“Sound” is the most important feature to tell trumpeter swans from tundra swans. A juvenile trumpeter swan (less than a year old) has a call that is higher pitched than an adult trumpeter swan. Juveniles are not yet fully grown. Even their trachea, which forms the sound, is not fully grown into its special shape and length. You can recognize juvenile swans because of their gray feathers. This video captures the call of a juvenile trumpeter swan that hatched the summer before.
