Dr. Hilary Blumberg of Yale University School of Medicine presented "The Brain Circuitry of Bipolar Disorder: A View from Brain Scanning Research" at the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation International Mental Health Research Symposium in 2017. Dr. Blumberg received the 2017 Foundation Colvin Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Mood Disorders Research.

This is somewhat hopeful for finding bio markers for diagnosis. I wish the symptoms (what are referred as behaviors and moods) were described as brain symptoms. There is so much emphasis on moods being someone’s choice in general or because something happened in their life. Bipolar “moods” are not a choice but most of the general public doesn’t get that. Behavioral implies it’s a persons choice or flaw and not the result of an organ in their body not working properly. There has to be a better way to talk about the symptoms.

I have Bipolar Disorder and I am an electrical engineer. I refer to my behavioral disruptions as signal to noise(SNR) errors corrupting sensory perceptions (sound, visual, touch, integration , etc) or corrupting thought processing if I am alone in my thoughts. These errors cause inappropriate behavioral responses. It bows to the higher energy I feel throughout my body when manic. I believe these are higher energy levels in the calcium ion transport.

Thank you so much! Being diagnosed with bipolar disorder myself, it is extremely helpful to have this kind of research and information to try and make sense of it. I have had helpful treatment which I am grateful for, but it’s so much easier to accept the diagnosis with more physical evidence like this lady discusses.

There is no clinical test for bipolar. It's all based on symptoms and an interview with a psychiatrist. Scientists hope one day we will have a brain scan or some other test to make diagnosis more absolute.

I read that injury sustained during birth, particularly when forceps are used, could also cause bipolar and even schizophrenia.

So many connections here. The brain develops down up inside out. I wonder if the amygdala being heighten is specific to genetics. Considering, it is fully developed at birth. However, your prefrontal cortex would be one of the last things to develop and your environment would largely affect that. Not to mention, it's not fully developed until age 25.

As a M.H clinician of 45 years in psychosis , i have heard and witnessed thousands of delusions ,they all sound like the person is in a dream like /nightmare state .What if psychosis is where the dream switch does not swith off correctly ?

I believe that Bipolar, like any other defects, can be caused by in vitro if the mother has experienced extreme stress or trauma, alcohol, drugs etc. To me it makes sense that if Down’s syndrome, spina bifida, an in vitro baby could equally be affected regarding brain functioning and chemical make up. I believe the same with children with Adhd, particularly if there are no symptoms or family history. It is definitely caused by something other than just genetical. My other thoughts are that if DID, BPD and other mental illnesses, if as a child the person has experienced trauma, it also could cause a rewiring of the brain and brain development. If as a child you can create alters to help the child cope with the trauma they are experiencing, during that period similar trauma could also affect a child’s brain development.

No because bpd is a personality disorder and bipolar is not, it is a mood disorder and functions very differently. It's not usually caused by trauma.

@@bonniegomez5333 actually I suggest you research peer reviewed journals on the matter and you will find a lot of evidence I am correct. I also never mentioned BPD. Not everything is based on genetics and a lot more evidence has been found that trauma suffered by the mother can create similar neurological changes in vitro to the baby, if not more so since the brain is literally developing, as trauma induced neurological changes outside vitro.

I think you may need a therapist because you absolutely mentioned bpd, you may need to reread.

None of this really matters or will ever help because the stigma associated with bipolar is so deep in our society that people cannot ever rise above it, EVEN IF CURED. Even if you manage to learn how to thrive (despite this disease,) you’ll still be knocked back down by family and “friends” who find out. They will insist on stigmatizing you, simply because of the label, WHICH U WILL NEVER LIVE DOWN. This is the main reason people choose suicide. Ask any handicapped person what is harder: Living with the illness, or coping with the people around them who treat them like lepers? And don’t fool yourself that lithium is the answer. It dulls the personality, makes you fat, and basically flat lines your emotions. You become a shadow of who you were. This is why most people don’t want to take it. And it doesn’t work at all for about 50% of the people. There are worse things than taking yourself out of the world. Living a life of ridicule and being ostracized by family and “friends” is a fate worse than death. At least on the other side, you will emerge disease-free, in a beautiful realm where you are accepted and loved. This life is just a blip on the souls journey and soon we will all be together anyway. None of the letters after your name or the money in your bank account will matter at that point. All that will matter is what was true, how you treated others, including the “least” of these, and how much you loved. I know my conscience is clear.
