As a 3D artist I can fill you about the female faces, same goes for "baby faced" men. The less roughness you have on the face, more uncanny it will become as pores etc are still texture based and not polygonal based. If pores were to be polygonal based, this is assumed to fix the problem as it would get the natural depth of even a smooth face. You can see this quite well with men too in the game "Detroit become human" as there are couple male faces in that game that have very smooth or "femine" feeling to them and look much more uncanny than the more "male" feeling faces. This also causes old women in games to look more realistic or more lived women look more realistic as in Cyberpunk 2077 with stress wrinkles etc that skips a tad the smoothness. Great video btw, I would love to buy this game too, but have such a long list of games to play and dont' want to drop 60€ when it's probably in sale when I actually get to it.

Good observation. I do character work myself but on the skinning/deformation side mostly. Normal maps are essentially just a texture projection with the illusion of depth. Sometimes the illusion breaks when the light hits the surface in a very particular way. Displacement maps are more convincing since the geometry is subdivided and then the map is applied, but heavier in a realtime environment. But in a typical film vfx shot where polycount isn't an issue, if you wanted to really push realism, you would actually model and even edgeloop every face wrinkle, and skin/weightpaint a ridiculously dense mesh. So dense of a polycount that the skincluster would need to be segmented into regions(head, torso, arms, legs, etc) in order to not crash the software. lol. We're a long way from that in games. Same with cloth sims that don't look rubbery.

It's a nice concept, it's just horribly executed. Isaac's RIG works because it takes up a massive amount of space on the screen on top of being explicitly color coded, meaning all it takes to check your health is a quick glance at Isaac's back. The CORE is tiny and much harder to read in comparison and in footage I've seen it can often be blocked by the stuff on Jacob's back at certain angles, which is sort of defeats the point in my opinion. It feels less like they were trying to make a functioning health bar and more so a RIG that wouldn't get them sued.

If ever a game was ruined by its pre-release marketing, it's this one. At least for me. What they promised was a more dour, gory Dead Space 1 - what we got was a Beat 'em up with an interesting combat system, a bland story, grotesque enemy design and utterly shitty bosses. At least for me that dissonance made it extremely hard to appreciate this game. The tech issues didn't help either.

Linearity not much of an issue either since the game is fairly short and very engaging. No need for unnecessary padding. Save system is the big issue for me because manual save is basically a carbon copy of the checkpoints as in if you die or just exit game, everything you did in between checkpoints (upgrades or items collected) will just get erased and permanent save only happens when you reach next checkpoint. It should've been more like that of games like Saints Row 2, 3, 4, Red Faction Guerilla / Armageddon, Mad Max, The Saboteur or Guardians of the Galaxy where every small progress you do updates the recent checkpoint via manual save. No new game plus mode on initial launch another big let down... should've been part of the base game for immediate replay value. I think the problem is less the linearity and more its nakedness. When the linearity in horror games is too obvious, when you don't have the illusion of choice, it's basically a haunted house. Which can be fun, but doesn't really generate suspense in the way a game you have more agency in can.
@anonymouseovermouse1960 Жыл бұрын
Yep. A good example of how systemic design, or even just basic systemic elements, make a game what it is. If you can mentally reduce an in-game situation to something like "This is probably a scripted moment, the only thing worth doing is what the game tells me to do" then your actual investment in the game, and thus the game's horror, is on par with your investment in the tension of a cutscene. Cuz yeah, cutscenes can be tense in their own way, but that can't be compared with something like your investment in the world, in your own choices, and in the dangers threatening you, like for example in Alien: Isolation, where you know that you'll have to be very, very careful of the alien and other enemies while at the same time actively working towards your current objective.

