The only way to grasp and understand Cairo trilogy , one needs to be from Egypt or that part of world . The book is superb and it’s almost watching a movie

I particularly liked The Cairo Trilogy because I see it as part of a literary tradition/genre called in German the Bildungsroman. It's very much like Thomas Mann's Buddensbrooks. I was certain Mahfouz must have been influenced by Mann. But your review was excellent.

Thanks so much! He was certainly influenced by Proust and now that you mention Thomas Mann, I can see that. But here is what all three have in common, they all read Henri Bergson the French philosopher of time.

Thanks you for your job and beautiful words. It's amazing knowing the opinion of this trilogy from an Egyptian. I am doing the very first analys of the first book of the trilogy in Spanish on KZbin, the very first one. It was a very funny that Al-Jawad need a colombian mother xDDD

I'm glad you found it useful. The Colombian grandma was in reference to Ursula in 100 Years of Solitude who would often spank her sons even though they were army generals. :)

@@Fiction_Beast yes, I got it. I'm chilean and 100 years of Solitude is a classic in Latinamerica as you know. 😅👐 but also I can say to you, that every single mother I like that, there are not Amina around here.

@@LibrosyTrascendencia Amina is too passive and sacrificial. I really wanted an older woman who would spank her husband

Great video and thought provoking comments. I've just starting my fiction writing journey and absorbing as much knowledge, hints and tips as possible along the way. I seem to have unconciously decided upon writing a Trilogy, which i dont have the skills or experience to self-challenge my choice ...yet! For this reason, I found this video had an additional informative element for me, though I do have an unanswered question of what criteria seperates each book in the Trilogy? Im going to buy the books and gather my own information, but appreciate any thoughts and advice in the meantime.

I wish you had used more images of modern Egypt instead of Ancient Egyptian imagery. It doesnt fit the plot of the story wich has a strongly muslim context.

Someone else also pointed this too. I didn’t realize the confusion my images may cause. Sorry about that. I was merely trying to hide my hideous face behind the Sphinx and the pyramids. Thank you for the feedback.

Arab in the language sense? What does that even mean? Would writing in French make me a Frenchman? He was either an Arab or he wasn't.

It’s been a year so I don’t recall the exact point you’re trying to make. Can you elaborate?

I think he means because Naguib Mahfouz is the only Arab to win a Nobel prize in literature for an Arabic book. Maybe he’s counting Abdulrazak Gurnah, who won a Nobel prize in literature for an English book? I’m not quite sure though

Egyptians are native arab speakers (Egyptian arabic ) but we're not arabs as ethnicity

Hi there - Here are my two cent comments. The trilogy has been made into movies. The plot and the characters are depicted against certain historic eras in the history of Egypt symbolized by the three generation of Abdul Jawad's family. The family is portrayed against the backdrop of the Islamic tradition which gives all rights to men and none to women. However, with time, the Egyptian society was being influenced by western modernity and the old tradition was giving way to some wester values where women were allowed to study and work. However, pre-marital sex remains a taboo punishable by death, as portrayed in another novel by Naguib Mehfouh. One last remark, current Egypt is solely Islamic and as such is not related to Pharoic Egypt which ceased to exist after the Roman invasion close to the 1st century.
