That was never confirmed, but they were pushing that story. I asked somebody else who was defending her (and I don't even know what there is to defend about JuJu) what records has she broken. He couldn't answer, he just knew she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. She's only broken 1 NCAA record, the fastest to reach 1,000 points and that was only by 2 days (38 vs 40 days before). That's it. As a sophomore, every record she's broken has basically been team records or division records, but not NCAA records. JuJu might be impressive now that Caitlin is out of the NCAA, but she has a long way to go to catch up with Caitlin. She has 50 MORE college records to break and only 2 years left to do it. Personally, she should chase her own career path and I hope she doesn't let anybody push her into trying to compete with Caitlin.

That business about Angel Reese helping Caitlin Clark achieve great notoriety is a bunch of BS. Clark already had great notoriety, crowds to capacity wherever Iowa played. Reese didn't do the hand gesture until the championship game, the last game of the junior season for both of them; so Reese having any effect on Clark's junior year is absolutely impossible. After the had gesture some fans roasted Reese but what did she think would happen? I'm sure it never crossed her mind. When Clark was asked about the hand gesture in a post-game interview she said that Reese shouldn't be criticized. But, fans will be fans. If Reese had done the hand gesture to someone on a team other than Iowa, Reese would have gotten roasted as well. Was the backlash more severe because it was Clark? You bet, not only was Clark well liked, I'd say she was beloved by the fans. There was very little talk about the hand gesture during Clark's senior year. The fervor around the hand gesture only started to heat up again when March Madness approached. The talk was that the only way for LSU and Iowa to play again, was if they both made it to the Elite Eight. They did and Iowa won. So again, your theory that Reese is responsible for Clark's notoriety in any way is trash. Reese tried to ignite a big rivalry with Clark in the WNBA, but she was the only one trying. If you listen to Clark's replies whenever asked by the media about the rivalry, you'll see that Clark downplays any rivalry with Reese. Reese did done nothing but ride Clark's coat tails until she decided to be a podcaster and limelight, i.e., nightlife, seeker. It seems that Reese mentions Clark in a lot of the things she says or writes.

I really like watching JuJu, and think she will be quite the draw eventually. Paige, as well. The sport, in general, will continue to draw larger crowd sizes as people mature in their viewpoint of the women's game. That being said, there's something that Clark had and has that might not be able to be repeated. It makes her different, and since she is/was "the first"...she attracted many fans who latched onto her, and they'll continue to follow her first. What is this attribute? It's hard to describe, but I'll try. Most great players in the WNBA and in the women's college game, have a "typical game style"...I don't want to downplay it, so don't come at me saying I'm hating. I'm not. That style is muscle it to the rim, pull up for a mid 2 or the occasional 3-pointer. In my opinion, Caitlin's style of play is different than this...and she's really the only one who has mastered it: Logo 3's, then utilize every single player on her team as precision instruments with assists, only taking it to the rim if the first two fail. A typical point guard will make a play and pass the ball, but CC's style is different because of her BB IQ. A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, even Sabrina Ionescu, DT, all have this familiar style of play. It's fine, but it's not as exciting to watch for the average (casual) fan. Caitlin's fast pace, combined with her phenom playmaking and utilization of even an average team of players, just makes her unique. JuJu, Paige, any of the players coming up from college to the pros are also masters of this usual style of play. Caitlin's really the only one that's different. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy watching the next group of players, but as a casual women's basketball fan (which isn't a dirty or bad term,) Caitlin caught my attention because of how different she is.

@grb02417 күн бұрын
@micdewitt It’s really more the combination of deep 3’s and the utilization of the rest of the team. When Caitlin gets the ball from a stop, we’re all waiting to see what happens next. Most point getters are running down court to get the ball from a teammate, not launching a quarterback pass to an average teammate who happens to run fast. Caitlin to Fagbenle, then Caitlin to Boston or Mitchell. In college it was Caitlin to Czenano. She was getting 30+ pts a game but still making the rest of her team look like superstars. One could argue that that’s not the role of most in the league, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s thrilling to watch.