For me, the biggest issue in this game was a constant "and then this happened!" and it bugged the shit out of me when it kept going. The game was abso-fucking-lutely riddled with those times. Especially in the old elevator shaft down to the mines - the game holds you back to go through the shimmy point so the woman can get ahead enough for the girder to crash between you. Then you fall down and go on the next girder just for it to break when you're about to reach her. Then there's the busybody work in the mines and finally you clear out a place only to climb up on another catwalk, have it break AGAIN and then clear out the same area AGAIN. 🤦 I can get behind the combat. I can get behind the clichéd to fuck story. I can get behind the absolutely shite boss and ending. That constant way they keep just drop kicking the story down the line in any way whatsoever had me turn the game off five or six times.

As an animation student, for 2D and 3D, one thing that really disappoints me is the Biophage designs. Character design 101: Make each character have a distinct silhouette. This can be tied to what this character or enemy can do, which reinforces their visual design. Dead Space's Necromorphs all look unique, and all have their own gameplay loops, even if simple. The Biophage all look the same. Basically buncha dudes with really bad skin. It's...idk, it just sorta bores me. This game was easily a 6/10. New game plus would've brought it up to a 7, but the only things I found great were 1. Music 2. Atmosphere. 3. Voice acting. I actually enjoyed this game, for me it was a 7/10. I loved the atmosphere and the combat wasn’t bad, it’s about positioning when it comes to multiples enemies. Use the environment and position yourself in a good spot or just be aware of your surroundings. This game took a lot of flack because it was bad tech wise on pc and people wanted dead space. This isn’t dead space, it’s Callisto protocol, it’s like seeing a Jason movie but expecting Michael myers, it’s a different thing. This game should’ve stood to console only and bet the reviews would’ve been different, that’s the problem porting games over when their not ready. Overall though I enjoyed the game but I’m a sucker for space horror.

8:15 I cannot overstate how much I despise this trope of people pointing guns at each other. It always takes me out of the moment. If someone is pointing a gun at you, and you raise your gun, they're going to shoot you before you have it pointed at them, and if you're not an idiot, you'd do the same in the reverse situation.

I think the dlc is going to finish the cliff hanger to some extent or simply tell the events of the “helix station “ prequel audio series that’s pretty good. Most of the game it seemed to me as if they were implying that the HUD implant in his neck was causing the weird psychological issues . With that in mind it really didn’t end up being noticeable nor an issue

It is interesting to see the divide between people when it comes to the combat system. Personally i would be hard pressed to point to a combat system as bland, clunky, repetetive and unsatisfying as that in Callisto Protocol. Maybe playing Red Dead Redemption 2 from start to finish with melee only comes somewhat close? It is truly mindboggling to me the melee combat made it through playtesting.

This is probably the best defence for Callisto I've seen so far, so well done man (seriously, it was a pretty good video). Whilst I enjoyed certain elements of the Game (the Atmosphere & Graphics/sound design/lighting and the unique take on Fighting in a Horror Game) I overall found it disappointing. Here's Hoping that both the RE4 and Dead Space Remakes are better than this and that if a Callisto 2 is made, it will be a massive improvement Similar to The Evil Within 2 (not saying go Open-World, but rather improve on what was already here).

Great review! However, I did want to clarify something in regards to the story narrative: Here goes! Jacob wasn’t repressing a memory. That little cube? It was a cover-up image that the UJC filtered over the footage of the Europa incident. This is mentioned in-game though it is in passing. Because Jacob didn’t want to ‘ask questions’ regarding the cargo he was hauling, his conscience is eating away at him, because he refuses to consider that maybe he had a part in the outbreak. He never saw what happened at Europa actually until it was through Dani’s memories. That means all he ever saw was the cube, which is exactly why it shows up multiple times. Somewhere, deep down, he knows that something isn’t right, and Max, who acts like a conscience figure, is forcing him to come to grips with it. I hope that helps! Again, love the review, man!!!

I am really glad that you actually enjoyed the gameplay because I think it’s one of the best parts about the entire experience, and of course it does have a few clunky issues but those are easily ignored if you play the game using ranged combat for multiple enemies and melee for one or two. I’m just glad you appreciated the game for what it is rather than what it’s not. And I think that’s the biggest issue with how the game is being received. Feels like people hate it cause it’s not dead space. This isn’t dead space, it’s Callisto Protocol, and you know what? I really like Callisto protocol. Great video as always, thank you for this!

