An outgrowth of a failed early attempt at a small-bore PDW the Arm Pistol failed to do anything useful except putting Bushmaster on the map.

I remember seeing this featured in SOF back in the day and scratching my head then.

At least they finally started giving pilots AR's. I've talked to a Vietnam era helicopter pilot who traded ARVN for an M2 carbine that he promptly cut down to something akin to an Enforcer and wore in a thigh holster. He said that you basically just had to keep them back long enough for the rest of your flight to get to you. I can't help but think that was the mindset behind this. It would be a completely different weapon full auto in .221- instinctive firing bullet hose....

Good lord. I started laughing at the "ambidextrous safety" comment and pretty much laughed the whole way through. Way cool discussion piece!

I always thought the old M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon was close to ideal for it's intended purpose.

“It has a certain kind of appeal… until you fire it!” Unfortunately that describes several of my choices like American and Bond arms derringers and my Seecamp. I remember hearing about these “geewizbang” things from my youth and now know to avoid them like the plague they are! Thanks for video and PSA!

Properly addressing a bench grinder to it and it might just be a pretty good ax...or not.

I went to school with a guy that had one and it rarely ran 10 rounds without a jam. He loved for its weirdness but nothing he did would make it run well

Thats intreasting, because I have a friend that has one of these, and it rarely jammed, I even got to shoot atleast 100 rounds before it jammed, so I can only assume your friend used poor quality rounds...

@@Gloverfield The ammo was American made good ammo. His gun was purchased as soon as it became available and that may be why it was more prone to problems.

@@frankbrowning328That explains it. However some American manifacturers still made poor quality bullets back then especially if you buy the cheapest versions, which could be a contributer to jaming...

I'm old enough to remember that when Bushmaster was mentioned, THIS was what we were talking about. And you were supposed to pin the stock to your forearm with your thumb, no shoulder contact. Really weird.

Rejected, in part, because it was too good a weapon, and might convince downed aircrews to fight... Yep, that sounds like military/ government thinking. As a teen, I remember seeing this illustrated and described in the classic, seminal tome, 'Small Arms of the World'. Never knew the receiver rotated to get that offset to the magazine, though.

I bought one many years ago. Top charging handke but the M16/AR safety behind the pistol grip, in the usual location for the AR fire control components. It does not have the "adjustable" rear sight. But rather a stamped plate with a sling loop (much like the front loop) with a notch cut into the top left corner. Mine functions most of the time. But refuses to accept anything but USGI metal 30 round magazines. Not even the USGI metal 20 round mags fit. Forget about even trying to get a modern polymer mag to go in. It's a turd. But l agree it had some potential, IF a whole lot more R&D $$$$ had been sunk into it. AR pistols are a thing anymore and this is a bullpup 5.56mm pistol that is not on the AR platform. Cool idea, poor execution.

I'm sure this looked as good on paper as it does in a pic(super lite and compact, semi auto and takes stanag mags) but it was the execution of it's manufacture that fell short. Although I think the M6 .22/.410 over under was really a great aircrew weapon for wilderness survival for that purpose but it was useless for defense whereas something like this would be much better and then you shot it like a pistol and realized, wow that's a dumb design This was supposed to be a really chunky bull pup pistol? I picture you shooting from the shoulder but then that ejection port would be a real problem It needs a brass deflector, some kind of extension or slide out sleeve to use as a buttstock and at least a sling on the front swivel to use as a vertical front grip Audie Murphy style and be shot like a carbine with the butt against the shoulder (it would need different sights ) otherwise it looks pretty useless for being practical and effective.

I've always thought they looked neat. I have a Foxtrot Mike 5.56 (buffer tube less) pistol that I'll bullpup someday to make a modern version of this. If lasers were a thing, small and reliable when this was being developed that would have been the way to shoot it from the hip.

If you use old school 20 rd metal mags,, and pinch the receiver against the forearm with the off hand it is much more reliable and shootable. It will reliably hit a man sizedtarget to 150 yards with the cheese sights. Mine sports a red dot and a laser and is very usable. BTW, they are back in production.

What the Air Force should have done was simply issue M-1 carbines in the paratrooper configuration. It would have been a little more bulky but a lot more useful.
