Archival footage from You Tube and put into one continuous 30 min video. This is the promotional film by Wimpey regarding their completion of Llyn Brianne Dam. Which is located near my home town of Llandovery, Wales. This is a fascinating look into its construction, opening and operation of this feat of civil engineering. A time capsule into the dam's construction and its community. I would love to hear from anyone who was involved in the development and construction of the dam.

Thanks for posting this. My late father worked for Wimpey on the construction of this dam. He drove dump trucks for them. He always spoke with fondness of this job even though they spent a lot of the time rained off! He loved the area and made some very good Welsh friends from his time there.

Wow, what an undertaking. We could pretty much just do jobs like this then without all the politics we get now. I went into the Plant game just a few years after this project as an apprentice Plant Mechanic and recognise many of the Machines at work for Wimpey’s. MVRH Rollers-Midland Vibrating Roller Hire!, haha, crickey, that takes me back!.

Don't see many people using a 1RB these days ( ie shovel) that's all operated for the first year on leaving school in the in the 1960 at 15 working on the M1 in Leicestershire.

Coffer or copper dam is like a temporary dividing wall to keep the main waterway away from the working area ,it could be built with whatever is available at the time, stone rock clay or in later years steel interlocking piles driven int0 the ground,when the project is complete the dam is removed and the area allowed to re water.

i understand the water is very acidic due to the leaching of surface water from the surrounding forestry making it undesirable for sustaining fish stock, lime is added to the water on a regular basis to adjust the acidity

2,000 mm = 200 cm = 2 meters! Why do they use the higher number? Perhaps just because it sounds bigger.
@metricstormtrooper
@metricstormtrooper 3 жыл бұрын
Because you don't have to mix measurement like you have to when using imperial measurements say 2584mm it would be 2 metres and 584 mm sort of like 8 feet 5 and 3/4 inches, complicated and more open to error.

@@geraldlrstubbs No. We measure things using both metric and imperial measurements. And the metric system has been taught in UK schools for nearly fifty years.