@@Scriptimus you got anything to show me where any of the trailers mention dead space? It’s very much a thing the community built up, not the games marketing, the only thing that tied this publicly to dead space is the fact some of visceral and glen schofield were working on it, that’s it. Obviously the two games share similarities considering the fact that they’re both horror themed space games where you fight what are essentially zombies. But aside from that the two games (in combat) don’t play anything alike. It’s puts more emphasis on melee but also wants you to use your firearms, using the two in tandem for the most effective encounter engagement. The story and a certain set piece also take pointers from DS1 and 2, but to be honest I feel like mechanically, callisto is it’s own thing. And in my opinion, despite the games issues, I think it deserves to stand alongside dead space as a really good game.

The story had issues, especially with the ending, which is going to be in the season pass. The gameplay was alright for a 10 hour game. But the thing that bothered me were the robots. I thought they would be an optional enemy for the whole game, but you only encounter 3 of them in the first half and one of them is just a stealth tutorial.

I just want to point out that the "flashlight" is that small white led dot (you can see it in your video at 53:22). Also, that the going through holes on the wall and vents were so short that I did not mind them and it added to the claustrophobia. I also want to say a huge THANK YOU, for this review: it seems that people cry about wanting a hard and unforgiving old school survival horror, but when they get it, they whine about it. Especially with this age of "Souls like" games that have nothing else going on beside being obtuse and hard for the sake of being hard. I died a lot in the beginning of the game (like I did when I played RE4 and Dead Space for the first time) but I learned the patterns and then it got enjoyable, not easy, because I died later on because I got cocky. I loved everything about the game and I hope it gets a sequel.

The lighting and textures look so much better in this video, you can actually see the details. I was playing on a PS4 after receiving the game as a gift, thanks to insomnia, I've finished the game already and really enjoyed it. My only complaints would be that the lighting sporadically made entire objects bright, edges of the light cast from light sources were visible with no defusion. Up until they fully loaded, the textures appeared to be made of yoghurt, and even a slight movement of the camera made them revert back into yogurt, even Jacob. Lastly regarding gameplay, the two heads are annoyingly bullet spongey and the last boss's pillar clipping homing spit attack is inescapable and widdles away your health basically putting a timer on the fight. I will say the flashlight on the suit rig is there, the lens on Jacob's left shoulder has light lines attached.

Personally.... story was never an issue for me (not everything needs to be explained) save for Dani, who was somewhat annoying and the blatant sequel baiting cliff hanger ending. The dodge system took some getting used to and made me reminisce about PUNCH OUT for obvious reasons. Overall, combat was really fun. Very engaging atmosphere and environment though not really scary. Unfortunately, game as a whole was just underwhelming and was lucky to get a quick refund. Will just wait until game is cheaper ($10-30) along with whatever additional patches and DLCs address it's various issues to play it again. Despite, my issues and rant.... game is still a great addition to the action adventure survival horror genre.

I overall enjoyed this game, personally putting between “ok” and “great”. Played on PS5 so no performance issues. Story was serviceable but nothing new. Played on highest difficulty enjoyed the combat for the most part. At first the combat (mainly dodging) felt wonky but I got used to it pretty soon. Like you said, enemies were respectful whenever you were outnumbered but were quick to make a mile whenever you gained an inch, this though made me want to actually utilize everything the game gave me and any time I died (which was usually my own fault) it made me switch up tactics. My main issue is that with how linear it was, the game just felt simultaneously too short but also a bit too long. I’d lean more toward short since difficulty and group fights really just act as padding so overall the game just didn’t feel worth the $60-70

Horror was a letdown for me, but the visuals and sound design were pretty great. Wish the melee combat had more complexity to it, but for what Callisto was aiming to do it’s not a bad start. It would just be nice to have more move sets to make the combat feel fresh and exciting rather than the same encounters again and again. 5/10 game for me, I expected something more from the minds of dead space. For what it’s worth Callisto is a good power fantasy.

