What a brilliant full-circle historical story. Thank you for sharing that story, the beauty of the island and all the other stories from you Mom. How wonderful that you Dad was able to ring in and be a part of the archaeological study. Just such an enjoyable video - a balm for the hectic workaday world. Cheers!

Absolutely fascinating follow up on the Archeologist's visit and his views of Auskerry. The story about the WWII pilot was wonderful, and especially that he and his family were able to return. Hamish your reporting style is so refreshing and you kept me captivated during the entire video. Thank you for taking us along!

What a special story of the Canadian pilot, and that your families are still in touch is so special. When I first starting watching your podcast it was because of my love of sheep and knitting. What I have so thoroughly enjoyed is learning about your family and the island itself. The archeology of the island has been outstanding. The past centuries of people occupying the island is very interesting. If I’m ever blessed with a trip to Shetland I will definitely have to see as much of Orkney as possible, I assume coming to your Island would not be possible. May you and your family have a blessed holiday season. ❤

Aw thanks so much for your kind comment! I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the series even as it’s changed a bit from the sheep focus earlier on. You’ll be glad to hear the next episode will be much more focussed on the sheep again!! Sending good wishes to you and I hope you have a great festive period ☺️

I love your family. I love Auskerry. The sheep, the wool process, the sea, the history known and the archaic facts still to be uncovered. And a Canadian connection on top of all that! My father was a lieutenant in the Canadian Army during WW II. Cheers Hamish this one was a banger! Looking forward to Paul's return and future unraveling of some more history. Staggering to think of how many lives have lived there over such a great length of time.

I feel like I am there with you all, listening to your Mom (and Dad!) and Paul discussing the different sites, hearing the untold stories of the island. It's a poignant reminder of how fragile life can be, and yet at the same time the human will to survive is stronger than we realize. :-)

Thanks Hamish. Such a beautiful place. My soul could use a few weeks of wandering around the island. Love that you now have a drone. It adds a new dimension to this adventure. Doing a superb job documenting previous and present life. I'm enjoying this more than you know.
@hamishauskerryАй бұрын
Aw Marty thanks so much! The drone certainly makes it easier to show the scale and shape of things. I’d never seen the Gerson dyke from above like that before and therefore never really noticed it meets up with the chapel. It’s all so cool to think of the people who lived here before us. All the best to you 👍

Such a wonderful surprise to see that for once KZbin’s algorithm got it right by offering your video to me. Unwilling to think that lightning might strike the same place again, and not wanting to tempt fate, I have liked and subscribed! Thank you for this fascinating glimpse into many phases of history. On seeing the chapel I was reminded of an old Time Team episode done on Mull where a somewhat similar chapel ultimately had some burials nearby. It causes me to wonder if that might also be so for your chapel - Thanks again.
@hamishauskerryАй бұрын
Ah welcome!! Thanks so much for your support. That’s really interesting about the Mull digging - I haven’t seen that episode but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a lot of things under the ground here that we have no idea about. I’m surprised I’ve never found any human remains in the peat bogs that we dig for fuel but maybe one day! All the best to you and I hope you enjoy the other videos in the series ☺️

Interesting that you have a Girson dyke... is that the correct spelling... as there is a Girsonfield in Northumberland . Is it a personal name or does the word have a meaning. Your mum has such an infectious passion and I do hope the island will stay in the family for the future. 😊
@hamishauskerryАй бұрын
Hello! Ah this is so interesting! Gerson is how it’s spelled in Auskerry so perhaps it’s related. It’s definitely a historic name rather than one of ours. I will ask mum next time I speak to her if she knows why it’s called the Gerson Dyke, except for the fact it’s next to Gerson Geo. Thanks for watching!

Hi Dave, thanks for watching with such a keen eye! I’ve watched it back and honestly I can’t be completely sure what those birds are. They’re white so I suspect they’re a pair of fulmars. Later on in the video some Oyster Catchers come close to the drone too for a look! Thanks for watching

I am already know about Auskerry’s seaweed sheep but are there other any native species that are only found on the island
@hamishauskerry23 күн бұрын
Hello Jon, I don’t think there are any species that are only to be found here. The sheep we have are also on the island of North Ronaldsay, where their name comes from. We do have some rare birds like Storm Petrels, which we apparently have about 10% of the UK breeding population nesting here. I think Auskerry’s power is in its variety of wildlife! Thanks for watching - welcome to the channel ☺️
