Fascinating! I love this book. The Karamazov brothers would be at home at any pre-covid Irish wedding or funeral! I’m happy Dostoyevsky took his time making sure we got to know all the personalities before the story takes off. I can get confused with Russian names, but he made it easy for me. Speaking of the description of poverty, this is a late Victorian novel and the poor in England are described in similar ways in London and mill or mining centres. Thanks for your hard work. Deb

I don't think Ivan is a devil! I think he is supposed to be a genuinely good person who is just struggling with what it means to be good - but what makes him good is the fact that he is continually striving after good, even if he doesn't know how to go about it. He uses cynicism to mask his vulnerability in that sense. I think the only true "devils" in the novel are the "father" and the lackeu. All the other characters, even when their striving is imperfect and/or deeply flawed, *are* striving towards good.

Thanks, enjoyed this. Something that really struck me as being quite out of place was the incident where Ivan elbowed Maksimov in the chest off the carriage. Do you have any thoughts on that, as it was a sudden burst of seemingly random violence - I feel like Ivan is quite perceptive as to whom he feels are leeches on Russia/ others and doesn't suffer their company, but I felt it was odd all the same.

I just finished book 4 and rushed to watch this video. I feel like you could have broken this down in much more detail. This seems like a VERY short synopsis of each book and then some discussion. I would have enjoyed a 20 minute plus video on each book individually in order to have more discussion on the details contained within each book. Maybe you will discuss further books in more detail but this left me wanting more.

I realize this video is quite old and my question may not get answered here, but I’ve begun reading this book yet I’m struggling with something right off the bat. I don’t understand the authors use of multiple names for one character? Or perhaps I missed something, but as an example, in book two when Alyosha meets up with Rakitin after dropping off the elder at the hermatage, in their dialog Rakitin addresses Alyosha as Alyosha in one paragraph, then as Aleksey. And the same for Rakitin. He is referred to as Misha at one point. Did I miss something earlier in the book or is this some sort of nickname the characters use for each other? I’m def new at reading classics and find that I lose focus reading this with the authors unique writing style. Please help and thanks in advance for any clarity someone may provide.
