My theory is that it was a little town built by gold prospectors due to its close vicinity to the river. Maybe their endeavors were fruitful for a little bit, hence the single full gold bar. It was being built when Cornwall’s company was just moving into New Hanover. Cornwall probably used the town to support his factory. After a while they pretty much became useless when the railroad ran through Valentine. A gang of outlaws probably heard about their gold, but the prospectors weren’t finding much gold anymore and most of it went to Cornwall’s company. When the outlaws found out they burned down the town out of spite. I don’t have anything to really support other than I think you can still find npcs panning for gold along that river.

In the other brush fire you can find a burnt down campsite with a burnt out campfire. It’s right on the edge of the brush fire. Perhaps it’s possible that wind blew the flame into the trees and caused the fire, the embers perhaps blown by the wind landed around limpany and started another fire

You know, I am replaying at the moment and I'm on the epilogue. Now I am pretty sure that the last time I replayed the game I started the epilogue, I "inherited" (don't want to spoil it for anyone) the gold bars in my satchel, as well as other valuables. This time though, when I started the epilogue, I had all the valuables etc in my satchel from the main game, but all my gold bars had gone! So I went back to the gold bar locations (the train wreck was one) and they're back in those locations....Except for the statue puzzle and I'm guessing the other treasure map gold bars although I'm not 100% about the other treasure map gold bars but I was certain that I would get everything except for food & money in my satchel in the epilogue. Unless Rockstar changed it 🤷‍

Imo I think it's just as simple as the town being downwind from the scorched forest area during that fire embers blew over and caused the town to catch fire and since it was such a small town they were I'll equipped to handle it and it just burnt down. The only gripe I have is none of the NPCS in game ever call attention to these ghost town type areas such as Limpany or Pleasance. Makes it feel like they didn't really intend for these areas to have much interaction other than make a part of the map look fuller

I may be wrong, but I'm sure there was footage in the games trailer where Arthur was watching a blaze? pretty sure I read it was Limpany and it was Cornwall that had it burnt down as a sign of strength. Never noticed about the lack of furnishings in the buildings though, good spot :)

I'm wondering about Moonstone Pond. I know it just looks like a tree that fell on a house, but all the tree stumps around it are strange to me. They all have axe cut marks higher than Arthur's head. Nothing in the game was put there on accident.

Man, I can't find *anything* on it now, but I remember reading during other RDR2 research before that trees cut off like that are from when there was very very deep snow and they cut down trees for firewood. Makes good sense, since it's up in Ambarino and likely to get lots of snow, and then when it melts the trees are revealed, having been cut off way above ground.

Here’s something interesting: search youtube for Rdr2 trailer #3. Towards the end you can hear Dutch’s voice lines about fire, and it shows Arthur on his horse IN LIMPANY while the town still has some flames towards the edges. This leads me to believe that the criminals in the cell and treasure map were only there to replace more cut content of the game (I wish they would have included all of the cut content, but you can’t have everything)

For the record, in America, we do use the term “ground floor”, but only in certain circumstances. If it is a building that has only 2 floors/stories, then we say “first floor” to refer to the floor that is level with the ground. But, if you are in a hotel/apartment/office building with 3+ floors/stories then we call the floor that is level to the ground the “ground floor”, and anything either mostly or entirely below ground is called a “basement” or “cellar” rather than “ground floor” no matter what.

A bit late to the party, but I have an alternative take... The town of Limpany was in the process of being built, and most of the structures are mostly completed. Tar is a substance that is both sticky AND waterproof, making it a viable glue for roofing. Additional benefits are that it acts as an insulator, and isn't as heavy as mortar. Barring acts of God, you don't typically need to worry about your roof catching fire, so the flammability is an afterthought. I think that the contents of the barrels were ALL tar. My hypothesis is that one of the construction workers who was working on the rooves had quite a bit of tar on them, as tar is a messy substance, similar to mortar for brick laying. The town didn't look like an uppity sort of place, so instead of washing his hands, the worker went straight to the saloon after his shift and went to relax. He lights his cigarette and when he goes to put out the match using that little flicking thing we all do, the fire lights the fumes from the tar, sets the man on fire, and sets the saloon on fire. The embers from the burning saloon would set everything else around it on fire. As for the map in the jail cell, since it's pre-order-only (or PC) content instead of vanilla, I say the devs just wanted somewhere to slap a map and threw a dart.

In a game with so much detail if you really think they threw a dart at a map to make a decision you're straight up delusional 😂 Do the 2 men in the jail cell not give it away? A gang attacked Limpany and tried to break out 2 of their members which were captured and held there, they set fire to the town and due to all of the flammable material spread throughout the town it quickly got out of hand. It spread to the jailhouse and killed the men inside before they were able to be broken out. Simple as that!

Also, if that were the case, there'd be no attempt at letting people know someone was smoking in the saloon since it wouldn't be an important detail. To break your argument more, there's no signs of sabotage around the town. Something like an arrowhead from a flaming arrow found on a roof or near the tar barrels, a corpse with molotoves/dynamite- literally anything to suggest it was a gang breakout gone wrong. The 2 bodies in the cells are just decoration. Probably 2 bros who got hammered and were locked up for partying too hard.

My Theory; They we're testing the 'violatile fire bottles' in the forest, and it caught on fire. The hot ashes from the fire perhaps drifted to the town, landing on the barrels or a spillage from a old forgotten barrel, causing it to go up in flames. Perhaps robbers came in later to search the town for any abandoned goods?

Another site set on fire is the lone oil rig north of Horseshoe Overlook. There's loot and corspe with a letter from Cornwall on him. Also blue barrels. There's burned out shacks and campsites in different places on the map, with blue barrels nearby.

I don't believe the treasure map theory about Limpany, mainly because the treasure map was a pre order bonus. People like myself and I'm guessing at least 75% that didn't pre order the game, wouldn't know anything about treasure - and to be honest this is the first thing I've ever heard of the treasure map😆 So I can't see the developers putting a town in the game when most people would never be able to benefit from it, apart from the gold bar in the lock box of course. I will stick to the theory that Leviticus Cornwall was behind the attack on Limpany because he wanted the inhabitants gone so that he could prospect the land....the same way he did it to the Indians at Wapiti. After all, I think the clues that are there, such as the barrels with Cornwall Kerosene & Tar on them are really the only clues in Limpany, and millions of us would never have seen the treasure map 👀🙄

honesly i don’t think that the lack of furniture means anything. evelyn miller’s cabin, when you burn it down, ends up with no furniture despite it having cabinets, a table and even a corpse inside. the same goes for the braithwaite manor though there is a corpse in there, at least prior to the epilogue

Maybe it's where the 3rd astroid was supposed to be but rockstar thought it was to obvius / silly but liked the concept of a burnt down town close to horse shoe so they last second changed it and added a treasure map and gold bar

So I spent 80 hours playing this game the first time and didn’t even know likpany existed 60 hours through my second play through until I saw your video about it. That said, maybe it’s time for some new content? Like a different game?

I wish they did something in red dead online with limpany as an active town with small clues here and there maybe a stranger missions in it or a blood money (Just realized that the town wasn’t finished so maybe the same thing just with the town being built and you need to help build it in missions
