I've been a serious mtber for over 20 years and finally learned to bunny hop at 57. It is everything Martin says. There are sooo many ways to use it on a trail. Not just hopping over obstacles, but gapping ditches & puddles, hopping onto ledges, popping off roots, jumping, etc. There is something very magical about executing a good BH. It's taken my riding to another level.

The bunny hop is really a fun trick to know. It's super exciting to jump your first log or rock or fallen tree and never gets old. Take the time, be patient and learn it, so much fun.

I don't have a mountain bike, but do ride a large, heavy, drop bar touring bike. Riding along the concrete revetments along the Chicago lakefront. Once while riding, I ended up in a situation where I couldn't change my line choice because of pedestrians and other cyclists, and had to bunny hop that barge of a bike over a 1 foot gap in the concrete. Super great skill to have, especially when dealing with crumbling infrastructure.

For those who are trying to master the bunny hop, lift the front up first, angle your feet downwards and lift the rear with your legs whilst simultaneously shifting your weight forwards. It's really simple once you get the rhythm and one of the best skills to learn especially for jumps.
@leftaroundabout
@leftaroundabout 3 жыл бұрын
No. That is pretty useless advice. If you try to “lift the front up” (without already having a reflex feeling for how the bunny hop works), you'll find yourself in a position over the bars, and from there there's no way to shift the weight even further forwards or lift the back up (except by the pedals clips, which is generally agreed to be not good technique). The most crucial move is actually at the start to get your mass to the _back_ rapidly enough (while both wheels are still on the ground), so the front rises _without_ pulling it towards you. Only from there (i.e. basically from a brief manual) does the actual hop start, and there's still no lifting of the back wheel at this point. You first need to accelerate your body forwards, i.e. _upwards_ because the bike is now in wheelie position; this only works because the rear wheel is still on the ground so you can push yourself off it. It's mostly this body-accelerating that requires angling the feet down, not something about lifting the rear wheel. Then, when your body has enough forward+upward momentum, the bike follows pretty easily by a combination of yanking the handlebars forwards and suspension/tyre preload. So, a bunny hop is really mostly about jumping _the body_ and getting the bike in the right position to do that, not about lifting the bike itself. That's the easy part, because the bike is much lighter than your body.

I haven't mastered bunny hopping because I've felt like it was inefficient on flat ground. If I am not assisted by speed, incline, or a small bump/root, then a bunny hop feels like I'm doing upper body workouts that immediately tire me. Also I have always been riding XC-oriented geometry (67+ deg) that make a bike harder to pick up until I overfork it or add a riser bar. For logs and and roots on flatish terrain, I just keep my tires planted and roll it while unweighting the front and back wheels seamlessly. That seems faster than constantly doing what feels like chin ups. I think I need to practice manuals and also shed some bike weight...hopping 30 lbs at 140ish lbs is kinda sucking for me.

I wish i could tag you, Martyn, so you didnt miss this… but; do you do any poetry or even song writing or write any fictional literature? I know its not bike related but hey ho. If you do it would be awesome for you to share some with us! Wether it be dirt shed show / instagram or whatever. And if you dont write i think you should, although im presuming you write your own script or your unscripted when i say this. I think your really good with words and your delivery flows in a way i think would suit poetry / spoken word. But yeah! I so hope you reply and turn out to be the next Shakespeare / T.S Eliot 😂

So as a newbie to mountain biking at around 60 years old. What I'm seeing is that there seems to be a similarity between the manual and the beginning of a bunny hop. So is learning one before the other better?
@robertlee5768
@robertlee5768 3 жыл бұрын
I would say getting the manual technique down massively helped me bunnyhop. I tried for a long time and could never get the motion or timing right. Once I practiced manuals a bit (still not good at them, but can get the front up without much thought), I found that the bunny hop wasn't too much of an extension. Breaking it down as 1) Manual front wheel up 2) Shift forward and scoop the pedals 3) Level out the bike made it WAY easier for me. Although the biggest thing for me was just trying for hours and hours out front of my house! I'm sure the neighbors think I'm a fool, but that's the price we pay I suppose

Love the bike design kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube.All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.