@kenkaplan36549 күн бұрын
If you look at their freshman stats there is no comparison.. Clark's efficiency was miles better than Watkins in every offensive category. Plus Clark had double the assists Watkins had and only one RB less per game. In her last 5 games Watkins is averaging 29% from 3, and was 31% for her freshman year. She is an outstanding player and adds much to the game. She is not Caitlin Clark who was in serious MVP consideration in her rookie year.
@micdewitt5 күн бұрын
to be fair to both (and I don't even like this because CC's my top dog, but truth is truth), I never compare a PG's assists to a SG/W's. CC gets more assists, Juju gets more blocks and stls, they both are 1 and 2 in freshman scoring. 8 games into her sophomore season CC was at 22.3 pts, 7 assts, 1.5 stls .5 blocks, 39.1% FG (58/148) and 25.9% from 3 (21/81), team was 6-2. Lost to Duke, Celeste Taylor was the best player on their team and on the floor that night. Lost to Iowa St, remember the Joens sisters. It wasn't until game 15 vs Minnesota when Caitlin's 3 pt shot started clicking even though she did put 44 against Evansville. It was right after the loss to IUPUI, she was 6/16, 1/7 from 3 in that one with 19 pts. Finished the year at 45% from the field and 33% from 3. 2nd round exit to Creighton, 15 pts 11 assists, 1/9 from 3. You're right CC's efficiency was better freshman but volume plays a part and Juju avg 4 more attempts. This season she is down to the 18 attempts that CC averaged in her freshman and junior season. She's at 47% from the field and 38% from 3. CC's freshman and junior years she was 47% from the field both seasons, 40% (fr) and 38% (jr) from 3. Watkins was on the mid-season watch list and was a finalist for the Naismith award last season as well. Caitlin leveled up at the end of her jr year and then all senior year, IDK if Juju goes on that type of run to end her college career but it would be more fun to see that the next few years then to keep looking at Geno and Staley win with 3 potential starters on their bench.

Media needs to cool down on trying to force a superstar to immediately after Caitlin. Caitli didn’t get widespread recognition until making a great tournament run in 2023 playing her best games on the national stage in the elite 8 and final four. If Caitlin got hard promoted after her freshman year, her second round upset loss to creighton would have had so many say bust.

I said the same thing about the Creighton loss, it wasn't a big deal because the recognition didn't come until the accomplishments, but we can't temper down the pub that they're giving the game just because it's in a different place then it was 4 years ago. She should have been getting more recognition earlier. But shoe companies weren't signing high school players then. Hardly signed college NCAAW players. They had limited or no crowds for a season, there were no NIL deals...it was all different then.

And agreed on Ju Ju; just let her play and quit trying to use her to support whatever agenda it is you're running up the flag pole. If it's so important to a certain faction of people that she be better than Clark, and it's so important to Clark fan that nobody can even be mentioned in the same breath as CC, then let her graduate from USC in peace and go start her professional career. I just don't get why some people are so defensive about the fact that college basketball still has to market and push its current players. We're hearing a lot about up and coming players because of Caitlin Clark. I have nothing bad to say about those players, but I'm getting the sense the gatekeepers and influencers and trend setters are trying to catch lightning in a bottle by promoting them. Clark's following came about organically. The fans chose her. And keep in mind, her first two years at Iowa there were no people in the stands because of COVID. So the shine built up in two seasons.
@micdewitt15 күн бұрын
@@Struwwel2 when ppl compare the attendance, viewership numbers they tend to forget about those first two seasons (using tv viewership the 1st year, tv and attendance after), and use the height of her popularity to compare them to where they are now. Some of the conversations I’m having about Juju now I was having about Clark then. They’d say Paige is the real deal, Clark’s lucky she got injured, see she lost in the 2nd round, wait til Page gets back…even when she was in the Final Four you still had analysts saying Paige is the better all around player, Caitlin is just in Clark-centric offense. Even after the fans chose her. In Juju’s case they chose her too. Ppl saying Hannah Hidalgo is underrated, deserves more shine, but they were co-MVPs in the McDonald’s All American game. They’ve always been 1A/1B. The fans just followed Juju earlier because USC was her home state, underdog school that she revived with 3 Ivy League transfers so Elite 8 was a surprise. Plus 51 pts, popped out, freshman scoring record, the Bun becoming a thing added some marketability. Notre Dame even without Miles was already recognized as a top team with Wesbeld and Citron two future WNBA players out there with Hannah, and they ended at the Sweet 16. Ppl got to see Juju go shot for shot with Paige in that next round, as a freshman. That’s organic. You aren’t wrong with the lightning in the bottle part, they’re trying to push everybody more. But as far who they’re pushing, that’s all being determined by what they do on the court, and how fans respond.

