This is still very alive and present in everyday life. Here in Texas today, if a neighbor turns in the name of a woman who is seeking an abortion after 6 weeks, that neighbor will receive $ 10,000.00. And the woman who is seeking an abortion can be arrested and sent to jail. Today is May 22, 2022 not the 1500's.

I am an old woman. In 1967, I became pregnant right after I graduated high school. There was no choice but to carry and birth the child. It hurt our families but most of all, my child. We have never had a normal relationship...it's almost as if she knew that I never wanted to be a mother so young. What I see now is horrifying. But the big question is why has there NEVER been any federal legislation proposed. After 49 years, nothing! I no longer donate to the cause, or vote because it's obvious the powers that have always been never meant us to have choice really. It's all bullshit, nurses need to learn abortion techniques and teach them to other women. This happened before Roe vs Wade was in place, it was known as Call Jane.

In watching this again, i love that the baths of Sulis are mentioned as I come from a Celtic tradition. These films are such a comfort in the times in which women currently find themselves in America. We are entering a dark time for women in the US, with the beginning of rights of women being removed. i honestly feel sometimes as if we are in the opening scenes of "The Handmaid's Tale". May the Goddess watch over us all.

Wonderful to read your words. this is my second viewing & I too I'm struck by what is happening in the USA today. I see the parallel as men once again try to gain elevation by destroying the autonomy of womankind. This will not happen again, not in any form.

"i honestly feel sometimes as if we are in the opening scenes of "The Handmaid's Tale"." If that is the case, when has the human race *not* been on the verge of turning into "A Handmaid's Tale"? There has been *NO* age in human history when Women have had it better, and I say that as a trained historian (FWIW). If you know of a time (a historically-documented time, that is) when the situation is better than now, I would love to hear when and where it was.

That's why we need historians such as the folks who put together this fine documentary!! Modern historians for the most part are not ideologically biased to any great extent: they pursue what REALLY happened, instead of just swallowing the "official" version of history, which is usually not all that accurate in some very important aspects. Try showing this film in schools in many parts of North America for example - you'd get parental screamings by the galore!

@@spolch9482 - The Burning Times never happened. Christians did not wage War on Paganism in The Middle Ages and did not Burn Pagans at the Stake routinely. Pagans also didn't have a Unified single Religion or consistent belief system held accross Europe. Pagan Societies also did not Treat Women as Equals to Men, only for Christians to strip women of their Rights. In fact, Women were generally given Greater Rights under Christian Societies than in Pagan Societies. Pagans also did not have a positive view toward Witchcraft, and Witches were not an integral part of Pagan Religious Practice. The idea that Women who Knew about Herbal Healing and who helped cure the sick were viewed as Witches and executed by The Church is silly nonsense. The Christians did not view Herbal Healing as Witchcraft. In fact, Medieval Christians Thought Witches did not exist. Witchcraft was more associated wit a different sort of Herbal Remedy. Namely Hallucinogenic Herbs which cause Visions. In other words, they understood Witchcraft in The Bible as Drug Use, not actual Magic. There as also no Central figure known as "The Goddess" in European Pagan Societies.

Fantastic documentary, the second in a wonderful three-part series about historic paganism and witchcraft and how they're being rediscovered in modern times. It's a pity, though, that the comments section reveals we still have a long way to go, with so many writing things like, "This is just inaccurate propaganda from feminists and New Agers." Embracing spirituality and societal ideas which honor the earth, the feminine, and strive for egalitarianism to do so has been around long before the 20th century terms of "feminism" and "New Age practices". And also, yes, the horrible things in this documentary did indeed happen and they need to be addressed. Those who come up with conspiracies to avoid accepting it are the ones, ironically, spreading propaganda. May the souls of all who perished in the Burning Times now be recovering toward healing and peace, may the souls of those who accused and persecuted them be learning better and to forgive themselves, and may all who come to this documentary with open hearts and minds be blessed on whatever path they walk. Blessed be. + )O(

And I agree that there's absolutely a difference between being a Christian and being a member of one of Christianity's fundamentalist churches, Catholic or Protestant. While there can be some lovely Christian churches and individuals, the great hypocrisies in others are what made me eventually leave the religion altogether. And, funnily enough, I find now as a practicing Wiccan that there are many more Christ-like people in the Pagan/New Age communities than the people whose religion bears his name.

