I had the privilege of working on this project as a 3d animator. I'm amazed that you have as much footage as you do from it! We animated a good 25% or so of it before production stopped. It was the kind of film and story that could ONLY be told in animation. So happy to see that many people love the art and the concept! Matt Williames (Pronounced Will-ah-mees, btw) did such great work as did all of the animators on the show. Alessandro constructed such a heartfelt story that was intimate and fantastical. One thing to add to the history was the "failure" of Rise of the Guardians. That put a lot of pressure DreamWorks, who at the time didn't have the backing of a major company, to choose what they thought would make them money. DW's revenue was super dependent on B.O. revenue. New properties are a risky bet, especially since Shadows was going to cost DW a lot because of the new tech invented to get the look of the film.

Actually, Edgar Wright was brought on to tackle a different version of the film that was going to be made years after this film was cancelled. The writers of this were supposed to be Steve Bencich, Ron J. Friedman, Matt Ember and Tom Astle, whose track records I would say isn't the greatest.

I worked on this movie as an inbetweener on the rough 2D animation. I even animated some of the CG cat because I was trying to learn CG. I was extremely sad when we were let go because I enjoyed working on it so much and loved the crew.

It's really disappointing every time I hear of a project like a movie being cancelled because the studio was also producing another movie. Like, why did one have to die for the other to be made? Why were they even working on two films if they were going to scrap one of them, never to see the light of day? Why can they not finish one and go back to the other? "Hey guys! I spent a shitload of money of the Peabody and Sherman movie rights! Why? Because REMAKES! That's why. I think companies do this so they have options. If Dreamworks had put all their eggs into one basket, say, invested all their animation budget into Me and My Shadow, and something went wrong, or the movie didn't perform as well as they would like, or the market shifts in such a way so this project doesn't look too profitable anymore, they would be stuck. Remember, initially, Me and My Shadow was only pushed back, not canceled entirely. But when PB&S started having delays, Dreamworks went with the project they sunk the most time and money into at that point. Was choosing to make PB&S first the right choice? Perhaps not, but once they sunk more money into it they couldn't exactly scrap it completely and decide to start something over. Not without losing a shitton of money

They had one of the most insanely original concepts for a movie that is universally relatable to everyone's childhood (we all played with our shadows at one point) since Toy Story, and they canned it to produce... a Peabody and Sherman movie, two characters that no modern child even know exists and, even for adults, hasn't been watched as part of the mainstream since 1962... This made me think of "Shadow pupeteer", a videogame where the right part of the controller controls your character, and the left one controls your shadow. The gravity of the character is in 3d, but your shadow has lightsources as gravity points. You have to find and fight the shadow pupeteer, an evil guy who steals shadows and control them to attack you and your shadow. It's a simple and short, but really effective game.

One thing less talked about was how Adam Young was the composer for this entire movie. Love him or hate him, he is undoubtedly a very talented composer and has a lot of side projects outside Owl City with a variety of genres. Heck, he even composed the ringtones for the iPhones that are still being used today! Most of his projects that are found are probably only *the tip of the iceberg* (wink wink) as there are just so many of them. Though he has a lot of tricks up his short sleeve, can he manage to make an OST for a movie? Heck yeah he can. After leaving his label under Owl City, he created his own movie scores which has 106 tracks from 11 albums. I haven't listened to all of them just yet as there's so many of them, they fit so well for a movie and they're pretty catchy as well. Some of the tracks even come from old projects like Port Blue remastered to fit the atmosphere. Judging by the leaked footages from this movie I can tell he got a lot of Pixar inspiration mixed with a bit of his signature voice. @@volcanojumperxdcyberspace8415 a canned project often doesn't go on to see the light of day ever again. Its just the way it is. Even with most of the project finished, they'd have to restart it. After 2016, the 3D engine was improved that DreamWorks uses, meaning pre-2016 movies such as Megamind, Trolls, etc now have to be imported into the newer version and adjusted. Its not that easy of a task.

@@tamiwu0346 and the people with money and power think they know what they’re doing when they don’t. they chase trends that don’t last and interfere with artists all the time. they think they know better than a professional writer/director/artist because they want to be right and overthink what other people think when they don’t know what other people(the public) are thinking. artists do have tendencies to be more niche and value the message or beauty of a piece of work over whether most people will like or appreciate it. however, they think that excuses exerting control over a project when they don’t know squat about actually making movies. they just give money to people to make movies.

I love the concept! A shadow being animated, while the character is a 3D model just works so perfectly for both formats. It would be great if, when Stanley goes into the shadow realm, the realm is animated, while the "shadow's shadows" are CG. I can see why so many people are interested in this film, even if it never came out. Personally, I don't think it would be able to hold up for a full-length feature film, but I would love to see it as a 15-20 minute short. Mix it in with a few other unique and creative short stories, and release it as, "3 movies for the price of one!"

It's a shame that Dreamworks' scrapped animated films were never given the chance to be brought to life - their potential stories should be told as short stories instead. Me and My Shadow was a Dreamworks film that could have been a great blend of 3D and 2D animation. Unfortunately, it was scrapped and canceled. I was looking forward to this movie because it could have been a great example of combining different styles of animation. It's a shame that it was never released, as it could have been an interesting movie to see. Or at least it would have been. I don't why but I had to write this. It just felt right to me. @@tuopsy Sometimes they have no choice or say in the matter. Things can go wrong and all that. DreamWorks has a number of animation teams working for them to produce episodes for a dozen TV shows a year and 2-3 movies. Theres bound to be some ideas that just don't happen for one reason or another. Trolls was released in 2016, but originally it wasn't a Trolls film, it started out in the early 2000s as a The Nome Trilogy movie. Then when Trollz fell through in the mid-2006 they started to take interest before approaching Dam Things to get the licensing in 2006. by 2009 they had more solid talks and in 2010 they flat out bought the licensing. So now DreamWorks owns the "Trolls" brand in everywhere but its homeland where Dam Things still owns that right. It took until 2013 then to pick the direction for the film entirely. But its a pretty much example of how things go through, the Pop Eye thing can be anything from a last minute disagreement to a loss of the licensing, to the owners of said licensing not being happy with the direction, or even another project needed attention at the time and resources were redirected to that, etc. ITs not always the executives to blame as a dozen things can go wrong, especially for a project thats a licensing. For this film, the main thing I think was mostly behind it is that DreamWorks "Experimental" era ended.Right now, they have one "new" filma year, and this years film is "The Bad Guys". But the 2000s was when that era had occurred and a lot of what DreamWorks has learnt over time came out of that era. So DreamWorks isn't doing experiments anymore, their focused on things that earn them money, etc. Another propblem is they were bought by universal studios and from 2016 the company has a lot of rehashes, but Unviersal were also in talks long before that so... That could have been a problem for the company. Sure enough if you read the DWs wiki, in 2017 they said the project was in haitus due to management reshuffling that had occurred about then (and most likely IS related to Unversal taking over as thats when a lot of changes occurred in the company). There are dozens of projects either way in the drawers as things that DreamWorks never did, each animator has 3 or 4 projects they wanted to do but failed to do anything with because the climate was wrong in the industry or they had other things to do, etc.
