I agree, ban it. It's pretty much just hardware for script Kitties. It's like a Swiss army knife in that it does lots of things poorly. Anyone doing anything interesting will own a hackone RF or other rt-sdr devices, card readers like a proxmark etc. I would almost go as far to say that if this is the only hacking tool you own then you are part of the problem.

If you can change a traffic light with that thing without authorization, it's the traffic light what should be banned. If you can unlock a car with it, the car manufacturer should be ordered to recall. Banning a simple device that exposes wide spread vulnerabilities does not fix those vulnerabilities.
@N20Joe

This! If anything the flipper is a godsend for exposing these vulnerabilities. If these things are so insecure that they can be easily hacked like this, then they would otherwise just be hacked separately, and are in need of more security.

@@theracc2318And that's what needs to be changed. In Poland privileged vehicles can not change the traffic lights, they can simply lawfully ignore the traffic lights. Moreover other drivers are obliged by law to let privileged vehicles pass. And it just works.

@@wojciechsura I agree, but I know an ambulance driver that passed on a red light while they had a patient having a seizure in the back and since the light was green on the other side of the intersection, another driver didn’t stop so they hit the ambulance. The ambulance driver lost their license… So maybe being able to change the light with a more sophisticated protocol would be better (something to recognize a vehicle id or smt) but I feel like it’s better if the lights give right of way to the emergency vehicle. Heck, the system could just put all of the lights red until the emergency vehicle passes

The problem isn't Flipper Zero, the problem is bad development work at any wirless electronics, used today. If a system waits for wirless /RFID information, that system has to be designed "brut force" save nowdays, as any system, running in the internet. Sure I can record car keyless locks, but again, there are technologies, like public/private key exchange that could avoid such problems. But industry just is interested in sale, not safety ... A stolen car isn't a problem for the manufacutrer, and mostly for the owner, due to insurances. So the insurance companies had to kick the car industries ass, just for example ... Best example the multi-comfort connected drive from BMW. This just wanted to be hacked in near future ...

Don't ban it. Banning it will only provide short-term benefits. If a flipper and script kiddies can do all these things, then clearly an investment in more advanced security infrastructure is necessary. Exposing vulnerabilities will accelerate progress. The government should be leaning into it and encourage companies to offer bug bounties. That way vulnerabilities can be properly documented and fixed before they become a widescale problem.

Back in the day.. yes that day. We used to program the 8086 and 8088 even the Z80 processors without having the hardware information. it was peeks and pokes into memory and people sharing what we did to get find how to write the software. Now this open hardware stuff allows anyone with a GUI development environment to write programs or scripts without even knowing the hardware. The flipper goes back to the old days where if you actually understand what you are coding to you can make it do things that people think are amazing or scary. Even if I didn't have a flipper I could buy an esp32 microcontroller and do almost all the same things. Stupid to ban this device. This shows a lack of understanding. Maybe I should just create a video on how to do the same thing with esp32's for less than 15$. Sub-GHZ transmitters, wifi, etc not a problem. Maybe if Lowes, CVS etc. didn't leave their systems wide open this wouldn't be a problem or Huyndi and KIA with crappy security or Tesla with easy to crack SubG modes. Real hardware coders don't need a flipper to do the scary stuff but it is all in one place.

The reason I don't think it's a good idea because banning things is usually bad policy. The tool itself isn't the problem. It's people who abuse the tool. In the process of banning tools they also have to create an allow-list of sorts and certification, and bureaucracies, and licenses... What's the return on that investment? You call it an experiment. I disagree. There are many examples of such edicts. They're ineffective. They are easily circumvented. They are often widely ignored. The only good that can come of this is that someone will sell a lot more Flipper Zeros in Canada, at a premium.

