Philippine mythology's finally getting noticed! While I love the stories and folklore from the more popular mythologies, nothing hits as close to home than the ones I grew up with (and believed in when I was kid)
@quintusix73158 күн бұрын
I appreciate the feature of Philippine Folklore, but a lot of these are "internet research" entries and are very diluted with the modern perspective. Like a "Hollywood" version that's so far from their original contexts. They're not all "Brutal" some of them, a lot of them are very spiritual, like the Tikbalang which are actually revered spirit guides. I hope you consult experts next time, there are tons out there. The illustrations are fantastic tho!

I appreciate the mention of the Spanish Influence too
@annapreble8 күн бұрын
I'm from okinawa and noticed some similarities between our islands: for example we also use salt to purify and ward off evil spirits and also had a strong animist tradition. But I love learning about pinoy history and culture! The influence of the Spanish and catholic traditions were fascinating. I wonder if the occupation years brought up new supernatural beliefs? The Japanese were pretty demonic then imo
@goodwillhumping73318 күн бұрын
the use of salt to purify and ward off evil spirits actually has a scientific basis. due to its antibacterial properties, salt is used to preserve food as it absorbs moisture which is where bacteria thrive.
@GenJuhru8 күн бұрын
The natives then too believe in deities, offering blood sacrifice for good harvest, construction, safe passage and whatnot. Christianity/Roman Catholic coopted local traditions for easy assimilation.
@annapreble8 күн бұрын
@GenJuhru thank you for explaining that further. I'm seeing the questions in the comments about the authenticity of the demons depicted and the church meddling really lends to the suspicion - I recall what was done with pre-1492 deities in the Mexican heritage. Colonialism is a helluva drug

Pretty sure the Spaniards had a hand in alot of the legend as propaganda like with the Salem Witches, they vilify village healer to witches or monsters

sigbins are not that scary. they're used by aswangs for scouting cause sigbins can turn invisible. but in some cases normal people who can take them make them pets and uses them to put deceases or harm others in return it brings them luck.

There is a lot of upsides on those creatures tho. Little known fact is, even some shamans have elemental companions to counter malevolent ones. Like the sigbin can be treated as a pet giving them charcoal to eat in return will give you luck for business. The tikbalang can be tamed if you get the golden hair from its mane. The kapre can be befriended so it can pass them jumbo joints 😂. And the aswang usually shamans/warlocks and manananggal usually witches can also be befriend for either easy transportation. Just hear me out 😂

Another trait of the tiyanak/chanak is it's deception. When you hear it's crying or laughing voice behind you, it is in front of you somewhere. As well as when you hear it's voice in front of you, it is behind you. So even though you know that it is a tiyanak that you've encountered, running away from it might be a challenge.

sigbins were also depicted to have a chain around there neck that they drag around making clanking sounds, for that reason when i was a child i would be scared of that sound, escaped house dogs notably makes these sounds (since they are mostly chained and they run around when they escape)

The Manananggal experience is crazy, don't know if it's a giant bat but with my cousin I pointed flying under a full moon. Only moon shine's brightly that day as street lights is just enough to light passer by in silhouette. Just so people know giant bats of the Philippines, only flies in numbers and normal bats fly tree high. Seeing something flying alone like a tiger roaming can be crazy. What's crazy is I pointed to the thing telling my cousin, which is a no, no in any event or any supernatural in my country 😂

And each of us have sundang... We dare it to come closer to fight us... But it didn't dare... Maybe it sense our eagerness to fight and didn't feel fear of its presence...

Idk why this dude is using the ilocano name Batibat for the first creature instead of using the much more famous name of Bangungut in Tagalog
@syd.a.m8 күн бұрын
Probably because bangungot is also used colloquially to refer to nightmares. In fact, that's the most common usage of the word. Batibat, on the other hand, seems to only refer to the creature. Perhaps that's why that's the name most commonly used on the internet, especially by non-Filipinos.
@MaliciousMollusc8 күн бұрын
@@syd.a.m That's also inaccurate due to translation. Nightmares are also considered as evil spirits in western myth, similar to modern sleep paralysis demons.
