Yeeesh, the lyrics to the theme are horrible! Shame on whoever made Florence Henderson sing them! Ironically, The Bradys failed on Friday Nights at 8PM, the time slot in which The Brady Bunch thrived in the 70s...well, not quite thrived. The show never broke the Top 30 in the Nielsen ratings, got its butt handed to it by Sanford and Son, the number 2 show in all of television at the time and the show that followed it on Friday nights, The Partridge Family, was actually more popular. I only saw one episode of The Bradys...the one Marcia became an alcoholic and was clean and sober by the end of the episode. Ughhhhh.

Maureen McCormick apparently also didn't participate in "The Bradys" because because she had recently had a baby and wasn't ready to go back to work. If you've ever seen the cast-members reunite on the NBC sitcom "Day by Day" back in 1989 (which incidentally, co-starred Christopher Daniel Barnes, who would go on to play Greg Brady in the two feature films from the '90s), Maureen was noticeably pregnant. For what it's worth, Barry Williams wrote in his book "Growing Up Brady" that the real reason why Maureen wasn't involved with "The Bradys" because at the time, she was just over the show Brady Bunch thing and just wanted to move on with her life and career.
@TMC1982Part2
@TMC1982Part2 Жыл бұрын
@JD Woodward Also, if I have my facts straight, Maureen was uncomfortable with the idea of having Marcia become an alcoholic given that she in real life, had struggled with substance abuse. If I remember correctly, Maureen was having issues as far back as The Brady Brides at the start of the '80s.

I recently watched Atomic Abe Productions' video entitled "The Brady Bunch Spin-Offs: Why They Failed". And the whole story about Susan Olsen not being in "A Very Brady Christmas" due to her being on her honeymoon was apparently, a cover for what "really" happened. Susan allegedly, bowed out due to a disagreement over her pay. She didn't like the fact that Maureen McCormick and Eve Plumb were going to be paid substantially more than she was considering that Maureen and Eve had previously co-starred in "The Brady Brides".

You left out one of the craziest things. The show was failing and I guess to try and make it more like the original show they added a laugh track. A laugh track on a serious drama with no real jokes. You can hear it in some of the clips in your video. So you get scenes like alcoholic Marcia stealing booze from her dad's liquor cabinet. Her mom walks in unexpectedly and Marcia hides the liquor bottle behind her back. Then mom says, "Marcia, what's behind your back?" BIG LAUGH. !?!?! What? That's not funny! She's an alcoholic!!!

Barry Williams talks at length about The Bradys in his book "Growing Up Brady." I believe he suggested that what ultimately lead to the show's demise was too many characters to keep track of. The original Bunch was about a mom, dad, six kids, and the housekeeper (and for a time, the family dog). Now you've got the kids all grown up with spouses, significant others, and, in some cases, kids of their own. The tic-tac-toe board in the opening needed to be expanded. And, of course, Robert Reed butted heads with the Schwartzes like in the good old days. They were really pissed when Reed went directly to CBS executives with his complaints about the direction of the show.

We were immediately put off the show. Characters need to have problems, especially in a drama, but I don't know...couldn't the characters have different problems? Let's face it -- the only Brady spin-offs that worked were the 2 feature films that debuted in theaters! The rest of it is shit including the third film (TV movie or direct to video?) they did in the 1990s with the theatrical cast. Still, The Bradys have done better than other Sherwood Schwartz's last big hit, Gilligan's Island. GI has never been successfully revived; the reunion TV movies were terrible and the reality show is rotting in a film vault somewhere.

There was one extremely cringe-y moment that I remember from the original 6-ep run of “The Bradys” (that I think even got cut of the syndicated version, deservedly so.) I remember in 1990 borrowing a friend’s TV on Friday nights, just so I could see all 6 episodes of “The Bradys” in its original network run. Yes, I was a diehard fan too of anything Brady. Sherwood Schwartz advised CBS *not* to schedule the new series before 9pm(et), because of the "adult" storylines featured. Unfortunately, CBS wasn't doing too well at 8pm(et) on Fridays in the 1989-'90 season, and wanted to bring back memories of the original series being on Fridays at 8 to viewers. So, it appeared at 8pm.....and they got what they deserved.

