This is exceptional. You guys are fast becoming excellent interviewers. I really appreciate the way you two refrain from interrupting and interjecting like so many amateurs seem to do. You guys are great at utilizing restraint and allowing the interview subject to reveal things naturally. Excellent work!

126 minutes of pure inspiration - you guys are killing it with these interviews! Love Brendan's views on comics as pop music; it definitely comes through in all the stuff with Pete Milligan.

For those who are not familiar with The Prisoner tv series, it is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime and tubi! It's definitely worth a watch.

And more importantly, are they any images of his Prisoner paintings available? I think Mr. McCarthy would prolly make a great number 2. He'd come on all chummy at first, offer some tea. Laced with monstrous hallucinogens. At least the ensuing interrogation would have great art direction.

Also, available on Prime, is "Secret Agent" / "Danger Man", Patrick McGoohan's previous series which had interesting and entertaining stories, often with fascinating actors and actresses, in half hour episodes. McGoohan's character in that series was the one sent to the village in The Prisoner.

The Prisoner was a fundmnetal inspiration to almost all of the British comics creators of McCarthy's genration: Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Pete Milligan, and many others have acknowledged its influence. Rorschach's line to Veidt in the first issue of Watchmen: "Be seeing seeing you" is probably a little hat tip to the series (just as one example). The 80s DC comics series done by Dean Motter is worth checking out as well.

@@SnakeNel This was never confirmed in the series or by McGoohan. Making no. 6, John Drake actually reduces the implications of what is going on in the series.

I pretty much savor every deep cut, long conversation that holds up comics as comics, not a storyboard. Coming from film theory, I really need to see and hear about separation and on its own.

This is fantastic . Such an interesting informative creative . The man properly answers a question anyway . Could listen to him all day . Fair play for letting him just speak his mind without interrupting. This is the best show /podcast I’ve encountered . Keep them coming . Would love to see more 2000ad featured . It really is a treasure trove . Sound lads.

I can't tell you how very much I appreciate your channel guys, especially at this difficult time. I'm listening to you every day at the moment whilst in 'lockdown' here in the UK and racing to get some pages done! You are such very good company and a constant source of creative inspiration and excellent information and this interview with Mr McCarthy has been the highlight of my Easter Sunday. You are truly doing a great service to culture; Mr McCarthy is one of the very best artists that I've always wished I could meet and talk process with, and now I feel I've sort of done that. The way you approached this and all your interviews is really superb. My best wishes to you both.

Thank you very much for this wonderful interview. I was wondering how you were going to follow up the Bissette interview, and this was as good. It also seems to be a scoop, as he indicated he hasn't done much in the way of print and video interviews. Another loquacious speaker, who just needed to be prodded with perceptive questions from you gentlemen. As Ed said, there was a lot to digest. I loved his philosophical attitude about the ups and downs of his career. I have enjoyed all of the shoot interviews, but this was one is one of the best. I've read the book, "We Told You So, Comic Books as Art", but would enjoy seeing an interview with Gary Groth. (That huge, excellent book is currently available for $14.95 from amazon.)

Yes! We want more Swimini Purpose! It sold out just around the time I found out about it :( I've been a fan ever since I saw bits of Freakwave on the Internet in the mid 2000s. I think Vanguard Illustrated/Strange Days were among the first comics I ordered from USA, whenever I was able to order stuff on-line. Great interview! I really liked the comics/music comparison. Gives me a new insignt into a lot of his work.

Man, what an early/mid 80s line-up 2000AD had: Ewins, 2 McCarthys, Dillon, Bolland, McMahon, Ezquerra, Bellardinelli, R Smith, Talbot, Gibson, Gibbons, O'Neill; later Fabry/Pugh on Slaine. That's just the artists. I'll stop after saying Mills, Moore, Wagner. And to cut a long story short, the publishers royally ruined it by basically treating creators and the product like dirt.

well done guys! again you bring the heavyweight artist! I grew up with 2000ad in the 70's/80's, so unlike you guys in the states your introduction to McCarthy was in the 90's with Strange Dayz /paradax etc but when did a few Dredd strips in 2000ad in mid 80s; it blew our little minds! Im glad he touched on his OZ sequence near the end, if you havent seen it you gotta! bout 1985..when he drew Dredd..seriously it was like nothing else before it..AND the covers he did for BAd Company etc x peace!

Reboot is still awesome. Everything about it was ahead of its time. Amazing concept, characters, humor. And the animation, though a little stiff by today's standards, is way more creative than most full CGI works that have come since.

2000ad has its place to be sure, but it seems, like Heavy Metal, or Saturday night live, to not be able to recapture the lightning in a bottle of that seminal period. It's an institution rather than a style maker. I wouldn't want it to go away but clearly it's not the magazine it was.
