Now this was a very interesting watch! Of course, there are a few things I loved that I'd like to make of note: -I always loved that the drumline was meant to imitate the beat of Linus' exhaust. And the specially made recordings for Linus' whistle is a nice addition! -Von Kapital speaking in drums is always a highlight, and the rhythmic clanking of Samson's rods at 2:00 is absolutely immaculate. I also wanted to note that before now, I had no idea Samson's bell wasn't actually part of the soundtrack. It's quite a haunting sound when isolated. -Now this here at 3:15. This has always been one of my favorite shots of the whole short. It really demonstrates the sheer earth-shaking presence Samson has compared to Linus traveling through this same location before. I've always loved the idea that in comparison Linus, who himself is a cartoon character at heart, Samson is just this regular, massive, absolute machine of a locomotive who stoically barrels through the country around him. A living embodiment of efficiency, if you will. - Starting here at 4:05, there's Samson's bell again, now seemingly heralding his own demise. And of course the heavy clanking his moving parts makes as he tries to reverse off the bridge. It's here in particular where the heavy metallic clanks and squeaks help emphasize just how massive Samson and the heavyweight coaches he hauls actually are, and in turn, how much effort little Linus has to put in just to get them going by himself. -To round this off, I do have to wonder. Were you able to isolate the drumline from the original soundtrack, or did it have to be specially recorded, like Linus' whistle? Either way, I really admire the effort! Wonderful work, once again!
@achesworth2 ай бұрын
Thank you for this wonderful breakdown! Samson's bell, like the percussion, intentionally works musically but was spotted as a sound effect. It was directed to evoke a death knell, initially for Linus and then for him as you pointed out. The original drums were isolated from the live recordings using software. The sandpaper chugging rhythms (also performed by drummer J.T. Bates) were recorded separately. Some additional drum cues for Samson and the bridge sequence were also recorded separately.

It’s only now that I realize that Samson at 3:31 blew a HORN! Not a whistle! But still, the fact you bothered putting in the effort of adding sound to this short film is something that is… astounding and very wonderful. It’s great to put in the little details…

Dude, I didn't realized that you worked on Zootopia! Your work was phenomenal! Say, could you recreate the shots you did in Zootopia, but instead draw them in 2D? Particularly, the shots where Judy says, "So no matter what type of animal you are, from the biggest elephant...." and "I implore you. Try." Make it look just like the movie, but in 2D, something akin to the Princess and the Frog.

Id assume this is probably a that linus being replaced by Sampson is a reference to American railroads and factorys that were building Locomotives Much larger than before, Going from small 4-4-0s to Locomotives as big as 4-8-4s and 2-10-4s and what not even 4-8-8-4s As even streamliners starts to exist and locomotives becoming wider and taller due to the loading gauge being more expanded.
