Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
A series of special episodes of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who will air to celebrate the programme's 60th anniversary. The episodes were written by Russell T Davies, and will be broadcast on BBC One in November 2023, preceding the following fourteenth series. David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials.
The three specials were directed by Rachel Talalay, Tom Kingsley and Chanya Button respectively. Filming moved from Roath Lock Studios to Wolf Studios once Bad Wolf became a co-producer of the series; filming commenced in May 2022, and was complete
David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials. Yasmin Finney joined the cast for the anniversary, to portray a character named Rose. Bernard Cribbins, Jacqueline King and Karl Collins are also set to return as Wilfred Mott, Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, respectively.
On 29 July 2021, the BBC announced that Chris Chibnall, who served as executive producer and showrunner of the series for the Thirteenth Doctor, would depart the series after a run of specials in 2022. In the BBC press release, Chibnall is quoted as saying: "I wish our successors - whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose - as much fun as we've had. They're in for a treat!" The future of the programme was first teased by Piers Wenger on 25 August 2021, when he said an upcoming change for Doctor Who would be "radical".
On 24 September 2021, the BBC announced Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as showrunner, after having previously acted as showrunner from 2005-2010 for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. He will succeed Chibnall for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond. Davies will be joined by the Bad Wolf production company, which was founded by former Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner and former BBC head of drama Jane Tranter. In October 2021, it was announced that Sony would acquire a majority of Bad Wolf. Bad Wolf also took over creative control of Doctor Who beginning with the specials, allowing the BBC to focus on establishing Doctor Who as a global brand.
Phil Collinson returned to the show as producer, having previously produced episodes from 2005-2008. Davies confirmed by March 2022 that production had begun at Bad Wolf Studios in Cardiff. William Oswald is also editing for the new series.
On 13 June 2022, Davies announced that Neil Patrick Harris would be joining the cast, playing an undisclosed role.
The Fourteenth Doctor is the current incarnation of the Doctor, the fictional protagonist of the BBC science fiction television programme, Doctor Who. The Fourteenth Doctor is portrayed by Scottish actor, David Tennant, who previously portrayed the Tenth Doctor.
Within the series narrative, the Doctor is a millennia-old, alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, with somewhat unknown origins, who travels in time and space in their TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of life, the Doctor regenerates; as a result, the physical appearance and personality of the Doctor changes.
Ncuti Gatwa had previously been announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor as the programme's lead, and many reports stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa. Upon Jodie Whittaker's final appearance as the character, she instead regenerated into a form similar to the Tenth Doctor. This character, portrayed by Tennant, was confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor, with later clarification that Ncuti Gatwa would actually portray the Fifteenth Doctor

People are saying toymaker, and while yes, nph seems like the toymaker, and we saw that little reference on the shop window, I think the similarities are too strong between now and the dark dimension, so nph definitely could still be the professor from tdd

A nice video once again Tharries on perhaps one of the better/more interesting concepts proposed during the wilderness years. RTD got his intial break in those wilderness years writing for The New Adventures novels and under his previous stewardship as showrunner he often delved into those wilderness years. So borrowing from The Dark Dimension for the 60th anniversary wouldn't be surprising.

Watch William Hartnell episode 4 of the Celestial Toy Maker, there is a clue that the Celestial Toy Maker will one day return, and the 60th anniversary just happens to be the point in time he returns, I strongly recommend listening to that, episode in the words of River Song "Spoilers"

Philip Segal said in a DVD documentary for The TV movie that he took a look at the script and he thought it was terrible and completely embarrassing. He actually requested to pull the plug on The Dark Dimension.

Much like the McGann series that never was, this Dark Dimension is riddled with bad 90s ideas of what WHO should be. Glad it was scrapped in the end. I love McGann, one of my fav Doctors, but if you read what they were going to do in just one season it was going to wreck so much it might have meant the end of everything. The only good content put out in the 90s for Doctor WHO was the Virgin books and the start of the Big Finish run.

@@tonytom5242 Oh agreed. I just listed today to The Paradox of the Daleks and it was AWESOME!! One of my favorite BF stories ever! He's a wonderful Doctor, but yeah, the stuff they were going to do to the show if it had been made, the 90s people did not have a good sense of where the show should go, would have been awful despite the best efforts of the lead actors, the writer's ideas I've seen for that series were just terrible.

