Beautiful memories of a bygone era, thank you so much for posting. I still find it strange how one fails to appreciate what they have until they no longer have it.

This video showed a lot of the year 1913. My mother was born that year, in Panama, her father went there to work on the canal. My sister and we’re born there, but our memories were of growing up in the Canal Zone in the 50s and 60s. Thank you I really enjoyed this video and you did it beautifully.

Thank you for this video. I lived in Panama from 1970 until 1985. For the most part I lived in Panama City but always went to DOD schools since I'm an American. Later we were able to move to Balboa and then moved again to Quarry Heights (I think....it was a long time ago and I left Panama when I was 15 years old). I really loved Panama, the country and the people, as well as the Canal Zone. I had such a wonderful childhood. Gracias Panama and thank you America. I love both countries.

Very interesting project about showing some views and buildings of the former Panama Canal Zone and its current status. Im glad that there are people interested in canal zone and canal constructions history. Im a Panamanian very interested in history of that former territory of the us (canal zone) and whether people (Panamanians) like it or not, it is part of our history as a nation. I really think and believe that it is very important to preserve what is left of the former canal zone, because it was a a unique society in the middle of the rainforest inside a country with different language and culture. We (panamanians) influence in a way that society that was the canal zone, and they (americans in the canal zone) influences our society in a way as well. We must be proud of that amazing historical heritage (canal zone) that has no been replicated in any other nation in Latin America.

well said and I agree (even though I'm not Panamanian but many of my relatives are Panamanian and my father was a dual citizen). Panama and the Canal Zone influenced each other (in good ways imo).

15:42. That's actually Ridge Road before it was levelled down and realigned. It's the street off Heights Rd above the Administration Building with the bus stop in front of it. I've been searching years for a picture of how it looked then. It was totally realigned in the early 50s with the height dropped by over five feet.

My friends from Hong Kong and South Africa share my conflicted sentiments about our childhoods in such wonderful places like the Canal Zone (I am a kid of the zone). Then, our young lives were idyllic. Fast forward 1/2 a century and all has changed. Time has provided a perspective and we now understand that simultaneously many "others" just over the fence or border or whatever barrier we humans erected to keep "them" away from our privileged paradise, don't share such fond memories. Hopefully the changes work towards a better humanity for all and not just "the privileged few".

Great video! I am at 2:32 in it when I am commenting. The photo of the Ancon graveyard in front of the admin building is freaky. That's right where Balboa Elementary School was where a lot of us went to school at. What did they do with all of the graves after they moved them? Where did they put them?

The Canal Zone ceased to exist in 1979. Thousands of Americans born in the Canal Zone before 1970 remember it well. Clean, well organized, and law abiding.
