Well that 20 odd minutes flew by. Nice vid again Paul. Nice to see you back in proper West Country 😂 Good to see the canal back too normal levels too. When the tide is level with the cross section of the iron cross its the half tide point. Half tide Cross. Anyway will look forward to the other videos. Your nearer my part of the west country here 😂

Hi Shaun. Thank you for a lovely comment. I have several Cornish videos to come over the next few weeks. I think I have now lived more in Cornwall for longer than any other county in the Westcountry that I have previously lived in. Thank you for the explanation about that cross. In that canal book I was holding, it lists all of the ships that were wrecked in and around the Bude area in the 19th Century. Just so many! Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate the support. Cheers, Paul 🙂👍

I really enjoyed this! Thank you Paul! It’s another place that I have not been to. Lots of interesting facts and loved the tram line along the side of the canal. I could almost feel like I was actually on the beach enjoying all that fresh air. Really lovely video! Thank you!

Thank you Louise! Glad you liked the video. Yes, it is one of my favourite places in the South West - used to go there fairly frequently when I lived in Cornwall. It was so bracing and refreshing being on that beach. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul.

Really interesting Paul. The rock formations looked great and interesting why they built the canal. Very informative as usual Paul. Take care David 📷

Thank you Wendy! Yes, I actually prefer Cornish beaches in late autumn and winter, as long as it isn't wet or too cold. I am not a fan of the summer. Yes, the sea air did help clear my sinuses, and made me feel less blocked up. I love Bude - one of my favourite places in the South West. Take care, Paul

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland. A wonderfully interesting video. Superb camera work and photography with a brilliant commentary. What a fascinating place Bude is. Superb geology, gorgeous sea views and lovely beaches. A canal built to carry sand - unique I think. Can't wait to see the follow-up video coming in the Spring of 2023. Thanks so much. See you again very soon. Stay safe please

Thank you Michael! Yes, the canal was built using a goverment grant (not private enterprise -again unusual for a canal) to aid the economy in North Cornwall and North Devon - it was reasonably successful for a while. Thank you for your kind comments and for supporting my channel. Take care, Paul.

Hi Paul! Loved this wander and seeing the canal and beach. I was fascinated at the geology of the area, too - seeing the folding in the rocks is always so amazing. How layers of rock can be forced up like that is so impressive, and beautiful, too!

Your video brings back many memories. One of which I will share. I used to park in my living van in a track serving the church. I noticed a grave with a wooden cross amongst the other grander stone memorials. The messages were heart rending because the grave was of a young man with a very young family. One day I spoke with the young lady attending the grave, who explained that she could not afford a stone memorial because all her money was used to bring up her husband's children. To me that simple, but cheap grave said more than all the other more grand memorials. Re the geology. to the left of where Paul filmed in the next cove the rocks are even more contorted into semi circular shapes. On the permanent sand dunes near to the castle I found Autumn ladies tresses, a small orchid, which the local botanists had not realised was growing there. At first site, Bude cannot compare with 'pretty' quaint Cornish villages, but if one looks more carefully, it is truly magical. P.S. There is a move to re-open the railway now that it has reached Okehampton. Lets hope!

That's a lovely memory John. Thank you for sharing it. Beautiful. I hope to explore the Bude coast in more detail next spring when I should be staying around there. As you say, scratch the surface and there is much to see in and around Bude. Also, the town centre, although not beautiful, has lots of independent shops, and seems to be thriving from local people. It doesn't 'shut up shop' in the autumn and winter, like it's bigger and brasher neighbour does (begins with a 'N'!) a bit further to the south. I have always liked the town. Good to hear from you. Take care, Paul 👍🙂

Thank you Debs & hubby! Yes, someone has now replied to my request about info regarding that cross - I have pinned their comment, but it is to mark the tidal mid point between high and low tides. Hah, yes, well, I do read rather a lot! I also know Cornwall very well, having lived in it for most of my life (more than either Devon, where I lived previously, and, Gloucestershire, where I was born, and now live). Thanks again Debs, take care, Paul.

Thank you so much Ron! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, you are right, Cornwall can be magnificient in late autumn or winter. In fact, I think Cornwall is at its best in early spring rather than the summer. Thanks for your kind words. Hope you are well. Take care, Paul.

Hi, keep seeing your comments on Ron's Parkinsons Walks videos, so I had a look at your first one in Dartmouth and subscribed the other day. Don't think I've ever been to Bude before, looks like it's worth a visit. Fantastic semi-natural swimming pool - I'd have gone for a dip!! Interesting to know the reasons for building the canal and amazing the height of the lock at low tide. Look forward to seeing the inclines when you go back. Good luck from Spain!!

Thank you for this Cornish seaside visit Paul. My first video from Bude. I wonder if taking lots of sand from the beach caused any erosion elsewhere. I loved the sea pool. Are there fish in there?!. The sea was roaring and I am glad you enjoyed the sea air.

Thank you Cathy! Glad you enjoyed the video - Bude really is a gem of a seaside resort and as a town too - it doesn't 'close up' like other resorts in the South West and elsewhere, in the winter months. It has a lovely selection of independent shops too. The only downside to Bude is that it is a long way to anywhere else, including other parts of Cornwall, and it lacks a rail connection (but, hopefully, there is a chink of hope that it may reconnect to Okehampton at some future point). I am not aware of any erosion caused by sand extraction here but, of course, that did happen in South Devon at Hallsands (you may remember that I did a video about it), caused by the Royal Navy extracting sand for building the naval docks in Devonport, in Plymouth, towards the end of the 19th C. Bude has two huge beaches, and one in between, as well as a large beach just a short distance to the south (Widemouth Bay), so, as long as the sand wasn't confined to a small area, it should have been fine. I don't think there are any fish in the sea pool - it is managed and cleaned regularly and is a credit to the local town council who look after it. A real draw for visitors for sure. Thanks again Cathy, take care, Paul.

@@westcountrywanderings Paul thanks for your comprehensive reply. Yes I was thinking of Hallsands but could not remember the name. Re the sea pool. I found some July 2016 trip advisor reviews and someone mentioned that there are sometimes jelly fish in the pool but they are usually the non-stinging variety. 🏊‍♀ Yes it will be good if one day there are trains to Okehampton. I hope you have a sunny day when you visit again in the Spring. 😊

Hopefully, I can do that on my return visit, when I should have more time. As you will have seen online, it does look at its best at night. Thanks again, take care, Paul.
