The cinematography in this video is beautifully fitting for the atmosphere of the game. This video truly gives the viewer a sense of the feeling of the game while recontextualizing it as more more grungy and dirty than the game's own blinding neon visuals. Best hotline video essay I've seen.

Jacket wouldn't have developed DID from the war, as DID is a disorder that develops in childhood (cut off age around 9), however (c)ptsd can very many cause psychotic symptoms, including delusions, hallucinations, and disassociation that he's very likely experiencing! Not to say it's impossible he has DID, but it would have to be something he had long before adulthood. That aside, this is a great video and very well done!

17:09 the answer to that question is more complicated than it first seems, and it appears in this context likely because the three animal mask individuals are in fact part of Jacket’s psyche. Jacket likes hurting other people when it has a purpose, or when he feels like it does at least. After his first mission, when he kills the homeless man, he immediately pukes. This is believed by many to be because he finds the act revolting afterwards because part of him realizes that man was an innocent, after the more animalistic part of him took control and killed the innocent man. He could’ve puked at any point after going on a killing spree, but he was fine until he killed the homeless man, and throughout the rest of the story, we don’t see him puke again, and he never kills another innocent person. So likely the answer to the question “do you like hurting people?” Plays off of the morally ambiguous theme of the story, because one could argue Jacket is an anti-hero of sorts, and he kills within a principled framework based off of his own personal sense of justice.
