Giving Starfleet a black eye is one thing. Losses like that are abstract and impersonal. Attacking the populace directly, especially Earth, galvanized the civilization into fighting this war with all the stops removed, gloves off, old school, curb stomping resolve humanity told everyone they'd evolved past. The Breen strike pulled up all those repressed brutal tendencies in humanity that had been dormant since WW III and gave them terrible voice.
@The_Lucent_Archangel9 ай бұрын
@@witchdoctor1394 I've always wondered if on a societal/historical level, Man's history of martial prowess and brutality being something they vocally put behind them by the time they really got out into the galaxy contributed to their friction with the Klingons. Theirs is a society that never abandoned those sentiments and virtues, and coming into contact with one who has would have to be a major form of culture shock. Kind of how Soval justified the Vulcan POV on Humanity - they managed to recover from a nuclear holocaust, unite, and head into space in a fraction of the time it took the Vulcan people after their own apocalyptic conflict.
@witchdoctor13949 ай бұрын
@@The_Lucent_Archangel the way I've always viewed the human/Klingon friction is with the humans treating the Klingons almost with kid gloves hoping that eventually they'll come around to the human standpoint of 'violence is bad' and have some crisis moment of clarity (like humanity did with the Eugenics Wars leading into the nuclear holocaust of WW III) leading to societal change. The Praxis Incident, I believe, was the event that the Federation thought would spur that change. I'm not entirely sure that it wasn't the change that the Federation hoped it was but it took A LOT longer than it took the humans to fundamentally transform the Empire. But then again, the Klingons were already a multi-planetary at that point and might've slowed that progress whereas Humanity was still essentially a single planet civilization during their revelation. Humanity never lost that brutal instinct, that killing instinct, but had just gotten so sick of it that it was relatively easy to embrace a policy of peace and a better way. That instinct is definitely, solidly there and when the chips are down (as Quark so eloquently noted) Humanity has zero problem pulling that out of their back pocket and becoming a scourge the likes of which can make the galaxy tremble under its boot. Picard's (S3) Confederation is a good illustration of that. Do Not push the Pink Skins onto thin ice...

I’ve always assumed that the Breen executed the attack using reconnaissance from the Founders, who likely prodded them to launch the assault. Otherwise we have to believe the Breen were better at subterfuge than Romulans and bolder than Klingons. Also noteworthy, is how this attack required methodical technical knowledge and planning whilst seemingly no knowledge of the character of their enemy was factored in. It was uniquely impersonal to launch a symbolic suicide attack without factoring-in the human reaction. Quark understood the truth about humans, which is that we are only as benevolent as our circumstances allow us to be. Attack allies on our frontier, and humans negotiate. Attack our sacred Earth, and you get humans making necklaces out of trophies from the enemies they’ve killed. The Klingons understood humans, or they would’ve attacked Earth too. It was necessary writing to increase the drama for the series. It really is impossible to have succeeded at all given the state of all things…and if they really wanted to devastate the federation then why didn’t they use their energy dissipaters and eliminate utopia planitia earth star base earths defense fleet and then just sit in orbit and lay waste to the planet surface almost mockingly waiting for reinforcements to arrive only to be incapacitated as well and getting a front row seat to the end of the federation…oh right…cause the attack wasn’t feasible as presented except to prolong the war until the series finale so they could end the show with a pathetic battle sequence that doesn’t match either battle of chinktoka much less the brilliance of sacrifice of angels. Like that was a mid season battle sequence that we all know had a lower budget and time constraint than a finale would…we deserved better than a few phaser blasts with Breen ships included and then a replay of the last 2 seasons of battle sequences and even a scene from generations when the bird of prey exploded….like come on yall…a massive invasion fleet goes into cardassia. Don’t show us replays. Show a battle that we talk about more than sacrifice of angels. Remember the operation return episodes were supposed to be mid season…so when they became episodes 5&6 instead the time to do all the sequences was suddenly and massively reduced…yall had 18months to prepare sequences for the final battle. And all we got was replay and a few phaser shots from a stationary galaxy class ship and a Klingon attack cruiser firing a single blast at a jemhadar battlecruiser which wasn’t firing…and evasive maneuvers pattern omega isn’t a 360 loop to come in behind the 2 jemhadar ships who were behind u and are vastly more maneuverable and wouldn’t have been out maneuvered like that….bht what do I know?