As for Muslims, only the extremists obviously are the "Behead anybody who's not like us" types, just like the craziest Christians were/are the ones calling for supposed witches to be hanged or burned. I also, as a Catholic Christian, found it interesting when they talked about people embracing the Christian faith while practicing the old traditions. That's actually part of a story I'm working on right now so finding this documentary was perfect.

Merry Meet!! I too, follow both paths, both as a Pagan and as a bishop in my church, Thankfully I am left in peace to worship as I please--I've never received any hassle from the other bishops. Being lesbian and a monastic, I see Christ as my Bride (the Bridgegroom will NOT work for me). Ironically, I found the following in the writings of a very traditional Orthodox bishop (he has since been canonized). This is the passage, which I remember clearly, even almost thirty years after reading it: "If women who wish to dedicate their lives to Christ can call Him their Bridegroom, why cannot men who wish to do similarly call Her their Bridegroom?" This really opened doors for me (thank you St. John). And another of his statement also broadened my horizons: "in actuality God is not any gender". So he has helped to make following a dual path much easier. Ironically, I was started on this path by my bishop at the time who suggested for me to read up on the great Mother. I think it was a way for him to blow off my (IMO) very pertinent criticisms of the Orthodox Church's misogyny. I did follow his advice and it led me to where I am today. If you wonder about my veiling, I am in Great Schema and I also veil in honour of the Crone. I am glad to see I am not the only one following a dual path! Merry Part!

There may be a few people alive today who actually went through this. I've seen several references stating that witchcraft was banned in the third Reich. But none of them say if the nazis actually took any action regarding this. As trigger happy as the nazis were, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the SS hunted down pagans. This could easily be overshadowed by the enormous crimes the nazis committed, such as the invasion of the Soviet Union and the holocaust. This could have been a useful tool for the nazis to wipe out the cultures of the lands they invaded, such as the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, and even Russia. It's definitely something to look into. As an aside, it seems at least possible that the Soviets might have been involved in witch hunting as well more as a side effect of their general totalitarianism. And let's not forget many Trump supporters want to bring back the inquisition as well.

