The Bruvi Brewer - geni.us/euhAh
When I first read about the Bruvi and their B-Pods, I almost scoffed at their "Guilt Free Toss". As I peeled the layers back of their supposed solution to coffee's pod waste problem, I got more an more surprised.
Single serve pod coffee brewers aren't for everyone, but they also aren't going anywhere any time soon. Is this what the next generation of pod coffee looks like? Is the Bruvi and systems like it set to become the new best pod coffee machine?
Listen in for my take on The Bruvi Coffee Maker.

This video is sponsored by Bruvi. As a part of my due diligence on this project I brutally pestered the Bruvi team for their test processes and results. Thanks to the Bruvi team for your patience in answering all my questions and congratulations on a truly innovative solution to a very difficult problem!

I've long admired your content, especially your IG memes. Being deep in the coffee rabbit hole and having a young toddler, I find they resonate profoundly with me. Your reviews have consistently been a highlight. I truly appreciate the transparency. I'm comfortable with reviews of products you receive for free, as long as the company doesn't exert editorial control or preview them beforehand. However, a sponsored "review" where you're compensated AND the company has approval rights, just doesn't sit well with me-and I suspect many in your audience might feel the same. This is merely my perspective, and I understand it's your channel and business. You have full autonomy in your decisions. I just hope "Daddy Got Coffee" doesn't continue in this direction permanently.

Thanks Kevin, appreciate the feedback and your tone here. Know that I’m just a regular guy trying to find my way in the content world. Normally I wouldn’t give a detailed response but it feels warranted here. A couple things in regard to this video in particular. I wrote a very extensive due diligence period into the agreement starting after I received the unit to put it through its paces and dig in to the data, claims, tests and technology. I had the right to pull the plug for any reason during that period had I not been comfortable with the machine, tech, company vibe, or any other reason. Also, after doing an authentic-to-me write up they did not exercise any editorial control whatsoever. In fact, there was not a single edit to what I had written. Had I felt in any way controlled or manipulated I would have waived the agreement. I’m not sure if I will continue to do pieces like this occasionally long term - even if I continue to speak authentically in them there is definitely a certain optic to projects like this. I appreciate the feedback and your tone in giving it! My audience is my priority always!

I bought the Bruvi because of this video. We needed a pod brewer in the house because someone in the household can't be bothered to do anything but press a button. (And I also can't have her keep drinking nestlé instant coffee...) Although I'm not a coffee enthusiast, the coffee from the bruvi does not taste burnt or extremely bitter (over or under extraction?) compared to the stuff produced by keurigs and the like. The pods are kind of expensive, though, at around $1/pod. I think I will end up getting an espresso grinder and pimp out the flair neo that's been collecting dust in an effort to bring the cost/cup down for me 😂.

Hi, great video! After having this for some time, have you had a chance to use the reusable pod? One of the primary deterrents for me is being shackled to b-pods indefinitely. I roast my own coffee and have no interest in buying pre ground pods. Thanks in advance!

On the surface, this is a terrific innovation. I love my V60 pours. The ritual? I’m OK, but there are those days… My wife, out of impatience does the Keurig thing. I’ve beta’d for several companies including Behmor and Baratza. I’d love a crack at the Bruvi! Just sayin’. Nice presentation , BTW.

I find this quite cool but if I were to choose pods id probably go for those coffee balls. In any case, buying any of these is not really an option for example in Austria as the environmental impact of transportation is often much greater than the plastic issue. honestly the best option is to buy coffee beans from a local roaster IMHO.
@goose-lw6js
@goose-lw6js 10 ай бұрын
True but coffee in general is a bit problematic in regards to transportation and CO2 output. The beans have to travel to austria in some form and theres always a lot of CO2 produced during the roasting process. Obviously it's even worse if they roast them e.g. in the US and you double the transportation. Would be interesting to see a more detailed breakdown of the entire coffee chain to understand what impact the transportation and production of those pods has in comparison to all the other stuff that goes into making coffee.

@@DaddyGotCoffee Yeah i feel it might be a bit too ambitious (with potentially little return of investment) for a smaller channel. Someone like Kyle Rowsell would be perfect to cover that because he sells his own beans and transparency is one of his main selling points. That video could also cover how coffee prices work and where the money is going because he also lists FOB, FarmGate etc prices for all the beans on his website. Should be an effective way of self promotion for someone like him.

