and as he was under pressure to submit his article, made a guess and called them the Pumas, instead of the actual jaguar. The mistake stuck, and was eventually adopted by the Argentines themselves (although the UAR crest continued to depict a jaguar until 2023). Players of Los Pumas and a grenadier posing with the away uniform for the 2023 World Cup In April 2023, the UAR launched its new visual identity that included a change of emblems not only of the body but of the national teams, from senior to 7s and youth representatives. The process included the substitution of the characteristic jaguar figure with the puma, used as a namesake for the team since the 1965 tour in Rhodesia and South Africa. That same year the UAR released the Pumas' away kit inspired by the uniform of the Mounted Grenadiers Regiment, the Argentine military unit and presidential honour guard established in 1812. The away kit will be worn at the 2023 Rugby World Cup

@RubenRodriguez-wi5ys Very interesting and soo similar to how the white rhino got it's name. Wyd in Afrikaans means wide and sounds a bit like white in English so instead of wyd lip (as they have a wide lip for grazing) the English thought it meant white and so it became the white rhino instead of wide lip rhino. Is that not a fair comparison?

A bit of history. Agustin Creevy started his career for the Pampas XV that played in the Vodacom Cup in South Africa. Vodacom cup was a tier 2 comp that took place at the same time as Super Rugby.

South Africa's number 6 & 7 in the pecking order lock pairing, still makes the combined sheet ahead of Argentina's two. It's almost criminal that the Boks are juggling and rotating eight world class locks, mainly due to injuries.

Yeah, I think the two natioms really like each other. And if I have to pick a nation to lose to, it would be Argentina in a heartbeat. I suppose it can be argued that as Argentina continues to build their depth and occupy the higher rankings for longer periods, then there will be those test matches that ends in bad blood through a bad ref call or a disallowed try. After that Im sure there will be some ill feelings if the one side feels that they were cheated. Its just natural, methinks. But for now? Absolutely love Los Pumas and they are firmly my #2 team.

The rugby rivalry between South Africa and Argentina dates back to the 1960s, with the first major encounter happening during Argentina’s 1965 tour of South Africa. This tour was a pivotal moment in Argentine rugby history, as it was during this tour that the team earned their nickname, "Los Pumas." A South African journalist mistook the jaguar on the Argentine emblem for a puma, and the name stuck.
@jacquie2123 сағат бұрын
Only other country where Afrikaans is still spoken. Los pumas was bestowed by South African media (mistaking the jaguar for a puma) when Argentina went on their first ever tour to Southern Africa, and saru backed pichot, and both feel aggrieved by the way they get treated by the NH and probably NZ and ARU. On the field tho, not sure they like each other much.. off the field must be great craic

Whilst New Zealand is our greatest rival, the English the team we want to annihilate whenever we can, the Argies are our brothers in arms. We love them and have always tried our best to help them along as far back as the early 1980s. I guess our best mates in rugby (not that we have any mates in rugby 🙈).

I can see Argentina unfortunately, crumbling a bit in the 2nd half the way Australia did against them.
@neillbarnard1072Сағат бұрын
Actually Argentina does not need a bonus point. What everyone is missing, is that Argentina only needs to win both games by 10 points or more, and deny SA a bonus point. If they get 8 log points in 2 games, and score 20 points overall more than SA they will be rugby championship winners, by ending on equal on log points and ahead on points difference
@JahnBeukesMusic3 сағат бұрын
Hey Tim. I can promise you that no-one down here in SA is taking this game lightly. This Puma side is as unpredictable as the French used to be. Seems to be a reasonable starting 15 for the Boks, but this is no time to mess about. I am not convinced by Moerat yet, he seems to become a bit "invisible" in his role sometimes, but I'm no Rassie, so good luck to Salmaan. Either way, Bok forever, and by 15.