With absolutely no irony, I love Callisto Protocol. The story is a bit bland up front, but the tone and environmental storytelling make up for it imo. The only tech problems I have had with it were at launch. Now, and I hate to use such a hackneyed phrase, but it's the Dark Souls of survival horrors: the combat is 95% dodge until you find and opening, hit the enemy, repeat, be patient, and don't get greedy. Once someone takes the time to actually learn the melee system, it's tight, responsive, and is such a breath of fresh air for horror games in general. Loved the review btw!

To play a little Devil's Advocate here: Linearity is fine in a game that empowers you. But horror is about the struggle, the fight to survive. It's why exploration is such a core component of horror games. It's about the struggle to scrounge up supplies so that you're ready for the next struggle and the relief you feel when those resources you accumulated pay off. If a game like the Callisto Protocol limits what you can do to a series of corridors and open rooms, then that limits the scares. You're not struggling, you're wandering around into the next setpiece. As for the combat, I don't think comparing Silent Hill 3 to the Callisto Protocol is an apt comparison. Silent Hill games are by and large about avoiding combat, because you're a weak person in a world of monsters. Combat is repetitive, because the focus isn't on the combat. In Callisto protocol, you're effectively a Space Marine with a small arsenal of weapons and combat is a must. In addition, combat in games - hell any combat-oriented game - is about the variation. In something like the RE games, you have an arsenal sure, but the combat is mixed in how you apply that arsenal. You have long-range, short-range, explosives, melee that can all be mixed up on the fly, oftentimes out of necessity to survive. In Callisto it looks like the combat is always the same. Always the melee/shooting/grip. And just a minor aside, I don't think you're weird. I think you have particular tastes and those tastes work for you. I might not agree with all your views, but I appreciate your candidness and your humility in recognizing that your tastes are your own. :)

As someone whose only context for the plot is this video and specifically the spoilers, I feel like they overdid it with Jacob. (Warning: Spoilers ahead) Jacob's initial conflict of being willfully apathetic to the part he played in the prison's operations feels like more than enough to give him an interesting dynamic. He's an outsider to the prison with no idea what's happening inside, but also undeniably tied to what's going on there by transporting supplies, enough that he has to rationalize away his guilt about it. His crash forces him to abandon his "I'm just looking out for myself" outlook as he's forced into the very system he profitted from, and discovers that it's not only horrible, but that everything's gone to shit. There's something very human about that, he's not evil for what he did before or some kind of boy scout for suddenly finding the warden an evil person. He's just some guy who's now trapped in the system he'd hoped he could turn a blind eye to, but now is trapped. With that in mind, he doesn't need (final warning: spoilers) to be the guy to supply the weird alien thingie. He's just someone forced to confront his complicity in a way that doesn't feel over the top or contrived. Handwaving away that special package, he's just a dude who'd been looking the other way at what happened here, and even if he refused the help, the prison would have still moved on. But he *did* contribute, even if it's just a job, and in a way there's a small irony that he's now trapped in this nightmare. He became a prisoner after previously forcing himself not to think hard about what happens to inmates here, and in a small way has to confront this fact. He's not flawed because he delivered the bad McGuffin, he's flawed because now he understands what it's like to be trapped, knowing the outside "world" (solar system?) doesn't care what's happening here. He was wrong ignore it, and now he's going through hell because of that.

So here’s my take on this. I like we’re they were going, but what made dead space so nuanced in its horror is missing. for example there is one moment that I really liked involving The co captain that died in the beginning. I thought to myself man that was a solid creepy moment, but then they reuse the trope and I predicted the next jump scare involving said co captain. Dead space has a lot of these moments but there done well alongside the superb sound design. For example: when you see the guy slowly smashing his head into the wall, when you see the necromorph watching you then slowly going around the corner, the jumpscares that happen when the audio cuts out at a save station or item store,the oppressive atmosphere of everything going wrong and being alone, so forth and so on. They tried to capture lighting in a bottle but put to much pressure on themselves. Saying all that I still liked the game and hope the DLC will be good.