Since this is more a video that discusses the tech behind the eco system, with very little opinion given on the quality of the brewed coffee, I wonder if the company plan on licensing the bio-tech to big companies like Nestle. It’s works for both parties. Bruvi retire early and Nespresso fixes the biggest (well, second after questions about exploitation) criticism of their system.
@DaddyGotCoffee
@DaddyGotCoffee 10 ай бұрын
It would certainly be smart of them to do so, although I’d bet the big players are racing to develop their own versions as well. I’m more of an espresso and pour over guy but as far as quality of coffee goes, these are the nicest tasting pre-ground k-cup style pods I have used.

@@DaddyGotCoffee Oh I’m not critiquing your video as such. It’s just interesting that the company was so happy for you to focus on the tech because I suppose if it’s all true and legit, then is truly is a game changer. And If they go to Nestle with it; how do we invest!? 😅

@@adamg.manning6088 I can definitely say that I hope we see more of this kind of tech in the future! The reality is we are going to be reliant on plastics for some time yet. This type of advancement really mitigates the impact of that

I am not saying that there is no waste with pods, but there are other types of coffee makers and styles of making coffee that produce more waste. People who use drip makers, for example, frequently never drink all the coffee they make. They frequently use too much coffee grounds. And of course, they throw away the filter. The coffee maker stays on warming the coffee in the carafe. So they are wasting water, grounds, filters, and electricity. I am not saying that pod coffee is the best or anything like that. But I am saying that it actually isn't as wasteful as people think. If there are less grounds being used, less electricity being used, less water being used, and no additional filter being used then they are reasonable in terms of waste compared with some other types of coffee making.

Leaving aside the build quality and cup quality of that machine, as your video suggests it performs well in that regard, I'm not convinced by their "solution" for the single-use pod. The footer of their website makes the following claim: "Accelerated degradation claims are based on ASTM D5526 testing showing that treated polypropylene used in B-Pod outer cups biodegrades 63% in an anaerobic environment (e.g., landfill) in 577 days compared to 2% biodegradation of untreated polypropylene." This means that 37% of the outer cup still remains in the landfill. However, another factor to consider is the weight of their capsule. If the capsule itself is significantly heavier, the advantage is somewhat diminished. Furthermore, we should take into account the energy consumption for the production and proper disposal of this product. For example, the ASTM D5526 test is conducted at 52 ± 2 degrees Celsius to simulate the conditions of a bioreactor landfill. In colder months, these places require active heating to maintain the desired temperature. So even in the best case scenario where the plastic part of this capsule weighs the same as the others, and assuming that the energy consumption during its production is comparable to that of other options (which I highly doubt), this product still pollutes about 38% of a regular plastic capsule. To each their own when it comes to making an eco-conscious choice, but in my view, this is not a "guilt free toss" solution.
@DaddyGotCoffee
@DaddyGotCoffee 10 ай бұрын
It’s worth noting that the test is still ongoing, not finished - something I inquired about and asked for more data on as well. The pod components will continue to break down further over time. In regards to temperature, the process takes longer but in the long run is equally effective compared to untreated. However - your points about manufacturing footprint etc are totally valid, and something that each person needs to weigh as they decide where they draw the line between convenience and waste/emissions. Coffee on the whole is a very difficult beverage to enjoy from a carbon-responsible position. As you said, to each their own - but for pod coffee users, this is real innovation.
@giuseppecesarano108
@giuseppecesarano108 10 ай бұрын
@@DaddyGotCoffee As said in their website, the testing is still ongoing for the hole capsule not for the plastic itself, for that reason and since I'm not that much concerned about non plastic waste in a coffee capsule (paper is totally fine for example) I was only talking about the plastic and in that case the testing is over (and most likely not even conducted by them but by the plastic manufacturer). The fact is that yes is a much better solution against non treated plastic and instead of being around for 1000 years it will be around for 2-4 years but still, it needs to be in a special place at a controlled temperature (even if the process itself can happen at lower temperatures the landfill is temperature-stabilized) and that happens for each single coffee cup made that way. And still, we didn't talk about the weight itself of the capsule and the simple fact that we are comparing it to the worst of all plastics.
