Wow, lots to pick up in this episode. "A bird that's going to rear will rear on emp, broccoli, emp. If it doesn't, I don't want to know." Good advice. I've found delicate parents breed delicate youngsters, which grow up to be delicate parents!!!! Thanks to Terry Kelly for his time and his wisdom.

Brilliant, fascinating and enjoyable. This is most entertaining. The keep it simple approach dispels the myths built up about using lots of additives and supplements, well said.

Great episode, as usual, I'm new in canary keeping Mr. Terry Kelly mention he feed his bird A&B in the morning, Broccoli in lunchtime, and A&B in the evening. Excuse my ignorance of what A&B stands for, I'm just new to the hobby. Every episode I watch serves as a guideline for my hobby.

I used to breed and exhibit Fifes and Cockatiels, in partnership, way back at the end of the 80s to the beginning of the 90s, before moving to Croatia. I was a member of the Reading and District Cage Bird Society, and I am in total agreement with Terry with respect to the character of the Canary breeders and Foreign breeders and British breeders to a man (and woman) at least at that time. Budgie breeders had a different character. They weren't unfriendly (though some I met could be a bit snooty), just uncommunicative about certain techniques and many tricks of the trade. When you consider that one champion Budgie exhibitor I knew was selling young stock at a £1,000 a pop, maybe they have a point. But the Canary exhibitors were as friendly and open as it was possible to be, volunteering information right from the beginning, some that I lacked knowledge and experience to understand (I have a history with animals of many kinds. Biology was my favourite subject in school, a I went to agriculture college after school). But no worries, because they were so determined to help every novice in the fancy that they would repeat what was necessary every year, multiple times in the year, until the penny dropped. They went out of their way to get me in touch with a champion breeder outside the CBS in my chosen field -I fell in love with the Fife at R&D CBS- to get me set up with the best starters possible (and for the young stock I could then seek advice and pairings from among the CBS members). That's how I met Jo Eaton. It was in Jo's Birdroom that I fell in love with the Cinnamon. I bought three pairs from her for £5.00 a bird (I was told to start small) including one Cinnamon cock with a self green hen specially pick by Jo herself (from among her keepers), to pair with him him. £5.00 was the same price you'd pay for any undefined scraggy canary at a pet shop at that time ( I know, I had one -nobody at the CBS could work out its ancestry except to say, "it's probably got quite a bit of Border in it, though it's far too big to be a border"). Am I happy I decided to see if there were any canary breeder/exhibitor's videos on KZbin. On Amazon, my book shop, I found five titles for keeping canaries, but customer reviews reduced that to three. But they are on general canary keeping not fancy canaries, so I thought I'd come looking for exhibitors on KZbin instead, to see if I could find some good titles in English to re-spark my interest, and here I find what is apparently the best title I could find . . . and on Fifes of all things! That's me blessed! P.S. Have liked and subscribed.

Hi Matt, just watched your video with Terry , as a newbie can i ask whats the difference between flighted and unflighted birds
@TheCanaryRoom
@TheCanaryRoom Жыл бұрын
The term refers to flight feathers so an unflighted bird is one bred the previous year, in its first moult the bird doesn’t lose any of its flight feathers (effectively tail etc) but it does as it gets older. So a bird hatched in 2022 would (for now) be classed as unflighted

Hello Matt I stumbled across your channel a while ago and was hooked straight away. I am just getting over a bad breakdown and depression and wondered what size shed would be best to start keeping a few birds in to help my recovery and what cages would be needed I am interested in British birds but at the minute funds are limited due to not being able to work. Just sitting and watching them would be a great tonic. Do you know any breeders in Warwickshire that would let me visit them and get advice thanks for your time all the best. Carl
@TheCanaryRoom

Hi Carl, sorry to hear that, and best wishes for a good recovery. Get as big a shed as you can manage, that said the canary room is only 10x 8 but the cages are well planned . I’ll ask around to see if anyone’s in your neck of the woods

Hey, I am all the way from Bangladesh 🇧🇩. I am 13 years old, I love your videos. I will start breeding Bengali/Society finches for some pocket money. I want to give them soak seeds to them 2-4 times a week. Is that enough and is this seed mix ok for finches? Also what seeds did you put in the soak seed mix and how much? Is there anything else I can or should add to it to make it better? Please reply.

hi my son is 12 and has started breeding canary's i breed Norwich 20 years ago, I am building him a bird room and aviary, the hobby has changed so much i remember going to the NEC for nationals. were is the best place to by fifes and what is the average cost for pairs these days
@TheCanaryRoom
@TheCanaryRoom 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, the Fife is a hugely popular variety and there are breeders all over the U.K.. The Fife canary council (you’ll find them on Facebook) have created a breeder catalogue that may help. Price is very much dependent on quality except to pay between £30 - £ 70 per bird although there are more and less expensive options too
