everyone is afraid to use references, but let's be honest, but we always do so much better when we finally cave! also, women come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, its hard to say there's any right or wrong way of depicting women; in fact, only trying to do soft, feminine faces all the time usually runs the risk of doing the same face over and over, which you put far too much care into your work to resort to! but in this case, you were aiming for a softer look, and i'd say you got it! anyway, she came out wonderfully, you absolutely captured the intimate, candid feeling you were going for. she's got this air of calm concentration about her, too. its really impressive how well you capture little abstract details like that!
@ArtChongArt3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah I agree about faces, which is probably why I was so resistant to doing the soft feminine face to begin with... since it's what almost everyone defaults to. I'm glad you think I actually got it right (this time) :)

All that to say, I think I know what you mean... it can be scary to try to put your ideas into reality. I often wonder what the art work says about me as a person. Of course it never leads me anywhere good. All I can do is just give it a shot and if it works it works if it doesn't hopefully I learned something from it. I would like to get into sculpting some day, and one of the big reasons I haven't yet (the other being distractions) is storage. How do you manage storing all of you're sculptures? I’m new to your channel after a fellow sculptor recommended it, so wild about how you detail your entire process. Video editing alone is A THING. This piece turned out so great and I loved watching it come together. I just discovered a trick recently working on some relief designs - with your transfer trick with the graphite, there is a toner trick I’ve been wild about that you might also like. If you print out fresh toner reversed and then pour molten clay over it, let it completely cool and then peel off the paper, the toner transfers to the surface of the clay. Works so well for quickly mocking up forms and lettering like you did with the calligraphy. I’m a sculptor but also a mold maker and very curious what you end up doing with your next steps. I’m going to keep checking out your work and maybe find my answer!

Also! Dude! The paper towel trick!! Amazing. Really helped me out.

I just bought a bunch of materials (NSP medium) and some tools.. I am really inspired by your art to get back to the hobby. I had a huge gap away from art and now I feel ready to get back to work. Thank you so much for the great work, it is a huge source of inspiration and also educational material 🥰 Please let me know if you have any tips for beginners in anatomy or where I can seek helpful material (references, etc) Thank you so much again 😊
@ArtChongArt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bebe :) For beginner anatomy... I think proportions and major forms is something you should try to concentrate on at the start. No need to worry about detailing rippling muscles or wrinkles and undulations until you've got some basics under your belt. just doing a "blank" form in a t-pose like how I start each sculpture is not a bad way to practice at least that much. (it counts as practice for me every time I do it :) ) As for references, any old anatomy chart for artists is not bad to start with. Once you're comfortable, Dynamic Anatomy by Hogarth isn't bad. Anatomy for Sculptors is great, but it's more of a reference book so it can be hard to use without some basics under your belt. An under-appreciated reference, I think, is athletes in motion. Look for photos and videos of athletes doing their thing, because they care more about the action than the camera. For this reason, Instagram models are AWFUL references. Hope this helps. Please feel free to tag me on IG if you post your sculpts there!