It was still going to fail. First the concept was not going to be believable going from a sitcom to drama, second, it appeared that Sherwood Schwartz was behind the curve on the shows he put out. For example, the Brady Bunch was a failure compared to the Norman Lear and MTM sitcoms that aired in the same generation with. His two shows succeeded in syndication on the UHF channels to the after-school kids crowd.

Dallas also switched timeslot too at one point to make room for the short lived Over My Dead Body, which was basically CBS sucking up to Edward Woodward and Universal for cancelling The Equalizer, and an attempt by CBS and Universal to clone the success of Murder She Wrote. Poor Edward was in interviews trying to point out Over My Dead Body wasn't a MSW clone, then CBS and Universal go and cast Jessica Lundy, providing more snickering given Angela Lansbury's character.

Something the networks never understood. The success of theBrady Bunch came in the syndicated reruns. It was kids watching kids they’re own age. Wether they were teenagers, or still awkward preteens we related to them. It didn’t work so much seeing the kids as adults. It also made no sense to have them go back to they’re parents. It might have made more sense seeing them raise they’re own kids remenicing about they’re own childhood, and even that would have A short shelf life.

The original Brady Bunch series was a somewhat corny and campy, but otherwise clean and wholesome family sitcom with good morals. Audiences simply put, didn't want or expect a "darker and edgier" Brady Bunch, where the problems aren't neatly solved at the end of the episode.

It started with The Brady Girls get married and continued with this series. Every show does not need a doctor or lawyer. Greg was the only kid to be old enough in the original series to show career interests. He loved music. Hecwas never going to be a successful performer, but he should have been shown as a music producer. If the show had been successful there would be stories in the ups and downs of musical taste. There could be references to Johnny Bravo and the Banana Convention.

Great work as always Pab. I watched part of the Brady 500 movie/first episode it was laughably bad but I couldn’t finish it lol. That theme song sung by Florence also hilarious but grating. Seeing the success of the Conners today and Fuller House lasting 5 seasons, kind of makes you wonder, if a Brady sequel series could have lasted a few seasons in this decade instead of the 80s/90s? Obviously pretty impossible now but Conners has survived despite Roseanne being gone and Michelle never being in Fuller House because Olson Twins never wanted part of it. I could easily see “The Bradys” having the story of Mike Brady actually dying if it was able to happen in this decade lol

That whole house moving was a really selfish solution by the Bradies! I mean what about all the other people in their old neighbourhood who can't afford to move their houses and are going to lose their homes? At first the Bradies were going to help their neighbours too, but as soon as an easier solution for their personal problem presented itself all the other people in the neighbourhood were suddenly irrelevant.

CBS is pathetic. Who are they trying to kid? As for this show, it somehow managed to be an even worse idea than the variety show... and that's saying something. I remember TV Guide absolutely raking CBS over the coals for turning Marcia into a drunk.

I remember watching A Very Brady Christmas a few days before Christmas in 1989 with my parents as I was a fan of the show. I enjoyed it. And I remember I was thrilled when I found out that CBS was bringing back The Bradys. Boy, did my thrill turn to utter disappointment. I thought that it would be a comedy and similar to the original. But I was bummed when I watched the first episode and found it was a Dramedy and was put off at the darker storylines that this show had over the lighter and funnier ones that I enjoyed on the Brady Bunch. Besides the darker tone, there is another thing that killed the show. It competed with Full House and Family Matters on ABC. No way that The Bradys was going to last in that time slot. And thank God that it didn't last.

I was just little too old to be one of those who fantasized about being in the bunch. I met a woman 12 years my younger who told me she had as a child. Then I began seeing online sources that described that phenomenon as widespread for a whole generation.

I get such a kick out of how, like with the variety show, they felt they had to show images of the kids in their younger years during the opening credits - as if we might not know who they are. Not to mention, it made fake Marcia and fake Jan's photos stand out like a sore thumb, since seeing childhood pics of people we didn't know just shone a bright light on the fact that it wasn't the original actors.

I watched one episode of this when Urkel was in reruns. My father watched Dallas anyway. BTW Dallas was not exactly a picnic in this era either. This episode felt a little more vicious. Was this because of the copyright crap? Or just the hatefulness of this show. The Brady Brides, the movies and even the Variety Show felt true to the spirit of the original