The first thing to be clear about is that it was Christianity who condemned the word 'witch'; otherwise, it was one of the most respected words, as respected as 'mystic' - a wise man. It simply meant a wise woman, the parallel to a wise man. But in the Middle Ages, Christianity came to face a danger. There were thousands of women who were far wiser than the bishops and the cardinals and the pope. They knew the art of transforming people's lives. Their whole philosophy was based on love and transformation of sexual energy - and a woman can do that more easily than a man. After all, she is a mother and she is always a mother. Even a small baby girl has the quality of motherliness. The quality of motherliness is not something connected with age, it is part of womanhood. And the transformation needs a very loving atmosphere, a very motherly transfer of energies. To Christianity, it was a competitor. Christianity has nothing to offer in comparison to it - but Christianity was in power. It was a man's world up to then; and they decided to destroy all witches. But how to destroy them? It was not a question of killing one woman but thousands of women. So a special court was created for enquiry, to find out who was a witch. Any woman said by Christians to have had an influence on people and who people respected was caught and tortured - so much so, that she had to confess. They wouldn't stop torturing her until she confessed that she was a witch. And according to the Christian mind, to Christian theology, the meaning of witch was changed: a witch is one who is having a sexual relationship with the devil. You don't hear any more of any devil having a relationship with any woman. Either the devil has become a Christian monk, a celibate, or... what has happened to the devil? Who was it that was having sexual relationships with thousands of women? And these women were mostly old women. It doesn't seem to be rational. When young and beautiful women were available, why should the devil go to the old, the very old women? But to become a witch, it was a long training, a long discipline, a long experience. So by the time a woman was a witch - a wise woman - she was old; she had sacrificed everything to attain that wisdom, that alchemy. They forced these poor old women into saying that they were having sexual intercourse with the devil. Many of them tried hard... but the torture was too much. When my back had gone bad, Devaraj and other sannyasins trained in bodywork started traction on me. And I enquired, "What is traction? How was it invented?" They had no idea. It was invented in the Middle Ages by Christians to torture the witches - to pull their bodies from both ends and to go on pulling to a point where it became unbearable. Many became unconscious; many died on their traction machine. But, by the way, it was found that many old women who were put into traction had had a back problem; when they got out of it, the back problem had disappeared. So now Christians don't use it, but doctors do. Now it is part of the medical world. They tortured these women in many ugly ways, just for one thing: they should confess. The women continued to try to say that they had nothing to do with the devil, that there was nothing to confess. But nobody listened to them; they went on torturing them. You can make anybody confess anything if you go on torturing him. A point comes when he feels it is better to confess rather than to unnecessarily suffer the same torture every day. And it would have continued for his whole life. Once a woman confessed that she was a witch and was having a sexual relationship with the devil, her torture was stopped and then she was presented before a court - a special court made by the pope - and before the court she was to now confess. And once she confessed before the court, the court was able to punish her - because it is the greatest crime in the eyes of Christianity. In fact, even if the woman was having a sexual relationship with the devil, it is none of the business of anybody else - and it is not a crime, because she is not harming anybody. And the devil has never complained to any police station, "That woman is dangerous." On what authority was Christianity burning these women? The only punishment was to be burned alive so that no other woman dared to be a witch again. They destroyed thousands of women and completely removed a very significant part of humanity. And the wisdom that those women contained - their books, their methods, their techniques of transforming man, transforming man's energy.... So the first thing to be understood is: don't think that witch is a bad word. It is more respectable than 'pope' - because I don't think a pope is a man who can be called wise; they are just parrots and nothing else. It is possible that it may be connected with your past life, and the wound has been so deep that still some remembrance in your unconscious goes on reminding you. And that creates the hate for men, because what was done to you was done by men. So it is a simple association, but that association has to be dropped. It was not done by men, it was done by Christians. And the Christians have done so many crimes, and they go on doing them. It is unbelievable. -by Osho

There never were any witches, there were only women! They burned women, not witches. The procecusion of women, rooted in the Old European Culture (enduring until 450 in Scandinavia), already started in patriarchal era, which in Scandinavia was the Late, 2nd Pagan Era of the Vikings(Odin and Thor) ....

Here's an example of the mind-set of the people in those days: > The KJV was 'authorized' by the same guy that wrote 'Daemonologie,' just a few years previous to this bible's release. #NorthBerwickWitchTrials #KingJames King James I: the king who hunted witches. The witch-hunts that swept across Europe from 1450 to 1750 were among the most controversial and terrifying phenomena in history - holocausts of their times. #religion #ignorance

The christians to gain hold over pagans ,wiccans, and others would make up a holiday next to a pagan or wiccan sabbat and then say we watched your celebration now come see ours. For instance they put easter next to esther and halloween next to all saints day and yule is right before when they say christ was born. The bell book and candle from witchcraft was adopted into the christian faith. Many witches would use mary as the goddess and jesus as the pagan god in the old days. If you research the different beliefs you will see that Christianity cam from zorosterism where the snake god is good. I know you did not ask for this but it is yours because of your last sentence you wrote. Blessed Be

+silversobe yes some religions have this effect when not balanced in theory, fact and spirituality . The interpretation that people lend to scripture is not always accurate. Religion also offers comfort, aid and support to many on many levels. Knowledge too satisfies are love of learning , information, order curiosity. Therefore respect for this is essential to our humanity too.