16:00 YES! I can enjoy lore and finer details here and there, but one of this game's strongest points is that it doesn't need to find every chance to tell you that it's the year 24XX; the Earth governments fully globalized (but obviously took after the US government structure, duh) and settled on Europa in 23XX; started, I don't know, mining for a strange but revolutionary new fuel/supermaterial etc. to the point that it becomes exhausting. Every detail I need to know to experience the story in front of me is accessible and most information is useful and/or brief. This game might have bored me to tears had they started dumping paragraphs of lore entries. I know this might seem obvious for us, but during development, I'm sure there was plenty of consideration for which options and routes to take when world building, and I think they made the right call.
@zachvalzach2434 Жыл бұрын
As for why the combat gets a bad wrap, I agree; I liked it a lot. I'm still watching, but to posit my opinion/theory, I think it revolves around people relying on the melee when they shouldn't. A common criticism levied against this game is that the melee breaks down when there's more than one enemy, but that's the point. The game gives you tools to space the enemies out and kill them from a distance when melee isn't viable. For myself, this is obvious and clicked well, but I understand that it might not seem that way to everyone. People's concerns over ammo reserves (particularly before they realize there's actually a buttload of ammo) will drive them to rely on what they know won't run out. Ultimately, I think making melee infinite and GRP recharge were both mistakes in the game design. I know the kneejerk reaction to nerfing the player like this would be negative, but it would probably encourage varied, strategic attacking. Plus, having to pick up a new baton from the occasional dead guard would have just enriched the environment further.

I don't know, I mentally rolled my eyes at the whole "shadow organization" reveal, it wasn't even built up well enough to warrant such a sudden reveal of a cult like organization being the cause of the outbreak, which isn't new, it's been done a lot in stories involving outbreaks. I think it could have worked, but honestly it just felt too forced. Their whole plan to evolve the human species to better suit outer space is a great idea, but the way they're executing it is just stupid and reckless. The Unitologists were similar in Dead Space, but you can argue that they had gone crazy do to being under the marker's influence. They were being manipulated by the brethren moons that only saw life as a means to an end, to make more brethren moons through the process of death. The villains in the Callisto Protocol don't have anything like that to lean on for such an irrational decisions to purposefully start outbreaks with little to no understanding of the pathogen they have discovered. I'm no biologist, but I'm pretty sure if you want to make a biologically advanced human, your first impulse isn't to just let a pathogen loose and hope that someone will have the desired results after being infected. Maybe the sequel or DLC will prove me wrong and maybe there's more to it than they're letting on, but even so, it's sloppy writing, the mistake was giving too much away too soon about the government's plan and what the pathogen is. In dead space, we didn't know much about the necromorphs or the markers and why unitologists were trying to spread them until the 3rd game, with subtle hints and answers in the second game. This gave a feeling of mystery, the horror of the unknown, and makes you want to find out more, but knowing you'll have to tread through the horror in order to find out the inevitable cosmic truth that not even governments can control. I know people shouldn't be comparing this game to dead space (even though they have a lot of similar dead space elements, mechanics, Easter eggs, and even using a tossed out story originally meant for dead space, which now I'm glad they did not go with it after playing this game.) But it's hard because Dead space in my opinion has a better story and knew how to implement psychological horror, action horror and cosmic horror all at the same time with great pacing and balance. I just want to experience horror again, horror that makes me queasy after it put unwanted, existential dread ideas in my head, ideas that make me question the futility of life. Fighting angry, bloodthirsty zombies caused by corrupt governments and secret organizations, as a story concept on its own, can only be scary for so long until it just becomes cliché. If they're gonna go that route, there has to be a mind-blowing, outside the box and terrifying reason as to why. "Government is bad cuz they're too ambitious" is not scary anymore, it's annoying and frustrating.