@micdewitt2 күн бұрын
@@you2449 for a lot of Clark’s and Angel Reese’s fans, that’s the case. But there were also already a record-breaking amount of ppl watching that game from the beginning, Before the chase down hand wave from Reese even happened. It only blew up like that, in my opinion, because it happened in the championship game with 9.9 Million ppl tuned in, one round after Iowa beat South Carolina. As big as Iowa is, SC has remained tops in attendance and has always gotten views. If they hadn’t broke up SC’s undefeated season the round prior, and if Clark hadn’t waved off Raven Johnson in that game and it became a talking point to where Reese mentioned “those are my SEC girls, you aren’t going to disrespect them” so she just kind of made herself the avatar for everybody rooting against Clark. Then Jill Biden invited Iowa to the White House despite losing, ppl chose sides and dug in when they saw the clip you referenced and it got bigger. But before any of that with Reese, Iowa vs South Carolina is what really sparked it. SC had to have that dominant run first, Iowa had to end it, Clark had to have a “signature” celebration or emote that ppl knew about, and THEN comes Angel to play antagonist
@micdewitt2 күн бұрын
@@you2449 and if we just look at those numbers: 18.7 million watched Iowa vs SC in the championship game this year 14.2 million watched Iowa vs UConn in the Final Four this year 12.3 M watched Iowa vs LSU in the Elite 8 this year Highest watched WNBA games were 2.3 Million Indy vs Chicago, twice. So there’s undeniably some interest there in Caitlin vs Angel, but the magnitude of the NCAA tournament itself especially those later rounds, will bring the eyes. CC had Paige, Juju has Hannah Hidalgo. They both had SC to go through. Idk that she’ll ever have an Angel Reese situation, but more important than that imo, is you need as many rooting against you as you have rooting for you. Worked for Floyd, it’s working for Caitlin, and even working for Angel. I think Juju has that already. It just disappoints me that it’s mostly from my fellow CC fans. She’s not out there neck-popping, taunting, or flaunting anything but basketball and hrs in the gym. We saw how the W acted last season and all say we can’t wait for this new wave of players to come in after CC and change the vibe, raise the professionalism. One player alone can’t do it, and their stats and stories won’t be the same. Imagine if Curry had to have the same stats and storyline as LeBron to be great, and vice/versa.

The only player who tried to make it a rivalry was Reese in 2023. Caitlin was already drawing big crowds before that player. Los Angeles is not about basketball??? 28 NCAA titles for the women alone? California, the state of the LA Lakers and the Clippers? That's the most disingenuous set arguments we've seen in months. Stats wise, no comparison. Attendance wise, no comparison. Basketball fandom base between the state of the Lakers and Iowa? No comparison. Caitlin proved her worth right from the beginning in a MUCH weaker team, in a much weaker school. Same thing that put Juju on the map. Losing in the championship game and then coming back for a second swing at it IS a storyline. I could already stop now but no, let's keep going I said WOMEN'S basketball, and the amount of titles don't help your argument. All those titles yet UCLA and USC don't nearly sell out while Iowa AND Iowa St do? Both teams ranked higher than the Iowa teams and STILL don't sell out while Iowa and Iowa St do? You shouldn't even have commented LOL The state of the Lakers, vs the state of the Hawkeyes. Again, you're making my case for me, I don't even have to do anything here Caitlin's team was not much weaker just because you say so. Juju played with 4 Ivy league transfers that were never on anybody's draft boards. They played their way into the rankings, just Caitlin and Iowa her 1st year I give facts, I haven't diminshed anything. Here's another fact, Cailtin and Iowa were 1-9 against top 25 teams and lost in the sweet 16 her first year. Juju dropped 51 on #4 Stanford, broke the freshman scoring record AND the freshman tournament scoring record. She's already a great player, she doesn't need fake hope from somebody that clearly doesn't want to acknowledge that. Dumbass comment

They both have it, but Clark has more. She has always gotten the crowd up. It will just be hard for her. And I heard someone call her the next Micheal Jordan. That is not helping her. That's what I don't get, we're seeing in real time with Hannah Hidalgo how a game that was watched by everybody, and she really only played decent by her standards, just took her name recognition up 30x, organically. The same thing happened last season when Juju dropped 51 on #4 Stanford with all eyes on Cam Brink and Kiki Iriafen looking like a title contender. And her team was #15 at the time, so it was a lot bigger of an upset. It's not media driven, it's performance first. Now you don't even hear Paige's name much. And before, well Geno mostly, had her the next best player. And she can play just like all of them. One thing that Clark has over all of them is other players want to play with her because sh is not selfish with the ball and know that if they get open she can and will get it to them. The others do to but they just don't see players open before they even know they are. Floor game is as good as anyone in basketball. Anyone. Now she is hitting the gym and getting stronger. I seen it on one of her com, commericials, She just looked a little bit bigger and kinda ripped and still has what 6 months before the season. Not playing in Unrivaled was, I believe so she could get stronger and maybe faster. She is only 22, she is a long from her prime as an athlete. I seen Juju play and man she is fast and physical, and like one of the socials said, not bad to look at either. I know that should not matter, but be real it does. I love her humility also, Not on the floor, but off the floor. That is a quality that will only help her get paid. Yep she will get PAID. Sponsors will throw money if they haven't already. She has 2&1/2 years left in college where there are MORE eyes than in the pros. So quit trying to pit these women against each other. And If Angel would quit saying ME ME ME she could get more, however she is not in the same as the others. Her game is old school and that is not what the new fan come to see. She is good at it it, but not as exciting and doesn't translate to superstar. Just the way it is. I was wrong”

If she really said that, her stock just went way down. Reese isn't even in the same universe as Clark. But I get it.