I have done more than read the bible,.. i have read many great works of literature that explore religion,, Watched many films based on stories or investigation of this ideology+spirituality..,,Art on ceilings++ was inspired by this religion. Reveals more. In fact all these works of human expression would never have been written, produced if the authors had not studied or resourced the bible... In the past some of these literary works , including discussions on atheism,,, arose because of the bible,, Ideologies and opposition to them live as a healthy exploration of all we may be and what we may think and feel. ..When religion grows extreme in the interpretation or crusades through streets as a conqueror ,,, turns into a force for the combative or a convenient escape, an opium ,, over an expression or comfort, aid to balance, good works, then we know we are faulted as individuals and a society for turning so easily towards a false sense of what religion is meant to do for us. There are always those who will prey on belief systems for personal gain,, use religion as a vehicle for their own machinations. Escaping too fully down the path of dreams, faith ,,,usually occurs when hope is floundering. When a complex series of hits takes it toll on us. There are people that live to take advantage of this. YIKes. But then Recently Harry Potter only got taken out of schools. Some even removed this work from shelves...We spoke and protested in return and changes in thought came about. Yes, it was frightening though.. but then better to be a watchtower and voice than an abolitionist/silencer/cleanser that removes Christian and Islam faiths from the world. This is not a love of knowledge approach at all. No, i am not Christian and much of what I have seen and heard of the Koran makes me feel we need to be so vigilant,,, no trust, guarded. I resent this and hope that those of that faith will fight with us rather than push harder ,, all religions must evolve for the people.for the good. But then like-minded people are allowed to gather around a peaceful idea and protest as long as there is no condemning or racism,, otherwise we become the very thing we want to stop,,, Knowledge comes in many packages. ,,,some happen to be religious,,, I hope this is enough for you.

Yeah, a lot of this documentary seems to be more artistic than historical, they make very generalized statements about things that happened over thousands of years and continents, and you can't see their sources. Another thing that is just incorrect is them portraying the Iron Maiden as a torture device in use when it was a 19th century invention never actually used .In short, some of what they say could be correct, but don't trust something just because it's in a documentary and spoken in an educated sound twangy voice

So sad!! It's disgusting what happend back then. Especially because those who accused, tortured and burned or killed those 'witches' because they 'worshipped the devil' and therefore must be killed. But they don't even believe in god or satan. So how can they even be evil worshippers?! They were good, their goal was to help people and do other kinds of good things. But the worst thing is that even innocent people started to also get accused. I just don't know what to say about it. Now I truly see christianity as an wrong and destructive religion. Even though nowadays they act as if that's not the case. No matter how much they will try to cover all of this up, I'm sure it'll never be forgotten, and that it will never be possible to cover all of this up completely.

@Tina Hassani Thank you for looking into it. I would love giving you history on a plate, and say : this happened it's that. And I could, but I come to my conclusions to this, and it is you who needs to be convinced yourself. I can however give you things to look into and encourage you to draw conclusions from that. Even if we might end up not agreeing, at least I shared my views on it. :) History isn't given to us people specific, it goes trough patterns. If history got written specific and it would all be 100% dead on truth, many history books would never become published. I know that trough looking into history. And I am not a historian, but I can see patterns and connect dots. And I'm not the only one looking into history this way. Well, you know, Witches were not only female. Where I am from, people got burned to the stake if they didn't convert to the cross and bow down for the yaweh. And yaweh, if you look it up, that's a foreign thing for us. Our days and countries are even named after goddesses and gods. Maybe if you look up the "salem" witch trials. You might have gotten the hint with "salem" what's in the middle east and has the same sort of name? The letter is about a genocide of the indigenous people. the "men of a hostile faith" are those who are not of ours because they are loyal to...(see :yaweh) Tho we were told a lot that we were "sinful savages who didn't know anything and stuff" before they came to convert us. Alarm bells should ring in your mind thinking about isis etc.. There's no honor in gender division, it's totally foreign to me. We're both needed to make the future. And we live trough our children. And our ancestors run trough our blood. We celebrate our ancestors (blood) and we celebrate our nature (soil). The problem is, many people are being fooled into thinking like foreigners and they don't value things that our ancestors and Radegund held so dear. And the thinking like foreigners makes it very difficult to get back to our natural way of living.
