I actually like this version a little more (If it's saying anything without being harsh, Gary's vocals while they're serviceable do not hold a candle to the real Buddy Holly's of course and that probably was the idea, but he still faithfully captured the essence of Buddy minus the Strat until the Clear Lake setlist among other things. The filmmakers got the Faosa glasses correct) than Buddy's original copy in the studio with the real Crickets and what I mean by that is the slower tempo sounds more complete than its predecessor. And hear me out on that, I love Buddy Holly's legacy so much that I'd say he's the closest thing to being Mozart in a postmodern context obviously with some admitted biases (He did have symphonic work though at the end of his both his life and career. Raining in My Heart should be the very anthem for all romantic genres), but sometimes Buddy actually performed too quickly. I know he was decades ahead of the time and so ambitious, but still the man had faults as with everyone. Buddy's still my very favorite. The guy's essentially is responsible for all of the music which is pretty much everyone in the industry that followed in his wake if you look how inspirational his short time, but impactful time became. He was the very original hipster if you will since Buddy was the first in so many categories.

Buddy did play fast on the recorded live performances we have. But to be fair, The Crickets were still kids, buddy being the oldest at 21 by the time they had their first hit. Nerves of being on live TV had them jittery. They were extremely tight musically though
@Chrisx005x Жыл бұрын
@@jackcuneo6098 For the live version of, Oh Boy!, Ed Sullivan told 'em to keep Buddy's guitar turned down so Buddy just simply sang over the instrumentation as I understand it. I don't know that to be true or not, but I don't blame him if it's so. Why even get any kind of performing act together in front of lots of people only to deny them not only their money's worth, but their fullest experience? As long as people aren't getting hurt there really shouldn't be too many restrictions on the artistic direction of how it's presented. And Buddy was such a pioneer for the industry's growth in so many profound ways. Not only was he the first or at the very least one of the very first to wear glasses on stage, he made a bold statement and pretty much said, "Hey, I'm 'gonna wear the thickest kind possible" 'cause I 'wanna be different. Why does it matter that I'm not just a pretty face?" Completely revolutionary in the most positive sense. Buddy's my very favorite musician of all time as I suspect with so many others.
@jackcuneo6098 Жыл бұрын
@@Chrisx005x It’s true. If you watch the performance, you can see Buddy trying to turn up his volume knob on his Stratocaster. Buddy made a sarcastic remark to Ed Sullivan before the show, which offended him. Sullivan had hit acts on all the time, and had no idea that Buddy was gonna be as big as he’d end up being. Funny part was, the performance was so well received that Ed had one of his assistants tell the Crickets that he wanted them back for another show. Buddy responded “he doesn’t pay enough” and declined. Rock and roll man

Lester Wiebe Major points wrong with the 'Hollywood version of Buddy Holly's life story': 1. His parents not only supported him in his music, all three Holley (correct spelling) brothers were musicians and Buddy's mother actually wrote most of the lyrics to "Everyday". 2. The main reason Buddy and The Crickets split up was due to producer Norman Petty of Clovis, NM who owed them money. 3. Buddy met and proposed to Maria Elena all in the same day. 4. Buddy toured Australia and England with other people including Jerry Lee Lewis. The first night they were to play in England, the tour manager had hired a local high school band to play back up for Jerry Lee and they couldn't play, so Buddy and band played as Jerry Lee's band. 5. On the fateful night of February 2, 1959, there was no 'grand orchestra' on stage at the Surf Ballroom. Buddy and The (new) Crickets were missing Carl Bunch, their drummer who was in the hospital with severe frostbite to his feet. The group arrived at The Surf Ballroom 30 minutes before show time - no showers or clean clothes to wear - and set everything up in front of the waiting sell-out crowd. Buddy switched back and forth between guitars and drums and thought that he gave a sub-par show, but the crowd afterward thought it was incredible to see such talent in a 22 year old Buddy Holly. - - - -Garey Busey, Charles Martin Smith, and Don Stroud, did a great job in playing Buddy's music. It is the ONLY reason why I watch that incorrect-interpretation-supposedly-biographical movie.

If you want the real thing, get The Real Buddy Holly Story produced by Paul McCartney. There are a few clips from it on U Tube. Gary Busey was miscast as Buddy. He's a loudmouth where Buddy was actually quiet. Buddy didn't wear a white sport coat or play a Telecaster. He played a Stratocaster. Norman Petty isn't even mentioned. Too many flaws. Buddy's wife liked it but Buddy's family said it was inaccurate. The original Crickets said it was a joke..One even wrote a song about how bad the movie really was. If you like this movie, go for it. I would have loved to see a 40th anniversary dvd of the movie with interviews with the real crickets Maria Elena and buddy's teal family

His teeth were knocked out...He was using chewing gum to hold them in...Amazing Buddy could sing at all..Watch Gary Busey at the end pop out his teeth

Aaron King lol it’s a movie. In real life Buddy canceled the show due to his tooth 🦷

Aaron King, so did gary actually have teeth caps in the 70s like buddy?? Cause the scene before this when they were in the dressing room it really looked like he did when they got knocked out. I know your comment is from 2 years ago but sometimes I wonder if he really had fake front teeth in the 70s.. Rock on man! 🤘🎶

@@aaronking7326 Wow! Thank you for responding bro, he had some balls to do that for this scene lol. Guess that shows how much he got into character for the film. Just wish there was more footage of the real Buddy playing live, much love 👊🙂

Luv this rendition. Even if he flubs the lyrics a bit. These guys played this song w/ thier own feel. But can anyone tell me about those illuminated cheese graters on the stage?? Been wondering since I 1st saw this movie as a kid.
