The Camberley Outrage - Scotland Yard Casebook
News of the Times Episode 362 | 1906
It is 1906 Camberley, Surrey and independently wealthy, eccentric, senior spinsters, the Hogg sisters, are going about their usual tasks on a June afternoon.
Suddenly, 62 year old Caroline Hogg, clutching her throat, staggers to a neighbours house and, struggling to speak, manages to relay that her sister is in trouble at their home. Upon reaching the Hogg residence, older sister Mary Ann is found lying in a pool of blood. Her throat has been cut so deeply, her head is partly cut away from her body. There are gashes upon her head. In her hand, she clutches a hammer head.
The suspected motive is robbery, but nothing has been taken.
This puzzling case brought Scotland Yard to the scene. However, clues are scarce. Then another incident occurs not far away. Then another a few days later. Oh yes, and there seems to be a known lunatic roaming the countryside.
We take a look at this famous case from 1909 involving Scotland Yard and the Camberley outrage in today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

I enjoyed the video very much. It leaves a sort of sadness because it was never solved. Only the culprit knew the truth of the situation. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you - very glad you enjoyed! Yes, it is always somewhat disapppointing when they do not catch the killer! Scotland yard, and members of the nquest, seemd to be thnking that caroline did it...and that the other two crimes were unrelated. possibly copycats? 🤔

I found this one extremely interesting. I was living in Camberley before we moved to Canada in the 70s so I liked the personal connection. What a crazy set of crimes.

Oooh - we know the area too! A member of the team lived in Wokingham - camberley was where to go for school uniforms.🙄 Really bizarre! It is strange how they then just stopped. Scotland yard did not think the other two crimes were related...🤔

I loved the photographs, Especially those of what Camberley and Sandhurst looked like at times in the past.

This was a very intriguing and yet mysterious case of the murder and attempted murder of two mature sisters. I'm disappointed that the Scotland Yard detectives weren't able to solve this horrific case. Its interesting that similar cases happened nearby right after this case. Do you know whatever happened to Caroline Hogg? Great investigation, presentation, backstory, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋

Yes, it was all considered highly scary in the area! It isalways disappointing when the criminal walks...No, we do not know what happend with caroline - all goes quiet there. Scotland yard members, later, sounded quite bitter about the whole experience - they seemed to have felt misled and unsupported, There seemd to be leanbings towards the theory that Caroline had done it. 🤔

Wow!! What a mystery!! Even Scotland Yard was flummoxed!! I do agree with the theory that the murder was planned in advance!! I wonder what happened to poor Caroline!! She must've been traumatised for life!! Thanks for another well-researched story, Robin and team!!❤💕💙👏💞👍

Thak you - glad you liked! 🙏Well, for qute a while we had the theory that Caroline had done it - possibly we are harking back to the brilliant film, "Whatever happened ot Baby Jane"😁 Our reason: Mary ann did not have the money, Caroline did. mary Ann took care of the household and ran things - they had no servants. mary ann sounds a bit like Cinderella. One can only imagine that resentment would begin to build in anyone in a cinderella position. They were supposed to go for a ride, mary ann cancels it so caroline is going nowhere although they had agreed they would go for a ride. We think there was an argument which got nasty. Caroline, by all accounts, was a stout woman - Mary ann was not. So, this was our theory (which sounds like it was also the scotland yard theory which they could nt really say out loud but whihc seems clear from the pointed questions to Caroline in the inquest). As for the other two incidents...copycats?🤔 Caroline's explanatiomn for the evnts of the day were not backed up forensically. But - our theory vanishes with the hammer being owned by the builder...🤔

@@newsofthetimes I thought the same re Caroline!! How she could have called for help with such a nasty cut to the throat also puzzled me!! Surely she would have been unable to say ANYTHING?! Maybe one day, a modern day Hercule Poirot will solve the mystery!!🤔🤔

As always I very much enjoyed your video. This one was a very strange and perplexing series of crimes. It seems very odd that a reporter was able to glean all that information before Scotland Yard. And I can understand why it would put a very bad taste in certain peoples mouth. As always RC and the team deserves a 5 star for the job.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ But if I may ask a question? The sisters ( l will not say old as I am 62 myself ) were referred to as "maiden" but in other videos unmarried women are referred to as "spinster" is it a class thing or are they more or less the. same?
@newsofthetimes
@newsofthetimes Ай бұрын
Thank you! 🙏Hmmm - we do not recall calling them maidens? or at least the word "spinster" was in the script....Unless I, oops, went off script, which I sometimes do and which makes my team roll their eyes.🙄 Alot. You are quite right - "spinster" would be the proper term. Maiden would refer to a young, age of consent(ish) girl. 👍
