The program itself began as Rocky and His Friends and ran for two years as an afternoon program on ABC from 1959 to 1961, before moving to prime time on NBC on Sunday evenings in the fall of that same year, changing its title to The Bullwinkle Show. It retained that title when it moved to Sunday afternoons and then Saturday mornings after its single season/year in prime time. Syndicated reruns of the program then ran on ABC from 1964 until 1973, then on local stations, and then again on NBC in 1981-1982 and returned to prime time - on CBS in 1991. Despite the different title and various airing times (and networks), the program remained pretty much the same throughout its run, and the collective 4 seasons of original programs/series/shows are often together referred to as The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. They are currently available on DVD under still another title, Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends.

The Bullwinkle Show is an expanded prime time edition of Rocky and His Friends, which had aired previously on ABC's afternoon line-up Tuesdays and Thursdays. Episodes produced specifically for the show were screened along with two new features, "Aesop & Son" and "Dudley Do-Right Of The Mounties." The show ran for 3 seasons in prime-time with original episodes. NBC ran repeats on Saturday morning during the 1963-64 season. It was shopped to ABC, but they were not interested. However, in 1964 the repeats moved to ABC on Sunday mornings at 11:00am, where it aired through 1973, at which time the series went into syndication. It returned on NBC in the fall of 1981 at 12:30pm on Saturday Afternoons, and ran just that season until September 11, 1982. It returned in prime time for a two-week run on CBS in 1991 (the 4-episode arc "The Last Angry Moose") as part of Toon-Nite as a summer replacement, On cable, the show had extended runs on Nickelodeon (1992-1996, under the title Bullwinkle's Moose-a-Rama), Cartoon Network (1996-2002, under the title The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show), Boomerang (2002-2005), WGN America (2009), and Boomerang (2013).

Actually, "Aesop & Son" was introduced as a temporary replacement for 'Fractured Fairy Tales" on "ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS" in the fall of 1960 {General Mills insisted on it, but Jay prevailed, and the "Fairy Tales" segments eventually returned, with BOTH appearing on "THE BULLWINKLE SHOW"}.

Oh yes. Music rights wouldn't have been an issue; Fred Steiner, whose music is used on the DVD sets, wrote this theme song, so they should've included this on the Seasons 3 to 5 DVD sets. But then they'd have to try and cover up that "BULLWINKLE SHOW" sign Bullwinkle holds up with the "Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends" logo...

At least that's when we originally watched it. Shame they don't air this on network TV anymore. They need to bring this show to classic TV channels like MeTV and Sundance. This should be back on CN and Boomerang. None of the streaming apps have it either, just the newer ones from 2018-19.

No. This was originally in color from 1961 when NBC (which had color shows, including "Bullwinkle") ran this on Sunday evenings. ABC reran it on Sunday mornings, in color, with this opening, from 1964-73. The original copyright on this clip showed 1961, but the frame was frozen briefly in syndication to show the 1987/1990 deal in bottom left.

To IOPH3 Michael Badger: The "THE" is missing because someone hit the freeze-frame a little too soon. It's supposed to be inside Bullwinkle's top hat. Look closely and you'll see Bullwinkle's hat is still "scrunched" at the freeze-frame. The "THE" would appear a fraction of a second later when the hat returns to shape.

Back in 1961 this was in black and white. What we are looking at is a rehash in color that was probably done in 1965. The first edits were very long and drawn out because the pace was very slow in those days. By modern standard these would need to be edited to get the entire show of twenty minutes condensed into seven.

ABC aired The Bullwinkle Show reruns for 9 years/seasons from 1964 until September 1973, at which time the program went into off-network syndicated reruns. The show would return home to NBC almost a decade later in 1981 after being in syndication for 8 years up to that point, and ran just that season until 1982. It returned in prime time for a two-week run on CBS in April 17, to July 11, 1991 (the 4-episode arc Toon-Nite).

He did when the original series came out, It was called "Rocky and His Friends", and the opening credits was the same theme but in a different key and meant to sound like a circus theme. The reason Nickelodeon had their own custom into had to with copyright dispute issues between Jay Ward's family and the studio that obtained the rights from General Mills. The Ward family eventually won back the full rights, and all subsequent airings and DVD releases now refer to the cartoons as The Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends Show.

In 1959, Jay Ward and Bill Scott invented the name "Ponsonby Britt, Limited" as the new title of their corporation. Britt eventually became an "O.B.E." and retained in the cartoon's closing credits as an in-joke. Bill Scott was quoted as saying, "We had no executive producer, so, we made one up." Britt eventually became the executive producer credited for all Jay Ward productions; even a fake official biography for Britt was even crafted for promotional press releases." Sounds like they were having fun. :-)

jimbo97 When Jay Ward and Bill Scott created and produced the series, they didn't have an executive producer, so they decided to make one up. I'm a huge Rocky and Bullwinkle fan, especially with the neon lights at the beginning and end of each episode. I know these sequences originally began in 1961 when Rocky and His Friends moved from ABC to NBC, but I always enjoyed the show in syndication. I hope there's a way to watch the 98-episode syndicated package online or something.