When she said “As of right now, I got Angel…” Angel deserved that praise. She jumped into the league ready to go, while Caitlin as a point guard and floor general had a longer transition period. Facts. Juju called it as she saw it, props to her.

@@micdewittIf you watch early games Mitchell was NOT passing balls to Clark. She and Smith seemed to be excluding Clark. It turned me off to her at first.

@@colleenposadas8415 Mitchell is a scorer. Always has been, and she missed training camp so the best thing you can do is let a player play their game until you get time to practice and incorporate everybody

If you are a real basketball lover, you count the defensive side of the ball too. I like the video, but neither the video in side this video or the poster mentioned defense once! Players like Candace Parker played both sides of the ball! Until you talk about COMPLETE BASKETBALL SKILLS OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE, this is just Fanatics trying to take over the sport basketball.

There's nothing wrong with new fans, who don't understand proper footwork or know the fundamentals of strong defense. The game and these leagues have to grow somehow, and new fans (not fanatics) have to be attracted to something. I'm a new fan to women's basketball, but I've followed men's basketball since the Magic/Bird days. The women have always had a different "style of play", because they're not slamming dunks in their opponents faces. A finish around the rim for the women's game is a layup. Nothing wrong with that, but they're not as exciting as Caitlin's logo threes or her finding that average player who's running fast to the rim on a transition play.

She's been light on defense since Iowa and it's kept her out of foul trouble. You can't have your player who's putting up 30- and 40-point triple-doubles sitting on the bench for fouls. It's just one more facet of the game. Look how well it's worked. #1 draft pick.

@@BigJasonHenderson 247sports.com/college/oregon/article/oregon-womens-basketball--128568129/ growth has been happening for a while now. 7,200 at Oregon is big. Iowa St was #2 in attendance for a decade. Still packing them out even with Iowa doing the same now. USC was just averaging under 1000 per game for years, went to over 3 last year, now they’re getting 5k to watch them play Cal Poly. I think conference play will bring a few more in. South Carolina and Iowa/Iowa St have at the top for a while now in attendance. They’re college states. Galen Center was a graveyard.

In that article they mention that Oregon went from 1600, to 2500, to 4200, to 6400 per game in a 4 yr span. USC is up from 1k to 3k last year (and in all honesty, the UCLA sellout skews those numbers, it was lower than that per every other game) and already tracking higher than that before the UCLA visit. In a tougher conference with more ranked teams like Ohio St, MI, Michigan St visiting. I’d be surprised if they didn’t average 5500 this year if they’re getting 3000 vs CSUN

First of all, Juju is not the face of college basketball, There is a marketing push , no more no less. Ju just is a great player, but quit pushing the false narrative Racism has absolutely nothing to do with Caitlin’s career, The racism crap needs to stop

and I ask this to really get your perspective, because we all have very different ones and I don't take that for granted. For example, there's a comment from earlier today where someone says they didn't know about Caitlin until they played LSU. I was watching her in AAU and on FIBA teams before Iowa so I can't argue with how they see it. I didn't realize how many ppl didn't know about Hannah Hidalgo either until they kept saying she was overlooked. I'm like "she's 1 of 5 All Americans last year, overlooked by who?". She's been that since high school. Same with Juju, she's been talked about since 7th and 8th grade, her high school games were on ESPN, she didn't disappoint. Was MVP on Team USA u17, co-MVP at McDonald's. Then broke the freshman scoring record so when ppl say it's marketing, I'm confused becaused I've watched it bubble for 5-6 years before it blew up

I’ve been involved in a professional sport either as a competitive athlete and a promotion and event organizer for about 40 years, I also have worked in addition in the television and film industry for much of that time Juju is certainly worthy of recognition, however, if she was from Tennessee or Mississippi or any other mid American team would she be on sports media as she is now My answer is no New York and Los Angeles media virtually dominate media I see the media desperately trying to create a narrative Nothing at all about despairing to juju intended

@ got you. Yes coming up in LA had its advantages because of the obvious reasons, also the basketball community there is tight knit so you get Gilbert Arenas, Derozan, Westbrook, Lisa Leslie etc at your games by middle school. Playing with a lot of pros and ex pros’ kids, big prep schools that everyone gathers to watch. No question there’s some area code jackpot there, I was talking about that with someone off-channel. Being in commercials with Bron’s kids wouldn’t have happened somewhere else, signed to Klutch early, they film the doc series that’s on Peacock. Definitely some LA Magic working for her. Against her when it comes to crowds, but yeah you’d rather be Gatorade POY in CA than here in Wisconsin for sure
