As a male, I can definitely relate to this 100%. During highschool i had long curly hair to the point where if i pulled it down, it would reach my waist but when idle, it would be a fair bit below my shoulders. I would constantly get bullied and teased because of this, and it would always try and bring me down. But to me, my hair is much more. Its my pride. An extension of my culture and tradition as an Aboriginal. That itself would always give me self confidence and self love for who I am.

doThatGWalk Aww thanks. Yea it happened in grammar school. Guess she wasn't used to seeing a black girl with long hair. In my family it was normal. I was traumatized for years til adulthood. I never wore my hair out. This girl did that only because my hair length, she didn't even know me. But I felt some justice because once my mom found out, she told HER mom and she got in trouble. It's such an odd thing to have happen to you. Keep growing that hair out! Let it go, let it flow! #longhairdontcare And don't cut nobody else hair *eyeballin u* lol

As black men we take a lot of heat and hits for EVERYTHING we do. We are so limited to how we can be that we are denied individuality. We are not acceptable in the work place, school, etc... I even stopped my KZbin channel out of fear that people would begin doing things that you spoke about in your video. People are cold and mean and I'm not. After seeing this I'm gonna start my KZbin channel and talk about WHATEVER I WANT. Excellent topic great substance. Thanks for being open and honest about what so many of us black men deal with.

I know exactly how you felt. I had long curl fro in middle school and freshman year and people would just fuck with me all the time because my hair, so I would wear a hoodie all the time. It got very depressing over time. They would also make fun of my skin color and eyebrows because I was dark skin with long curly hair and good eyebrows. Eventually I cut my hair because of all the name calling and embarrassment, even my teachers would make little comments about me and my hair such as "why don't you just tell your mom to get you a hair cut.", "Maybe if you would just get a hair cut, you won't have to wear a hoodie.", and "Why is your hair so long you look gay.". It's gone to the point where I dont go to public school anymore because of all those people opinions. And now that my hair is getting curly and long again and I've been watching your videos and other videos on natural hair and it's really given me the confidence to be proud of my hair and skin because personally people's negative opinions, questions, and suggestions really dont have an any impact on how I feel about skin, hair, and my overall self. So...thank you for making this video and I hope this video helps anyone who is feeling self conscious about their hair or anything else.

People are going to always ridicule others when you don't fit in because of your appearance. I'm so glad that you didn't cut it. You did what you wanted to do and you don't have to fit into everyone's little box. I never fit in growing up and didn't want to. Be yourself and do you! Life is too short to live for others. Live for yourself and you define you and make yourself happy!!! I think what hurts the most is the hatred that you receive from your own community growing up for being different. I love you Gio and keep growing it.

I really admire you're strength and that you lead your own path. I am indigenous cree, and in my culture our hair is our sacred connection to creator. It is known that the longer the hair the more intuition you have because it's longer. Almost like an antenna of wisdom and knowledge. One thing that happened in residential schools was that all indigenous men and women and two spirit people were forced to shave their hair off and so through colonization we as indigenous people have been taught we are not allowed or supposed to have long hair. I recently started growing out my hair because I want to get back to that root of who I am. Also one of the teachings in our culture at least with growing your hair is the teaching of patience. When indigenous people cut their hair if they ever do they do not let it be thrown in the garbage at the salon because the hair is sacred they will keep it and during a ceremony with the sacred fire lit they will throw it in their. This is because we believe our hair is alive and holds energy and spirit/wisdom and knowledge, we do not let it stay on the ground or have people touch it because it's a transfer of energy. The only times in traditional teachings that we cut our hair is when someone very close passes away we cut the hair off in honour of death and rebirth. That's just from the indigenous native culture....all in all I believe we should as a society step out of all the deep programming and conditions that men can only have short hair or woman can only have long hair.

Thanks for sharing this. This reminds me of my experience in primary school. I had really long and healthy hair up until 4th/5th grade. Around this time I was diagnosed with alopecia, so I started to lose hair all over my head, it was so bad that I had bald spots all over my head. My school mates were brutal, they would tease me and call me all sorts of names. It got so bad that I started walking with my head bent in hopes that people wouldn't see the bald spots. What made it even worse was the constant doctors visits, I was constantly seeing a dermatologist who would give me scalp injections and creams to apply on my scalp. All of this took such an emotional and mental toll on me that my hair refused to grow. Thankfully, my hair started to grow again after moving schools. Anyway, if I could go back, I honestly would not change a single thing as the brutality I faced in the hands of my school mates helped me to be a stronger person; emotionally and mentally.

I'm proud of you. I'm happy to know that you didn't let pure pressure make you do something just to fit in a box. It takes more courage to stand up to ppl who are too weak to stand up for themselves. Meaning, they themselves would be too weak and would just cave and be what "others" tell them to be instead of being strong and saying "No". "That's not who I am." I think that we need more ppl to be like you. I have always felt like, if what I am doing does not hurt anyone else, then why can I not just be happy being me. I could see if I was doing something that hurt other ppl, but just doing something that makes me feel like an individual and it doesn't hurt anyone else, why are you even getting upset about me just doing my own thing. I'm proud of you. I'm proud of you for having the courage to just be YOU. Hugs.

I started growing my hair out at age 5/6 (I'm a girl). My mom kept my hair in a page boy cut style up until then. She didn't think I was serious but after about a year I refused to go to the hairdresser as I noticed it wasn't really growing that much. Then she knew I meant it, and I grew it out to classic length (over the bum length) at age 10/11. I then had it cut back into a page boy cut, but that was the age I was starting to have to care for it myself and shorter was a lot easier. LOL My mom always sent me off to school in pigtails (it had to be contained for school), and I couldn't do those on my own. I grew it back out to classic length 2 years ago, I was 43 then. Memories! It's tailbone length right now. I'm keeping it long for as long as it's comfortable for me to do so.

lovelyone0509 don't cut it! Long hair is so beautiful on boys and men. It's a crown and there will be haters. As long as you keep it real with him that people will tease him because they are haters and that he can still do him anyway because he's a king inside, why not? Just build him up

Hope you let him keep it, because people are going to hate you no matter what.

Hey geo good on you bro, to all the negative people they are just subjects to a society from once upon a time who doesn't know better. You. You are a true artist, a true believer and a person with a colourful and lively soul for the world to enjoy. Keep up the wonderful work, you are doing great bro.

Great story! It’s always a beautiful thing when you realize you don’t have to give any f*cks about what others think about you. School is always rough. I love your hair and this video. Thank you 😊

went through the same thing bro; have had long hair half of my life and I'm Mexican and black, im in my mid 20s now, and got all the same insults and was teased for it but I learned to embrace it in highschool, because as much as it hurt me it helped me People remembered me easier and it got me alot of modeling opportunities hair stuff mostly. I cut my hair off a couple of years ago now I'm growing it back and it's pass my shoulders nowhere near long as yours but don't ever cut your hair unless You want too, because it will take you places.