I'm thoroughly chuffed that you're a fellow Trekologist and have focused your efforts on providing us all with these enjoyable vignettes. BUT!... By this, I mean why wouldn't the Breen (or any attacker targeting Earth and aware of the Sol system's defensive emplacements) avoid approaching along the ecliptic plane-the plane in which most planets orbit due to the system's formation from a protoplanetary disk? Instead, they could move out of plane and approach from the Z-axis, bypassing both the planets and the protection of the Moon and other orbital installations, which predominantly orbit Earth's equator in a latitudinal procession. The band in which geosynchronous satellites reside is a narrow channel centered around the equator, with a height difference of only about 200 to 300 kilometers between apogee and perigee. This band begins at an altitude of approximately 35,786 kilometers. Given the advanced technology available in the Star Trek universe, it would be trivial for any attacker to avoid this region entirely. With a 3D view of the Sol system, approaching Earth from outside the plane of planetary orbits would be an obvious and superior strategy to avoid most defenses. I would love to hear your thoughts on my observation, if you'd be so kind. Thanks!

I'm surprised at how tame you went with this one. The whole point of that DS9 episode was the Federation losing its plot armor so the newly introduced Breen could hand them their behinds on a silver platter. Especially how we see the Federation later, I would have expected far more devastation: millions dead, destruction in every major city, at least one Sovereign destroyed with the majority of the Home Fleet.

This is Star Trek, not 40K. The writers would never allow such war crimes to happen. Let's be honest, if this was written realistic the Dominion would make use this chance to make the sun go nova and completely destroy the entire Sol System. To send a message to the entire Alpha quadrant. Surround or die.

@The_Lucent_Archangel9 ай бұрын
Just one state, really. Poor Florida. Also by that logic, the incident with the Verteron Array kind of counts as a direct attack / threat on Earth and that happened after the Xindi arc. Even if it was by homegrown terrorists.

@@lyinarbaeldeth2456 Been a while since I watched Enterprise, so wouldn't remember if the beam cut into South America. Was a real brazen move on their part either way, and alerted Earth. If they'd tested the weapon on a planet a comparable distance from their space instead odds are the actual attack would have come out of nowhere. I'm sure Daniels would have tried to warn Archer anyway, but without something concrete like that first "test" I doubt the brass would have let the NX-01 take off on a random, long term mission like that.

Could be wrong but i don't think that the federation existed at the time of the zindi attack. That along with the Romulan/earth war led to the creation of the federation. Strickly speaking one is right but i think that earth and the fed are being looked at interchangeably? I dunno. 👀

@venomgeekmedia9886 The Dominion was never on Earth's Door step. During the Lead up to Sacrifice Of Angel's. Damar says that the 2nd and 5th fleet pulled out of the fighting Vulcan border. Now, the border isn't defined, but Vulcan was in space for thousands of years before Joining the Federation. It is highly likely that Vulcan has significant holding and small colonies outside of their own star system. We also know that the operation return was to be made up of 3 feels total. 2nd ,5th, and 9th. Being that it's said on screen that the Dominion had 1254 ships at the battle, and the Federation fleet was out numbered 2:1 , with the 9th fleet or the Klingons showing up means that 2 Federation fleets numbered at least 625 ships. These fleets had been engaged in combat in Vulcan space for months as well. It's possible the Average Federation fleet had more ships too. I would say it's reasonable to assume that the the 3rd fleet numbered at least 300 ships. Considering how highly defensive the Federation is, I doubt the 3rd fleet was ever deployed from earth, except for made the final push at the end of the war.

I remember the dominion war source book at a different details. A larger fleet . On parol near mars ambushed and destroyed. And blulock and his gleet coming to reinforce. There were more casualties they hit the power snd communication grid as well. And struck paris , new yotk snd Beijing. ( last two just because of large civilian population) it took two weeks to restor power . But the desth toll was in the millions. They destroyed the federation building in paris office of the president. Star gleet lost . Around 200 ships . It didn't say how they managed to get to earth . Enterprise was present. I believe.

I always thought 3rd fleet was comprised of ships not ready for the front lines and had been reassigned to home fleet…but even then best of both worlds earth defenses at Jupiter and mars defense perimeter still responded to a single ship threat…but a home fleet and a star base capable of holding off an attack from within when the borg virus allowed a huge portion of the federation fleet to plaster the base for hours while Picard and crew went to the fleet museum board and activate the enterprise D and bring it back…none of those defenses were ready for an attack of any kind? Breen or otherwise…and when did starfleet start naming their ships after the Klingon homeworld?…maybe in 31st century after they were federation members
