If anyone plans on filling the shelves with books be prepared for the pine to bow under the weight. Two easy things you can do: One is to flip the shelves over and let them bend back. Seriously. Or use the same face frame material to trim the front of each shelf which will also help reinforce it (but you can't flip it). This will help but it's best to not overload pine and keep these shelves more open. Nice, simple project, Daniel; well done.

Maybe reducing the shelf length to 20” would fix this? The point of building a floor to ceiling bookcase is to hold a wall-full of books, after all. Next it needs a rolling ladder.

Yeah, the removable shelves add lots of customizability. You could put a cozy little reading chair in the corner, a flat screen TV in the center, a little coffee bar somewhere...tons of options!

Very intrigued by #4, so that gets my vote. This project turned out so cool!!!! Seeing if I can adapt it for my rental since every little nail/screw in the wall is something I'd need to fix later

This one is a liiiittle more renter friendly, since once the frame is secure, you're really not installing anything else into the drywall. If you do end up trying it, I recommend leaving any screws or pocket holes unfilled so that you can unscrew them easily later (vs. ripping them out of the wall). Just hide them with books 😉

I'm laying here at 6am on a Saturday binge watching you. I'm left amazed by your creativity. I may try to convince my husband that your terracotta wall design can be used to create ocean waves as we have a beach home in FL. Or I will look for a large canvas to create a similar look with a less permanent solution. I was amazed by the time you took to paint a gazillion wood slices when you could have spray painted them before hand. And this tutorial is genius. Actually, can you also show wainscoting or a really cool effect using multiple paint choices to do an updated look on an accent wall? Like I really liked adding in all the texture but I am talking about a tiny room that uses an accent wall color but doesn't make space seem smaller.

While the host calls this a "book shelf" he doesn't put any books on his 3/4" pine shelf planks. If he did, he would find that the "shelf pins" are not adequate to the job. On the plus side, the Kregg pocket whole jig is a great idea. On the negative side, I have five complaints. 1: His wall has no baseboard, but a real wall would most likely have a baseboard that would need to be removed (or accommodated) on the bottom shelf, the bottom of the upright columns, and the two outer frame pieces. 2: He doesn't tell you what width stock he is using. I measured some existing shelves and found that while 1" x 10" could work for most books, 1" x 12" is actually need for larger books. 3: He spaces all shelves the same height, when both function and aesthetics would recommend that the shelf heights get smaller as they go up, staring with about 14" on the bottom shelf and going to about 11" on the top shelf. 4: He says nothing about the possibility of the shelves sagging. I built an 8' tall by 12' wide shelf with three supporting columns which meant my shelves were about 34" wide. It turns out that there is a tool called the sagulator which can be found at this URL: woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator/ that lets you know how much sag to expect based on material, dimensions, and weight on the shelf. My pine 1" x 12" x 34" passed muster based on about 40 lbs. per shelf. 5: The most serious complaint is that the shelf pins he uses are entirely inadequate to the job of holding 40 lbs. of books. If I had used his 2-column approach the weight would have been closer to 60 lbs, and those shelves would have sagged badly. The result I received after loading the first 2/3 of my library into the bookcase was 600 books on the living room floor. I replaced the inadequate pins with 1" x 2" x 4" pine supports nailed into the columns and the frame and now the bookshelf works fine.

Hey Tim! You make some great points & I appreciate you taking the time to share those resources. Looking back on this vid, I wish I'd addressed the weight/sag issue. I wanted to fill the whole shelf with books, but I didn't personally have enough on hand and to order them would've exceeded my budget. But if I had, perhaps I would've realized the limitations of this design, particularly if you're planning to fill it completely with heavy books. Looking at that calculator (which is great, btw), it looks like ~30lbs is the limit of each 3/4" x 8" x 36" shelf here. Which would accommodate many books, but likely not 100% capacity. So anyone planning to use this design as a guide, I'd encourage you to plan accordingly! Adding add'l columns, using 2x material vs. 1x, or affixing the shelves permanently like Tim did would all be ways to increase load-bearing capacity.

Oh, what a great question! So short answer is YES, could be done for sure. I'd have to think through how you'd structure it differently to accommodate the glass. The way I did it, the shelves aren't actually fixed in place so that you could reconfigure. With the glass, though, I'm thinking you'd want those shelves to be fixed? A fun challenge!

You know, since you'd be making the cabinet doors yourself, I wonder if you could just install the door hinges directly onto the columns? Then you could fit the shelves in there with the regular shelf pin method, but the cabinet doors wouldn't even be attached to the shelves (except maybe the little magnetic door closer strips). If you try this, PLEASE come back and tell me about it! Cool idea.

That is a great video. I live in an apartment and I cannot drill holes all over the wall to install shelves. I don't want to have to patch all the holes the day I'll leave. This kind of frame is great because I would only drill in the corners. No holes in the wall for the shelves. I might try to build something like this to display my Funko Pops.

Great bookshelf build. What I really love though is that you did it without a truck load of tools. I've watched so many bookcase builds (getting ready to do a whole wall in a new home) that start with: "First I used my jointer...then my planer...then... " and so on. I have a table saw and a radial saw and I can buy a pocket hole jig but beyond that... not going to create a whole cabinet shop for this project. Good work, thanks.

Since you are using shelf pins it wouldn't take much to add more holes. I also think a template is well worth the money- Lowes- $35. I would have put the bottom shelf up a couple of inches and inset a kick plate. This would cut down on the dustf on those items. I would also hang a light under the shelf above the desk and perhaps a piece of art or wall paper or something on black wall.. In terms of what you do next, I won't use any of those ideas. They all look nice. I will suggest that anyone who has children under 21 or pets is asking for frustration with the string art. This would include visiting children or rowdy friends watch sports. Many people of all levels of maturity will have a hard time not touching it and trying to strum it. .

My favorite of your wall ideas! The lighting looks super...the press on/off button is a great idea. I just have to ask...why the dark paint? I know we all have different tastes; however, the dark seems rather depressing. Ket's idea would be a pop of color on the wall behind & a light stain on the wood. Still, the teacher in me gives the project an A+.

Wow! I'm just about to build shelves in a reading nook inset in our new house. They will be about 6 feet from the ceiling, leaving 3 feet for a padded bench and pillows at the bottom. So this video was just what I needed. My shelves will be wider than 7.5 inches to hold larger books and I'm considering building them from stair treads and I'd like the rounded edge on the front of the shelves.. I really hadn't decided how I could do the lighting, so I really appreciate your suggestion. Hopefully I can figure out how to install the cute on-off switch you used.It's such a great idea! I love it! ...although I'm kinda bummed you didn't use some sort of moulding to cover those vertical lines and show us some equally clever ways to work with the corners and joints. Totally voting #1 next.