I suspect this might involve RTD's take on fractured time, as with saw at the end of the River Song arc. With cars on balloons, Romans, and pterodactyls briefly on screen in the same collapsing time line. I still hold out hope for being surprised. That this 14th is the Valeyard, and so his decisions are darker than we'd expect even though we have a foe.

This is one of those concepts which has been discussed, dissected and analysed for a while. With videos made about it's conception to be made for it's 40th anniversary and it's troubled pre-production which led to it never being made and also if you look around YT a animated fan version has been produced an at least a couple of fan made audio plays produced based around the storyline. Ultimately to me having heard about it's troubled history, it seemed destined to never get made, with budget problems the rumours of the actors (former Doctors) involved not happy with Tom getting more screen time then they were etc etc. And in the end fell apart and instead we got Dimensions In Time. 90s were a real weird and depressing time if you a Doctor Who fan, with the many rumoured (true or false) stories of it's many attempts to revive the show. And no I don't think The Power Of The Doctor was in any way inspired by The Dark Dimension, and I doubt Chibnall had even heard of it to be honest

I am amazed that BF or a animated movie has not been produced based on this story. Maybe a multi media event ala Shadows of the Empire from the 1990s With regards to 60th, whilst I look forward to this enormously, it's the Ncuti Doctor that is most exciting thing for me at the moment. It's like being back in 2004.🎅

Back when Big Finnish were doing audios of abandoned stories (The Nightmare Fair featuring The Celestial Toymaker no less, Mission to magnus-Sil/Ice Warriors, The Ultimate Evil; all from the aborted season 23, which eventually gave way to the transmitted season 23, ie. The Trial of a Timelord; and other scripted but unmade tales), I asked Nick Briggs at a convention, if they would be doing The Dark Dimension (or "Lost in the Dark Dimension" as it was originally called), and he said that they wouldn't, because it was so Brigadier-centric and as Nick Courtney had recently passed, it wasn't considered viable. Maybe they could recast now a decent and respectable interval has passed. But there is a multi-part animated version on KZbin.

Ace did eventually lose her memory in the Prisoner's Dilemma (companion chronicle audio) and w/out it her entire time line is really hard to understand. With it you can separate the Novel continuity from the Big Finish stuff and easily make it all fit w/in the same timeline. Well... maybe not easily, but it makes it Possible! And isn't it great that sometimes it isn't the Doctor who loses their memory? I swear he has swiss cheese up there by now.

@@disneyboy3030 I own some of the comic trade paperbacks but I always found it hard to get into them cause they always went super outlandish with continuity. I have read 90% or so of the novels and have 99% of Big Finish and to me they put the work in to be consistent and believable so I always considered them cannon but I couldn't ever suspend my disbelief enough to buy into all of the comics. The quality is all over the place w/no restrictions or thought to fitting into the Whoniverse as a whole, it just seems they throw any old story together and we're supposed to lap it up, and I say NO. There are good ones I'm sure, but then there are some that just have to be chucked out or nothing makes any sense anymore.

I think the numbering thing doesn't matter anymore since Chibnall, plus it was already heavily implied in the Day of the Doctor that the Great Curator was in fact the Doctor, so it has already been established for a decade now that 'old faces' will return.

There was a lot of publicity back then about this celebration but the BBC pulled the plug around the time due somewhat to the internal problems at the top so that what is said? Times were changing for broadcasting and the BBC itself Sky TV and other political issues at the top? Doctor Who wasn't the only series to have the plug pulled some popular shows to time was turning and the BBC had to change out went classic comedy and in came big budget shows from over seas and some popular sports services remained for a while? Doctor Who had a very powerful friends the fans who had managed to keep it a float for a few more years but the power of fans wasn't enough well this isn't completely true it was American and other countries that saved Doctor Who through the winter grey time for English science fiction was this all that saved Doctor Who no it was actually Doctor Who marketing and the reruns and spin offs and possibly everyone who approached a great ride in time and space the series classics and the wobbly sets which still seem to give Doctor Who it's appeal the doctor and his great one liners and smile and talking us all on a seriously good adventure? Doctor Who Foreman Forever?
