Bridget's body was not found until March 22nd after a long and painstaking search. "After the conclusion of the proceedings, not a single human being, male or female, clerical or lay, would lend any assistance to give Christian burial to the body". The rumour of the egg merchant was started by Cleary in an attempt to hide what he had done. He attempted to absolve himself by saying Bridget left the house and never came back.

Dunne convinced Cleary to go to the priest. Fr. Ryan says "he saw Cleary kneeling near the altar, very nervous, and asked him into the vestry;" that Cleary "suggested going to confession, but I would not allow him, as I did not think him fit to do so!"Cleary did not give himself up. Dunne told the Parish priest so that Bridget could have a christian burial. The priests only told the police they suspected foul play even though they wouldn't have had to break the seal of the confessional.

Bridget was murdered later that night when she made a remark about Michael's mother. "Bridget Cleary, sitting there by the fire in her frock and shawl, wan and terrified, had said to her husband, "Your mother used to go with the fairies; that is why you think I am going with them." "Did my mother tell you that?" exclaimed Cleary. "She did. That she gave two nights with them," replied she. It was then that Michael Cleary put her through 'the ordeal of the bread'. I love this video. However Gahan was released because it was found that "His herbs were, perhaps, as good as much of the stuff called doctors' medicine". Fr. Ryan played a peculiar role. Cleary called both Dr. Crean and Fr. Ryan to the house on March 13th. The dr. prescribed medicine but said the illness was trivial and left. The priest, however, performed Extremunction on Bridget. On the 14th Cleary sent for the priest again but he refused to come, saying it was too soon to see Bridget again.