You present a false dichotomy: there are more than two groups affected by the ban. I know, I belong to neither of yours. Your motivation for banning the flipper is poor: misinformation misrepresents its capabilities to others. Perception that it is dangerous does not mean it is. Should the makers serve as a scapegoat and suffer as a result? The US has a poor track record with privacy: they banned anything stronger than 40-bit encryption for years. More recent evidence can be found with Snowden. What do you want with respect to open source? Regardless of the platform, you will *never* know that your code matches whats on the device. The idea that the creators are waiting for a hacker to 'unlock' the potential is silly.

>they banned anything stronger than 40-bit encryption for years Incorrect. Encryption stronger than that is considered a defense article, covered under the USML or the United Stated Munitions List, and is subject to that with regards to exportation. Those encryption standards are developed here and thus subject to those exportation standards. Also note that having a non-citizen even view the schematics for it is considered an export and not allowed without State Department approval. If you want a "traditional" munition to compare to, look at generation 3 (and above) night vision devices -- *looking through* a Gen3 or above NOD is considered an export as it gives firsthand knowledge as to how the device works, let alone looking at a wiring or materials schematic for that same phosphor device.

Don't let them ban the Flipper. Sure it's not great in terms of ability compared to higher end devices as you said... but they ban the Flipper because its an easy target, use that precedence to ban other tools, eventually your tools get banned or require a license. Canada (I live here in Canada... sucks) wants things like "common sense hacker control" and the government might just be crazy enough to pull it off if they run out of tax payers to squeeze. "Common sense hacker control" would require a license to use our skills as electronics guys because I doubt they will stop at security related developers... not when they can require all programmers to be regulated and licensed both to control what and for whom we create, but also to squeeze our meager pay even more so they can use our money to go on luxury vacations on taxpayer money... if someone can hack into a street light from a little device that looks like an ipod, then that's a failure on the DOT and the gov't rather than a flipper zero device problem you can hack into computers from a USB flash drive, should that mean flash drives should be banned? no. just because you can carry a kitchen knife in your pocked doesn't mean you should ban all kitchen knives. the flipper can also be used for convenient things like pretending to be an Amiibo or NFC card, or pretending to be a TV remote. what about people doing their jobs that happen to use the flipper for trivial easy things, like penetration testing into a facility. if someone of that background could just pop into your building with a hacking toy then that should be really effective marketing for your service.

Yes, there are other devices that do the same things, or more (or better), but they're not prepackaged for the script kiddies to play with easily. @@topduk Im not an engineer, just a guy who likes computers, but I doubt they are gonna ban small wireless receivers and transmitters as well as Arduino and microcontrollers. At that point microwaves would probably be put up to ban cuz bad scary electronics.

The only problem with the Flipper is that it is too expensive. They should be $20, then everyone will have one and stupidly insecure RF "things" will slowly and painfully disappear.

When I first heard about the ban I thought it was dumb because flippers aren’t stealing cars ,but you helped me realize that the user base are skids that will just use it to open garage doors so there is no downside to it other than the gov banning one more thing😅

I'm kinda split on this issue. The flipper is nothing special, just a fancy arduino with some peripherals and some easy to use firmware, and electronics hobbyist can easily cobble something similar together. Many of the issues being exploited with the flipper (not the fake videos) have been known for a _long_ time, and are generally considered common knowledge, yet nothing has changed in the past many years. While I don't like enabling script kiddies, it is probably one of the few ways to actually get the general public interested and generate some pressure to make safer systems

I have never owned a rubber ducky or one of those usb evil cables that can hack computers or even a FZ but i can use a pico pi to make the same stuff of the rubber ducky or the usb cable, the case of the FZ is simply get a ESP 32 and a couple of modules and you will get the same FZ functionality but as i said i have never owned one of any of those and i do not need them at all, I know how to make lock picks too and i know how to pick a lock but i don't want and don't need to. Tools are tools, man + knowledge = tools can be made when needed.

Banning it will just make it more popular with the script kiddies and company. Everyone and their dog will try and get their hands on more than one. Instead of banning, regulate who can import them and buy them. Restrict to unis, cybersec etc. Banning a digital tool like the flipper zero is akin to banning actual tools like spanners, screwdrivers, drills.
