After going back and watching some of the reruns on BUZZR, I have to say that Match Game '90 is definitely an underrated version of the show. Playing for money instead of straight matches and the introduction of the Match-Up rounds really gave a nice change of pace to the classic formula.
@marcpower416718 сағат бұрын
My only gripe with the match up game was the 2nd one with added time and double values rendered the first round kinda meaningless. The Canadian revival from a few years ago I think did it right by just having 1 match up round.

MG ’90 was cancelled due to airing at Noon on ABC at a time when local noon newscasts were gaining popularity. ABC gave all its affiliates a choice, and most sadly (but understandably) decided to go with news, causing MG ’90 to be completely pre-empted on most ABC affiliates, leading to its early demise. Ross Shafer actually did an excellent job as host, having to host the main series, as Bert Convy’s health issue was actually brain cancer, and he sadly died on July 15, 1991, just around 3½ weeks after MG ’90 was cancelled following its final aired episode on June 21, 1991. And as good as Bert did, it still disappoints me to this day that Gene Rayburn, who was intereated in hosting a 4th version of the show (If MG-HSH is to be counted), had his age outed and was discriminated on the basis of his age, and being snubbed for the job. That’s gratitude for ya Also, MG ’98 waa infinitely more watchable than its terrible pilot _MG2: The Match Game_ of 1996 or the even more horrendous Alec Baldwin version which ended several years ago. And speaking of stinkers, in the Pyramid series, no version is worse than GSN’s _The Pyramid_ , hosted by Mike Richards. It’s the kind of show you watch once and just wish all 40 episodes would become forever lost media.

To tell the truth 1990 must have had some kind of curse on it: NBC accidentally airs the pilot on premiere day hosted by Richard Kline Gordon Elliot had to leave the show after 10 weeks because another production company with whom he had recently done a pilot, claimed exclusive rights to him. (And what a shame cause he did a fantastic job) Lynn Swann got rushed in as a replacement host but had to leave after 16 weeks due to his comittments to ABC football coverage. Alex Trebek replaced Lynn, but had to miss 2 shows due to his wife suddenly going in to labor. So Mark Goodson himself filled in. (Fyi, Alex said in his book Mark still paid him for those 2 shows)

I thought of one you may have missed from that year: The Quiz kids challenge hosted by Jonathon Prince. The show pitted a team of 3 kids who would stay for the week competing against a different team of 3 adults each day in a quiz bowl type game.

First, other shows like "The new Tic Tac Dough", "Quiz Kids Challenge" & "Lets Go Back" (which was a cable series that Scott Sternberg hosted) also got cancelled around that time. Second, yes, despite an infusion of new game shows & hosts to start off the 90-91 season, everything died fast, some blame gulf war coverage for that. I more so blame competing talk shows. A few "Kisses of death" for the game show industry that happened around this time; "To Tell The Truth" not being able to find a permanent host, when "Wheel of Fortune" left CBS & returned to NBC, CBS only added an extra half hour to an already existing game show of theirs ("Family Feud") rather than replace it by starting another game show. NBC just showing reruns of "Classic Concentration" for two years starting when it returned from being off the air for a month in favor of a failed new tabloid show starting in Sept. of '91. Bert Convy getting sick & dying also didnt help matters as not only he was a good& popular host, but started his producing company with Burt Reynolds "Bert & Burt" that primarily did game shows. The 3 networks were reluctant to do morning game show blocks for years as adding more time for it's own productions (like an expanded "Today" or "Good Morning America" show), throwing in a rerun of a network sitcom or flat out giving those time slots back to their affiliates seemed like a more beneficial way to go for them.

Game shows over the years are gimmicked up to the point where it's impossible to watch them anymore. Some shows like match game or 3 on a match need to be straddle for next taping. Shows like jackpot don't need 16 players that can be cut down to 3 players. Sometimes game shows don't get type of players they need for that game, which could lead to it to being cancel.
